Everest Base Camp Trek Cost from Portugal: Prices in EUR, Flights, Visa and Insurance

From Lisbon the flight costs more than the Budget trek. The cheapest of 15 itineraries was EUR 1,713, against EUR 1,240 for the trek itself.

For a party of two to four, the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek costs each person about EUR 1,240 on Budget, EUR 2,470 on Standard and EUR 4,440 on Luxury (that is US$1,399, US$2,785 and US$4,999), and nothing changes in 2027. A solo Budget trekker pays US$2,275, about EUR 2,020. Taking the Lisbon flight, the visa, cover and tips into account, the bill for one person comes to roughly EUR 4,240 to EUR 4,990 on Budget, EUR 4,540 to EUR 5,190 on Standard alone and EUR 6,620 to EUR 7,320 on Luxury.

What Lisbon returned

The fares are for one adult in economy with a checked bag, out on 25 October 2026 (a Sunday), back on 11 November (a Wednesday), as one ticket, with no more than one stop in either direction.

Lisbon (LIS) returned 15 itineraries, from EUR 1,713 to EUR 2,131, every one with a change and every one on a Gulf airline. No Air Arabia, Turkish, Air India or Thai itinerary came up within one stop.

The lowest fare, EUR 1,713, is Etihad out and Qatar Airways home. Lisbon 08:15, Abu Dhabi 19:45, then the 03:10 flight lands in Kathmandu at 09:10 on 26 October, about 19 hours 10 minutes. The way back is the cost of that price: Kathmandu 11:05, Doha 13:20, and a Doha departure at 07:45 the next morning, landing in Lisbon at 12:45, about 31 hours 25 minutes. Emirates out through Dubai with the same Qatar return was EUR 1,793 (leaving Lisbon at 20:45 and arriving in Kathmandu at 18:40 the next day) or EUR 1,867 on the 13:35 departure that reaches Kathmandu at 08:20.

A faster return costs more. Etihad out and Emirates home, leaving Kathmandu at 09:20 and landing in Lisbon at 19:00 the same day (about 15 hours 25 minutes), was EUR 1,885. Emirates both ways, with that same return, was EUR 2,058. Qatar out with Emirates home started at EUR 1,960, but the outbound alone takes about 28 hours, with a night in Doha. Every result includes a cabin bag and a checked bag, though none lists a personal item. I priced Lisbon only; Porto and Faro travellers should run their own airport.

Putting the euros together

These figures are per traveller. Read the flight column as cheapest to dearest. The next column is the 30-day visa, insurance and tips, with meals on the trail added for Budget and pocket money for Standard and Luxury. No tier includes a Kathmandu hotel; the family homestay we run costs US$15 per person per night, around EUR 13.

Think of trail costs in two groups. Budget walkers pay for food at US$25 to US$40 a day (US$300 to US$480 over the trek). Standard and Luxury walkers do not, and carry 20,000 to 30,000 rupees (US$130 to US$195) for showers, charging and snacks instead. Either way, change money in Kathmandu. The expected tip is US$15 to US$20 per day for a guide and US$10 to US$15 per day for a porter.

The Nepali visa for a Portuguese passport

Portugal is not on the list of twelve nationalities that need a visa in advance, so you can buy it at Tribhuvan airport. Three durations are on offer: US$30 (15 days), US$50 (30 days, about EUR 45) and US$125 (90 days). Multiple entry in every case, payable in US dollars. The passport needs six months of validity. Health card and insurance

Segurança Social says the European Health Insurance Card (CESD) is valid only in EU member states, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the UK, and that it does not replace travel insurance. The Portuguese foreign ministry's Nepal page goes further and says the card is not valid in Nepal, and that Portuguese social security benefits do not apply abroad.

Three tests for any travel policy. One, does it cover trekking to 6,000 m? Kala Patthar is 5,545 m and many standard plans end far lower. Two, does it include helicopter evacuation, which costs US$3,000 to US$5,000 (about EUR 2,660 to EUR 4,440) if you pay? Three, does it cover illness such as altitude sickness, and not accidents only? Get the answers in writing and buy the policy in Portugal. Our helicopter cover to 6,000 m helps, and I will read the wording if you send it.

The foreign ministry and consular help

The ministry's Nepal advice (last updated 28 August 2026) says a visa is needed, with the passport valid for six months, and that border officers may ask for proof of insurance covering health costs and repatriation. It asks for insurance that covers the whole itinerary, including search and mountain evacuation, warns that some policies exclude altitude sickness, and says helicopters fly only if payment is guaranteed. It also notes that Lukla allows visual landings only, with suspensions lasting several days, and strongly encourages leaving as much time as possible between the end of a trek and the international flight. The voluntary Registo Viajante app is free.

Portugal has no embassy in Kathmandu. The ministry says the Consular Section of the Embassy in New Delhi covers Nepal ([email protected]), and its consular-network page lists an honorary consulate in Kathmandu.

The three tiers

What each tier means in practice. Budget: you carry your own bag, you share a room, you buy your own meals and you fly the fixed-wing plane to Lukla. Standard: meals are paid, you have a private room, and one porter serves two trekkers. Luxury: a dedicated porter, a deluxe ensuite room, fruit, nuts, unlimited soft drinks and a helicopter to Lukla and back. In every tier you also get a licensed guide, the three permits (NPR 3,000, 3,000 and 2,000), airport transfers, and a down jacket and minus 15 sleeping bag on loan. Travelling alone on Standard means the guide carries up to 10 kg because no porter is assigned. On Budget, a solo Everest Base Camp trekker pays US$2,275 instead of US$1,399. A Kathmandu hotel is not included.

Pico and Torre against Gorak Shep

Pico, on the Azores island of the same name, is the highest point in Portugal at 2,351 m, according to the Azores tourism board, and the mainland high point in the Serra da Estrela is about 1,993 m. Gorak Shep is at 5,164 m, and Kala Patthar at 5,545 m. Portuguese hillwalkers train on long climbs, but not on nights above 5,000 m, so the trek includes two acclimatisation days and a slow pace. Group prices in euros

Budget costs EUR 1,240 per person for two to four trekkers, EUR 1,150 for five to eight, EUR 1,060 for nine to twelve and EUR 890 for thirteen to twenty. Standard falls from EUR 2,470 to EUR 2,235, EUR 2,190 and EUR 2,175 across the same bands, and Luxury from EUR 4,440 to EUR 4,390, EUR 4,350 and EUR 4,300.

A private trek and a group trek cost the same per person. Only the number of trekkers changes the band.

Time off, public holidays and clocks

Article 238 of the Código do Trabalho sets a minimum of 22 working days of annual leave, counted Monday to Friday and excluding public holidays.

The only Portuguese public holiday near the autumn dates is 1 November 2026, a Sunday, so no weekday is gained. In spring 2027, Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Sunday 28 March, while 25 April falls on a Sunday and 1 May on a Saturday. In Portugal the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, which moves the gap with Nepal from 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 45 minutes. On Nepal's side, remember that permits take 48 hours of government working days, and that Dashain closed those offices from 17 to 23 October 2026, and Tihar closes them from 8 to 12 November. If the Lukla runway is busy, Budget and Standard flights go from Manthali, which means four to five hours by road and a pick-up anywhere between midnight and 2 am. Luxury uses a helicopter from Kathmandu.

Paying from Portugal

Payment has two steps. A 10 per cent deposit goes in when you book. The balance follows on arrival in Kathmandu, and only dollars or euros work for it, cash with no surcharge or card with 3.5 per cent on top; rupees are refused. Any date inside a year when you give 72 hours' notice, or seven days for Tibet, Kailash and restricted areas. The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel. Cancellation by us means a refund of your payments less taxes, bank and card fees and permit or flight money already gone.

Verify us

Before sending a deposit to anyone in Nepal, including us, look them up. Our registration in Kathmandu dates from 2016; TAAN lists us as member 1586; and the reviews run past 300 across TripAdvisor, Google and Trustpilot. The registrar, TAAN, the tourism licence and the forex certificate are open to checking. Even fully licensed companies have been involved in scams, so a licence is where checking starts, not where it ends. Part of what you pay helps the Nagarjun Learning Center.
