Upper Mustang is the one part of Nepal that still feels like the Tibetan plateau. This is the short way to see it: you fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, ride a private 4WD jeep up the Kali Gandaki gorge to Lo Manthang, spend three nights in the walled city with a day for the Chhoser caves, and ride back to Pokhara. There is no trekking, so it suits guests who have a week, who do not want to walk for several days at altitude, or who travel with someone who cannot.
We built it from our Upper Mustang trek and our fly-in trek, with the same guides, permits and rules. One honest point: Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow, so July and August are workable, but the Pokhara to Jomsom flight is often delayed in the monsoon, and the Beni to Jomsom road is under repair. We check the flight and the road 48 hours before departure. If we cannot go, we move your dates free of charge. You sleep as high as 3,840 m in Lo Manthang, so tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition.
The restricted-area permit is USD 50 per person per day, USD 250 for the 5 days you are inside, and we pay it. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Arrival: be in Pokhara the evening before the flight. The Jomsom flight leaves early and runs in the morning only. Pokhara hotel nights are not included, and we can book them.
Weather and a spare day: Jomsom flights are often delayed or cancelled in the monsoon and in strong wind. Keep one spare day before your international flight. If you lose a day on the way in, the Chhoser day is the first to give way.
Road: the Beni to Jomsom road is under repair. We check the road 48 hours before departure. If it is not open, we move your dates free.
Altitude: you sleep at 2,804 m, 3,520 m and 3,840 m. Your guide carries a pulse oximeter. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book.
Season: March to May and September to November are best. July and August are workable because Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow, but expect flight delays and possible landslides.
Permit: Upper Mustang needs a restricted-area permit, which we arrange through our company with a licensed guide. Solo guests are allowed (a licensed guide must go with you, and no more than 7 guests go with one guide). Permits need 48 hours, counted in government working days, so we ask for your passport details early. You never walk apart from your guide in a restricted area.
Luggage: a small daypack for the day, and the rest stays in the jeep. Domestic flights have luggage limits, and we confirm them at your briefing.
Food: tell us if you are vegetarian or eat no egg. We tell every lodge. Mobile data is not reliable north of Kagbeni.
Visa: USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, in cash on arrival, with a passport valid for at least six months.
Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover medical costs and helicopter rescue to 5,000 m. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
FAQs
Only short walks at Kagbeni, Lo Manthang and the Chhoser caves. The journey between villages is by private jeep. If you want to walk, our Upper Mustang treks cover the same route on foot.
The trek walks for days from Kagbeni and takes 10 to 15 days. This tour flies to Jomsom and rides a jeep to Lo Manthang, so it takes 8 days and needs no trekking fitness. The restricted-area permit is shorter too, 5 days instead of 9.
The permit is USD 50 per person per day, and this tour has 5 days inside the area, so USD 250 per person. We pay it. It is in the price, with the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and the TIMS card. Since 22 March 2026 a solo guest can be permitted, with a registered agency and a licensed guide.
We move you to the next available flight, or go by road if the road is open. We ask the airline to refund an unused ticket, but extra hotel nights and meals caused by a cancellation or a landslide are yours to pay. We check the flight and the road 48 hours before departure, and if we cannot go we move your dates free.
It is a rough mountain track and the Beni to Jomsom road is under repair. Our drivers know it, and your guide checks the road before each long drive. We do not drive when the road is not open.
Yes, with open eyes. Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow, so the trip stays fairly dry, but the Pokhara to Jomsom flight is often delayed, and the road can have landslides. Our best months are March to May and September to November.
You sleep at 2,804 m, 3,520 m and 3,840 m. Your guide checks your oxygen level. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book, and drink plenty of water.
No. The Pokhara nights before and after the tour are separate: we can book them (see the add-ons). Our Pokhara hotel prices are about USD 100 per room per night for a 3-star and USD 150 for a higher category.
The route, jeeps, guide and permit are the same on all three. Budget gives you shared rooms and no meals except the farewell dinner. Standard gives you a private twin room and all meals. Luxury gives you a private deluxe room, all meals with fruit, nuts and soft drinks, and a jeep with fewer guests, so there is more room.
Yes. Your guide and jeep are for your party only. We never add strangers to a private booking.
No. A child pays the same as an adult, because permits, flights, vehicles and taxes cost us the same for a child. Tell us the age of each child when you book.
A licensed guide leads the trip, and a climbing Sherpa climbs with you above base camp. We tell you their names once your booking is confirmed.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 7 days' notice.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers medical care, helicopter rescue to 5,000 m and the dates of your trip. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance before the trip. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge.
