Why I built it this way

Pisang Peak is the peak I give people who want a 6,000 m summit but do not want the Everest crowds. It is 6,091 m, it stands above the village of Upper Pisang, and you walk to it along the first half of the Annapurna Circuit, one of the great trails of Nepal. By the time you reach base camp you have slept at 3,300 m and 3,540 m, spent a rest day in Manang, and walked past the Annapurna range for five days.

It is a real climb. The summit pyramid is steep and the day is long, and you need to be very fit and to have trekked at altitude. You do not need to have climbed before, because your climbing Sherpa teaches you at base camp the afternoon before. Read Peak Climbing for Beginners in Nepal: Your First Mountain Above Six Thousand Metres and Easy Trekking Peaks in Nepal: Five Summits for Trekkers Who Want More Than a Trail, and tell me honestly what you have done.

I should be plain about one thing. The Besisahar to Chame road is under repair after the 27 September flood, so this is a trip for dates when the valley is open again. We check 48 hours before you leave, and if the road is not open we move your dates free.

The royalty, the permits, all the technical gear, the base camp food and the USD 500 garbage fee are in the price. Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Best time to go, month by month

These are 1991 to 2020 averages from the national weather stations at Manang (3,401 m) and Pokhara, as set out in our Annapurna Circuit month-by-month guide. They are not forecasts, and there is no station on the mountain itself.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
JanuaryColdest month. Manang averages 7 C by day and -9 C at night, with 6 mm of rain. Cold and wind high on Pisang Peak.Only with winter climbing experience
FebruaryManang 9 C by day, -7 C at night, 15.1 mm of rain. Still deep winter on the mountain.Only with winter climbing experience
MarchSpring starts. Manang 11 C by day, -3 C at night, 21.6 mm of rain. Rhododendrons on the lower trail, more cloud on the south side.Good, with a warm sleeping bag
AprilManang 14 C by day, -1 C at night, 38.5 mm of rain. Warmer, stable and busier. Pokhara gets 141.7 mm, so the south side is wetter.Best, with May
MayManang 16 C by day, 3 C at night, 40.4 mm. Warm, but the south side is much wetter (354.7 mm at Pokhara), so the lower days are more likely to be wet.Good, early May
JuneMonsoon. Manang gets 54.7 mm, but the lower trail is on the wet side and cloud hides the peaks. No
JulyMonsoon, the wettest month. Manang gets 85 mm, Pokhara 941 mm.No
AugustMonsoon. Manang gets 67 mm, Pokhara 839.4 mm.No
SeptemberThe monsoon is clearing. Manang gets 59.7 mm and Pokhara 635 mm. Landslides on the road are still likely.Late September only, with spare days
OctoberDry and clear. Manang gets 38.9 mm, days of 15 C and nights of about 1 C. The main autumn climbing season and the busiest.Best, with November
NovemberThe driest month: Manang gets 1.1 mm. Days of 12 C, nights of -4 C. Clear but cold.Best, with October
DecemberDry and cold. Manang gets 3.8 mm, with nights of -8 C. Few climbers, and snow can come at any time.Only with care

One price applies all year. The Nepal Mountaineering Association charges USD 350 in spring and USD 175 in autumn, winter and summer, and we cost the spring figure. The road, not the royalty, is what decides your month: see Is the Annapurna Circuit Open? Road Closures Versus Trail Closures.

Permits and costs

We apply for every permit and pay for all of them. You send us your passport details early, because climbing permits need 48 hours, counted in government working days. Pisang Peak is on the Nepal Mountaineering Association list of trekking peaks, so no restricted-area permit is needed.

Our family homestay in Kathmandu is USD 15 per person per night. You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card, and card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge.

Getting there and getting back

You start with a drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, about ten hours along the Prithvi Highway and up the Marsyangdi valley. You come back by jeep to Besisahar and then drive to Kathmandu, about six to seven hours. There are no flights on this trip. The Besisahar to Chame road is under repair after the 27 September flood (position as at 7 October), and Chame itself was hit. We check the road and the trail 48 hours before departure. If it is not open, we move your dates free of charge.

Read The Annapurna Circuit After the Roads: What Changed, What Remains, and Why It Still Matters and Besisahar: The Start of the Annapurna Circuit and the Way Out of Manaslu and Nar Phu for the road in detail. Visa on arrival is USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Safety and altitude

You climb from 1,300 m to 3,540 m in five days, with a rest day in Manang, then come back down to Upper Pisang before the mountain. Your guide checks your oxygen level and how you feel every day. If you are not acclimatising, we do not go higher. The Himalayan Rescue Association post at Manang gives a free talk on altitude sickness, and I suggest you go. Read Altitude Sickness on Nepal Treks: Complete Prevention and Safety Guide 2026/2027.

On the mountain your climbing Sherpa decides, and his word is final. We turn back for weather, snow conditions or how you feel. Emergency oxygen stays with the climbing team. If you need rescue, it is paid from your travel insurance, so buy a policy at home that covers climbing to 6,500 m and helicopter evacuation.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Experience: no climbing experience is needed, but you must have trekked at altitude before and be very fit. Tell us what you have done and we will say honestly whether this is the right peak.
  • The mountain: your climbing Sherpa decides whether you go on or turn back, and his decision is final. There is no refund for an unclimbed summit, because the permit, the staff and the vehicles are spent by then.
  • Permits: we apply for the climbing permit, so we need your passport details early. Permits need 48 hours, counted in government working days, so Nepali weekends and public holidays do not count.
  • Best months: April and May, and October and November. December to February is very cold. June to September is the monsoon, and the road is the problem as much as the weather.
  • Road: The Besisahar to Chame road is under repair after the 27 September flood (position as at 7 October), and Chame itself was hit. We check the road and the trail 48 hours before departure. If it is not open, we move your dates free of charge.
  • Group size: 1 to 20, all private. We never add strangers to a private booking.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover climbing to 6,500 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
  • Spare days: keep at least one spare day before your international flight, because road and weather delays happen on this side of Nepal.
  • Never alone: you climb only with your guide team, and you never walk or climb apart from them.
  • Money: there is an ATM in Besisahar and sometimes in Jomsom, but do not rely on them. Draw cash in Kathmandu.
  • Hotels: hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included. We can book them for you, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.

FAQs

It is a hard climb. The trail is five days of 5 to 7 hours at altitude, and summit day is long, on a steep summit pyramid. You need excellent fitness and a good record of trekking at altitude. Climbing experience helps but is not essential, because your Sherpa teaches you at base camp.
For a couple, the price per person is USD 3,740 Budget, USD 4,345 Standard and USD 5,900 Luxury. A solo climber pays USD 5,135, USD 5,680 and USD 8,820. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 2,825, USD 3,500 and USD 5,285 for 13 to 20 guests. The royalty, permits, gear and USD 500 garbage fee are inside the price.
No. Your climbing Sherpa runs a skills session at base camp before the climb: fixed-rope ascent with a jumar, descent with a figure-of-eight, crampon technique and ice axe arrest. What you do need is fitness and experience of trekking at altitude. If you have done a glacier course, tell us.
Pisang Peak is 6,091 m, according to the Nepal Mountaineering Association list. You start the trek at 1,300 m at Jagat and sleep as high as Manang at 3,540 m before the mountain camps.
Yes, and both are included. A licensed guide leads the trek and goes to base camp, and a climbing Sherpa climbs with you from base camp to the summit, one for each climber. Nepal's rules need a guide on most trekking routes, and nobody climbs alone.
The Besisahar to Chame road is under repair after the 27 September flood, and Chame itself was hit. We check the road and trail 48 hours before departure. If it is not open, we move your dates free of charge. Our road-versus-trail page explains the difference.
It is safe when it is run slowly, and this route is. Your guide checks your oxygen level every day, and we do not go higher if you are not acclimatising. Climbing always carries some risk: the Sherpa turns us back for weather, snow or how you feel. You need insurance that covers climbing to 6,500 m and helicopter evacuation.
April and May, and October and November. November is the driest month at Manang (1.1 mm) and cold at night (-4 C). December to February is very cold and June to September is the monsoon. See the month-by-month table on this page.
Yes. The Nepal Mountaineering Association charges USD 350 for Pisang Peak in spring and USD 175 in autumn, winter and summer. We cost the spring figure, so you pay one price all year and the royalty is inside it.
Then we come down. The Sherpa's decision is final, whatever the reason. There is no refund for an unclimbed summit, because the permit, staff, vehicles and lodges are spent by then. The reserve day at base camp gives you a second attempt if weather stopped the first.
Nothing technical. We provide double mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, jumar, descender, ice axe and helmet, and we can lend a sleeping bag and down jacket. Bring your own base layers, insulation, gloves, hat, sunglasses and well broken-in trekking boots.
Yes. Solo climbers are welcome, with a guide and a Sherpa. A solo climber pays USD 5,135 on Budget, USD 5,680 on Standard and USD 8,820 on Luxury, because the guide, Sherpa and camp cost the same for one person. We never add strangers to a private booking.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu before the trip. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash in Kathmandu carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 7 days' notice.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers climbing to 6,500 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
