Why I built it this way

If you have one free day in Kathmandu and your legs want something harder than a temple, this is the walk I give people. It starts about 45 minutes from Thamel. You pass through dense forest to Nagi Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery, and go on to the summit, with views over the valley and, on a clear day, the Langtang range.

It is not the same as our Sundarijal day hike. That walk comes down the eastern side to Sundarijal. This one goes to the top of Shivapuri and back the way you came, so it is the better choice if you want the summit and a fitness check before a trek.

The park rule is that foreign visitors walk with a guide, so a guide is part of the price at every level. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum. Read Shivapuri National Park Day Hike: Kathmandu's Backyard Wilderness for the full guide to the mountain and Sundarijal: The Gateway to Shivapuri, Chisapani and the End of the Helambu Trail.

Best time to go, month by month

These notes come from our guides on the Shivapuri trail. They are not forecasts.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
JanuaryCold mornings, 0 to 5 C, often clear views.Good, pack warm layers
FebruaryDry and clear, cold at the start of the day.Good
MarchWarmer, rhododendrons starting, haze by midday.Good, start early
AprilRhododendrons in bloom, hazy afternoons.Good, start early
MayHot lower down, pre-monsoon storms and cloud by mid-morning.Early starts only
JuneMonsoon: cloud, mud and leeches.No

AugustMonsoon.No
SeptemberThe rains ease late in the month.Late September only
OctoberClean air after the rains and the clearest views.Best
NovemberDry, clear and cool.Best

October to early December is the sweet spot. Start early in every season, because cloud usually builds by noon and the views are best in the morning.

Permits and costs

Shivapuri is a national park, so a park permit and a TIMS card are needed. We arrange both.

TIMS cardNPR 2,000 (NPR 1,000 SAARC)Included, we issue it through our agency

The price per person falls as the group grows, and a child pays the same as an adult. Private or group, the price per person is the same. Here is the full table. These prices hold for 2027.

13 to 20 guestsUSD 60USD 85USD 105

Not included: international flights, your Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, paid in cash on arrival), Kathmandu hotel nights, travel insurance, tips, personal spending and any extra porter (USD 25 per day plus 13% VAT and the 3.5% bank charge). You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card, and card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.

Getting there and getting back

We collect you from your Kathmandu hotel early and drive to the Budhanilkantha gate, about 45 minutes from Thamel. The vehicle waits for you at the gate and takes you back to your hotel in the afternoon. We check road conditions 48 hours before departure. If a road is not open, we move your dates free of charge.

Visa on arrival is USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Safety and altitude

The highest point is 2,732 m, so altitude is not the worry. The effort is the climb itself, over 1,100 m, and the descent is harder on the knees than the ascent is on the lungs. Your guide sets the pace, carries a first aid kit with a pulse oximeter and turns round with you if the weather changes.

There are no shops above Nagi Gompa, so carry your water. In the monsoon the trail is muddy and there are leeches. Buy travel insurance at home that covers day hikes.

What to pack

  • Trail shoes or light hiking boots with good grip
  • 1.5 to 2 litres of water and a packed lunch if you are on Budget

  • Trekking poles, which help on the way down
  • Binoculars if you enjoy birds

Fixed departures are dates we have already committed to run. Your party still treks as its own private group with its own guide; we never merge bookings or add strangers, and solo trekkers are welcome on any date. Private departures on any other date you choose are also available. On both, the per-person price is set by the size of your own party.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Fitness: you climb over 1,100 m and walk for six to seven hours. If you can walk uphill for three hours without stopping, you will be fine.
  • Start: we leave early, because afternoon cloud often hides the view.
  • Permits: the park fee and TIMS card are included. Bring your passport.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover day hikes.
  • Hotels: your Kathmandu hotel is not included. We can book it, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.

FAQs

For a couple, the price per person is USD 130 Budget, USD 155 Standard and USD 175 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 185, USD 215 and USD 270. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 60, USD 85 and USD 105 for 13 to 20 guests. These prices hold for 2027.
It is graded Moderate to challenging. You climb over 1,100 m from the Budhanilkantha gate to the summit and walk for six to seven hours in all. No technical skill is needed, but you should be able to walk uphill for three hours without stopping.
Yes. Shivapuri is a national park, so you need the park entry (NPR 1,000, NPR 600 for SAARC nationals) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Both are included and we arrange them. Bring your passport. The park rules ask foreign visitors to walk with a guide, and ours is included.
October to early December gives the clearest air. March and April bring rhododendrons, with haze by afternoon. June to September is monsoon: muddy trail, leeches and cloud.
Yes, with your own guide. A solo traveller has the guide and the vehicle to themselves, which is why the solo price is higher.
Fit older children who can climb for three hours and walk six to seven hours in the day can do it. A child pays the same as an adult. Tell us everyone's age and fitness when you book, and I will say honestly if the route suits them.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel. Check that it covers day hikes to 3,000 m (the summit is 2,732 m, rounded up to the next 500 m). We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance when you meet us in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
The summit is at 2,732 m (8,963 ft). Nagi Gompa, the nunnery on the way, is at about 2,100 m.
About six to seven hours on the trail, plus about 45 minutes each way by road from Kathmandu. Plan a full day.
A Tibetan Buddhist nunnery in the forest on the way up, about 90 minutes from the gate. The nuns sometimes offer tea to walkers. Please dress and behave as you would at any monastery.
Sundarijal is a one-way walk that comes down the eastern side of the park. This hike goes to the summit and returns the way you came. If you want the summit, book this one.
Most walkers see langur monkeys and several bird species. Leopards and bears live in the park, but sightings are rare and I do not promise them.
