Overview

From US$1,520Updated Oct 18, 2026

Janakpur, Pashupatinath and Muktinath Pilgrimage is a 9-day trip for Indian pilgrims and families who want three of the best-known Hindu places in Nepal in one journey. You visit the Janaki temple in Janakpur, fly to Kathmandu for Pashupatinath, drive to Pokhara past the Manakamana cable car, then go up the Kali Gandaki valley by 4WD to Muktinath at about 3,800 m. It is graded Easy to Moderate. It costs from USD 1,520 per person (Budget, couple). The price per person is the same for a private trip and a group of the same size, and it falls as the group grows. Indian guests pay in US dollars or euros, like everyone else.

Why I built it this way

Many Indian families ask for these three places together: Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita; Pashupatinath, on the Bagmati in Kathmandu; and Muktinath, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. I built this as one journey in the order that makes sense on the map and for the body: the low, warm plains first, the Kathmandu temples next, and the high temple last, after two days of climbing gently by road.

The Muktinath part is our Muktinath Jeep Pilgrimage, 6 Days, with the Manakamana cable car on the way to Pokhara and a night at Tatopani for the hot springs. We go to Jomsom by 4WD, not by flight, so that you gain height gently, about 1,900 m in two days. We sleep at Jomsom, lower than the temple, and visit Muktinath in the morning. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum.

Scheduled Pokhara–Jomsom flights stopped on 19–21 October 2026 for about five months (charter flights still run), so for now we go by road. The Beni–Jomsom road is open again after the September floods but slow in places (checked 26 October 2026).

Pashupatinath is a temple only Hindus may enter, and our guide will show you what everyone can see, including the evening aarti by the river. See Pashupatinath Temple Guide: Evening Aarti, Etiquette and What Non-Hindus Can See. Prices are in US dollars. Indian guests pay in US dollars or euros, like everyone else, and we cannot take Nepali rupees.

Best time to go, month by month

October and November give the clearest views, and they are also festival season with crowded temples. Ask me about the road before you book any month.

Starting dates for 2027

You choose your dates, starting any day in Janakpur. These are the windows I would pick for 2027. Festival dates are the expected ones and are confirmed each year. Temples are very crowded on festival days.

Not included: international flights, your journey to Janakpur, your Nepal visa if you need one (Indian citizens do not need a Nepal visa; other passports pay USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days on arrival), travel insurance, tips, personal spending, puja offerings and any extra porter. You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge, and cash has no fee. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.

Getting there and getting back

Day 1 starts in Janakpur. Most Indian guests reach Janakpur by road or by air, and we meet you there. On day 2 you fly Janakpur to Kathmandu. From Kathmandu we drive to Pokhara on day 4 and take a jeep up the Kali Gandaki valley on days 5 and 6 (shared on Budget and Standard, private on Luxury). We return the same way on day 8 and drive Pokhara to Kathmandu on day 9.

Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal, and we will tell you which ID to carry when you book. Other nationalities pay USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and the passport must be valid for six months.

Safety and altitude

Muktinath is about 3,800 m, and the air is thin. We sleep at Jomsom, 2,720 m, lower than the temple, and go up in the morning. Walk slowly and drink water. Older pilgrims should tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before they book. We carry a first aid kit with a pulse oximeter and we go down if anyone is unwell.

The road beyond Beni is rough and unsealed, and the Kali Gandaki valley has landslides in the monsoon. We check the road 48 hours before departure. Buy travel insurance that covers travel to 4,000 m.

What to pack

  • Warm layers: Muktinath and Jomsom are cold even in spring
  • A windproof jacket for Jomsom afternoons
  • Comfortable shoes that are easy to remove at temples
  • Modest clothes for temples, covering shoulders and knees
  • A hat, sun cream and sunglasses
  • Personal medicines, including anything for altitude your doctor advises

Questions people ask

How do I pay?
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu or online. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge, and cash has no fee. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
What happens if I need to cancel, or you cannot run the trip?
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
Is this trip made for Indian pilgrims?
Yes. It starts in Janakpur and follows the order Indian families usually ask for. It is open to guests of any nationality. We take payment in US dollars or euros, like every trip we run.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Nepal?
No. Indian citizens can enter Nepal without a visa. Tell us when you book and we will tell you which ID to carry.
Can I visit Pashupatinath if I am not Hindu?
You can see the riverside, the aarti and the outer areas. Only Hindus may enter the main temple. Our guide will show you what everyone can see.
Why 4WD and not a flight to Jomsom?
A road climb of about 1,900 m in two days is gentler on the body, and it lets you see Beni, Tatopani and Marpha. Flights to Jomsom can also be cancelled by wind.
Is the food vegetarian?
We can arrange vegetarian meals on every day. Tell us when you book and about any other dietary needs.
How much does the Nepal pilgrimage cost?
For a couple, the price per person is USD 1,520 Budget, USD 2,305 Standard and USD 3,330 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 2,685, USD 3,720 and USD 5,445. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 870, USD 1,600 and USD 2,455 for 13 to 20 guests. These are our 2027 prices. If we have already quoted you a price in writing, we hold it.
How hard is the Nepal pilgrimage?
It is easy to moderate. Most of the trip is by road and at temples. The effort is the length of the road days and the thin air at Muktinath, about 3,800 m. We sleep at Jomsom, 2,720 m, lower than the temple, and visit it in the morning.
Do I need a permit?
Yes for the Mustang part. You need the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and a TIMS card, both included, and the Muktinath temple entry is included. Bring your passport, and tell us your nationality when you book so we can tell you which ID to carry.
When is the best time to go in 2027?
October and November give the clearest air but crowded temples. March to May is a good second window. June to September is monsoon and landslides can close the Kali Gandaki road. December to February is very cold at Muktinath.
Can I do it alone?
Yes, with your own guide. A solo traveller has the guide to themselves, and on Luxury the vehicle too, which is why the solo price is higher.
Can children or older people do it?
Children and older pilgrims can go if they are healthy and comfortable at altitude. Muktinath is thin air and the lanes are steep. Tell us everyone's age and health when you book and I will say honestly if it suits. A child pays the same as an adult.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel. Muktinath is about 3,800 m, rounded up to the next 500 m is 4,000 m. Ask your insurer for cover to 4,000 m. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
