Why I built this tour the way I did

Many Muktinath trips are rushed. You leave Pokhara before dawn, reach the temple, and are back in the car the next morning. I wanted a trip where you actually see the valley. There are no flights in this one, because the scheduled Pokhara to Jomsom flights are paused at the moment, and also because the road is where the villages are. You see the hills turn dry, the apple orchards at Marpha, and the old walled streets of Kagbeni.

I will be honest about the road. The Beni to Jomsom road is open again after the September 2026 floods, but it is slow in places, with one-lane stretches and a temporary crossing, and I cannot promise it is fully repaired (checked 26 October 2026). The stretch in the Myagdi district that used to take about an hour now takes 3 to 4. So I do not try to reach Jomsom on the first day. We sleep at Tatopani, which also gives you the hot springs. Day 2 is the long one, and it is the price of seeing Muktinath without a flight. If you want a pilgrimage with Kathmandu included, see our Muktinath Jeep Pilgrimage, 6 Days. If you want to walk the valley, see the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Muktinath is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. Marpha is a Thakali village known for its apple orchards. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum.

Best time to go, month by month

These notes are general and they are not forecasts. Landslides and road works can close the road for hours or days in any month.

What a day looks like

We start early, usually at about 6 or 7 am, because the road is long and the wind in the valley rises later in the day. We stop for tea, for lunch, and whenever the view is worth it. Your guide tells you each morning how long the drive is, because it depends on the road. At Muktinath and Kagbeni you walk, slowly, because the air is thin. Tell the guide if you have a headache or feel dizzy.

Prices for 2027

These are per person, in US dollars. Solo travellers pay the real cost of a guide, a vehicle and a room, which is why the solo price is higher. The price falls as the group grows.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • The road: road open again after the September floods but slow in places (checked 26 October 2026). Expect one-lane stretches and a temporary crossing, and slower driving in the Myagdi district. Full two-way traffic is not confirmed. Landslides can close the road for hours, and in the monsoon for longer. Tell us if your flight home is tight, and plan a spare day at the end.
  • The river: in some seasons the last stretch to Kagbeni crosses the dry river bed. If the water is too high, your guide walks you in or we change the day.
  • Altitude: Muktinath is about 3,800 m. You sleep at about 2,700 m the night before. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book.
  • Wind: the valley wind is strong in the afternoon. Bring a windproof layer, sunglasses and a scarf or buff.
  • Hot springs: Tatopani entry is paid by you on the day, a small fee.
  • Insurance: buy it at home, covering travel to 4,000 m and emergency evacuation.
  • Hotels: Pokhara nights before and after the tour are not included. We can book them for you.

FAQs

For a couple, the price per person is USD 500 Budget, USD 795 Standard and USD 1,365 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 800, USD 1,185 and USD 2,450. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 305, USD 575 and USD 855 for 13 to 20 guests. These prices hold for 2027.
Pokhara to Beni is about 3 hours. Operators quote 8 to 9 hours for Pokhara to Jomsom in normal times. Right now the Myagdi stretch after Beni is slow, so I count on 6 to 8 hours to Tatopani, and I do not try to reach Jomsom on day 1. Tatopani to Muktinath is about 7 hours in normal conditions.
Yes, it has reopened after the September 2026 floods, but it is slow in places, with one-lane stretches and a temporary crossing, and I cannot say it is fully repaired (checked 26 October 2026). We check with drivers before each departure and tell you what we hear.
It is a mountain road, with narrow stretches and drops, and our drivers know it well. Since the September 2026 floods there are one-lane stretches and a temporary crossing. We do not push on if the road is not safe: we wait or change the plan. Tell me before you book if you get car sick, and I will advise on seats and medicine.
The pilgrimage starts and ends in Kathmandu, includes Kathmandu to Pokhara and is built around the temple. This tour starts and ends in Pokhara, has no flights, and spends more time in the villages: Kagbeni, Jharkot, Marpha, Tukuche and Tatopani.
Yes. You need the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and Muktinath temple entry. Both are included and we arrange them. There is no restricted-area permit on this route, because we stop at Kagbeni. Bring your passport.
No. You walk in the villages and at the temple, about an hour or two at a time. The temple has steps, and the air is thin at about 3,800 m, so go slowly. The grade is Easy.
October and November give the clearest air. March to May is also good. Winter is cold at Muktinath. In the monsoon (June to August) landslides are more likely on the road, so I do not suggest it for a first visit.
Yes, with your own guide and vehicle. A solo traveller has the guide and the vehicle to themselves, which is why the solo price is higher.
Yes, if they are fine with long days in a vehicle and a little height. Muktinath is about 3,800 m. Tell us everyone's age and I will say honestly if it suits. A child pays the same as an adult.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel. Muktinath is about 3,800 m, rounded up to the next 500 m is 4,000 m. Ask your insurer for cover to 4,000 m and emergency evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu or online. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments for the balance carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
If we cannot run your tour, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
It happens, more often in the monsoon and after heavy rain. We wait for the road to open, or reroute where there is a way, and your guide tells you what is possible. Extra nights on the road are paid by you, at the lodge price. If we cannot reach Muktinath, I will tell you before we go on, and we agree the next step together. Plan a spare day at the end if your flight home is tight.
Yes. Pokhara nights and the way to and from Kathmandu are not in the price, and I can quote them separately. Tell me your dates on WhatsApp and I will say what fits.
