What luxury means on an Everest trek

Nobody can make Everest soft. At Gorak Shep every lodge is simple, the toilets are cold and the nights are freezing. What Luxury does is remove the parts that wear people down. You fly to Lukla by helicopter instead of queueing for the small planes. You have your own porter, so you walk with a day pack. You sleep in the best lodge in each village, with a private room and an attached bathroom where one exists. At Lobuche and Gorak Shep there is no luxury lodge, so you sleep in the best teahouse room available and the toilets are shared. You eat three meals a day and you never go short of hot water, and your porter carries tea, coffee, juice, soft drinks, fruit and nuts for you.

I would rather tell you what it is not. It is not a five-star hotel on a mountain. The altitude is the same as for every other guest, and the weather can still delay a helicopter. If you want the same route at a lower price, take our Everest Base Camp Trek, 12 Days, which has Budget, Standard and Luxury on one page. For a longer plan with spare days, see our 15-day trek.

Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum.

Best time to go, month by month

October and November give the clearest views, with the first half of November the pick if you can choose. March and April are the second window, warmer by day but with more afternoon cloud. Light is best in the morning, so we plan early starts.

Safety and altitude

You sleep as high as Gorak Shep, 5,164 m, and climb to 5,545 m. Altitude can affect anyone, whatever their fitness. The rest days at Namche and Dingboche are the heart of the plan, and on this 15-day version the two flexible days give you more room again. Your guide checks everyone's oxygen level every day with a pulse oximeter. If a reading is low or symptoms appear, we do not go higher, and if they worsen we go down. Read Acclimatisation on Nepal Treks: Why Your Body Needs Time and What Happens When You Rush.

Drink three to four litres of water a day. Buy travel insurance at home that covers trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation (the highest point is 5,545 m, rounded up to the next 500 m).

Questions people ask

How much does the luxury Everest Base Camp trek cost?
For a couple, this trek is USD 9,915 per person. A solo traveller pays USD 15,565, because the private helicopter is paid for by one guest. For groups the price per person falls to USD 8,975 (3 to 8), USD 8,185 (9 to 12) and USD 7,880 (13 to 20). It covers the private helicopter both ways, your porter, upgraded lodges, meals and permits. Kathmandu hotels and travel insurance are extra. Prices are all-in, with VAT and service charge included.
What is included in the luxury Everest Base Camp trek?
A private helicopter charter from Kathmandu to Lukla and back, a licensed guide for every two trekkers, one dedicated porter for each trekker, private rooms in the best lodge in each village, three meals a day, hot water, tea, coffee, juice, fruit and nuts carried by your porter, and the Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu municipality and TIMS permits. Airport transfers by private car are included. Kathmandu hotels, insurance and alcohol are not.
Is there a real luxury lodge trek in the Everest region?
There are comfortable lodges up to Namche and Tengboche, and a few with better rooms and attached bathrooms. Above Dingboche every lodge is simple, because the materials have to be carried up by porters. I would not promise a five-star room at Gorak Shep, and nobody honest will.
Why choose the helicopter instead of the Lukla flight?
The charter leaves when you are ready, with no shared seat to wait for, and it carries only your party (up to four guests). It avoids the early start from Manthali in the busy weeks. A helicopter can still be delayed by weather, and we tell you the plan for that before you book.
How is this different from your 12-day Everest Base Camp trek?
The route and the days are the same. This page is the premium version: a private helicopter instead of a shared seat, and the best lodges at Phakding, Namche, Tengboche and Lukla. If you want the same route for less, our 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek page has Budget, Standard and Luxury, and its Luxury tier uses a shared helicopter seat.
How hard is the trek?
Strenuous. You walk four to seven hours a day, sleep as high as 5,164 m and climb to 5,545 m. Luxury makes the logistics easier, but not the altitude. Train for several weeks before you come.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. Sagarmatha National Park (NPR 3,000), the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee (NPR 3,000) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). All three are included.
When is the best time to go in 2027?
Mid October to mid November gives the clearest skies and the busiest trail, with April next. December to February is very cold. June to mid September is monsoon.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Buy it at home. The highest point is 5,545 m, rounded up to the next 500 m is 6,000 m. Ask your insurer for cover to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
Who carries my bag?
Your own porter, with a bag of up to 20 kg. The government limit is 20 kg per porter and we keep to it. You carry a day pack with water, a camera and a warm layer.
Can I do it alone?
Yes, with your own guide and your own porter. The solo price is much higher because one guest pays for the whole private helicopter, both ways.
How do I pay?
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance when you meet us in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments of the balance carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
What happens if I need to change my dates, or you cannot run the trip?
Free rescheduling: tell us at least 72 hours before departure (7 days for restricted areas) and we move you to any date within one year. The 10% deposit is not refunded if you cancel. If we cannot run the trip, we refund what you paid less taxes, bank charges and any money already spent on permits and flights.
What group sizes do you take?
From one person to 20. Every booking is private and we never add strangers. If you want company, ask about our fixed departures. The price per person is the same for a private trip and a group of the same size, and it falls as the group grows.
