Lobuche East is a 6,119 m peak above the village of Lobuche, on the Everest trail. It is the next step up from Island Peak: our research suggests a steeper, more sustained climb on snow and ice, and it rewards climbers who already have a 6,000 m peak or a good deal of cold-weather experience. We built this route from our Island Peak and Mera Peak climbs, with the same gear, the same private groups and the same rule on the mountain: the climbing Sherpa decides, and his word is final.

You walk the classic Everest trail for seven days, with acclimatisation days in Namche and Dingboche, and sleep at Lobuche at 4,940 m before you go up. Then comes a skills day at base camp, a night at high camp, and the summit. A reserve day is built in for a second attempt, and a spare day at Lukla covers the flight. Because the royalty, the permits and the USD 500 garbage fee are inside the price, there is nothing to pay on top for the mountain. Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included, so you choose your own. The Nepal Mountaineering Association sets the Lobuche East royalty by season: USD 350 per person in spring (March to May) and USD 175 per person in autumn, winter and summer. Our price is the same all year and already includes it.

Every booking supports the Nagarjun Learning Center, our school in Saldum. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Fixed departures are dates we have already committed to run. Your party still treks as its own private group with its own guide; we never merge bookings or add strangers, and solo trekkers are welcome on any date. Private departures on any other date you choose are also available. On both, the per-person price is set by the size of your own party.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Experience: this is harder than Island Peak. A previous 6,000 m peak, or good experience of snow, ice and cold, is strongly advised. Tell us what you have done and we will say honestly whether Lobuche East or Island Peak is the better first peak.
  • Fitness: you need excellent cardiovascular fitness. The trail days are 5 to 7 hours, and summit day is much longer.
  • Altitude: you sleep as high as Lobuche at 4,940 m before the mountain camps. Your guide checks your oxygen level and how you feel every day. If you are not acclimatising, we do not go higher.
  • The mountain: your climbing Sherpa decides whether you go on or turn back, and his decision is final. There is no refund for an unclimbed summit, because the permit, the staff and the flights are spent by then.
  • Best months: April and May, and October and November. December to February is very cold, and June to mid-September has snow, cloud and avalanche risk.
  • Permits: we apply for the climbing permit, so we need your passport details early. Permits need 48 hours, counted in government working days, so Nepali weekends and public holidays do not count. We ask for your details well before you fly.
  • Group size and ratios: 1 to 20, all private. We never add strangers to a private booking.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover climbing to 6,200 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
  • Spare days: keep at least one spare day before your international flight, because the Lukla flight depends on the weather.
  • Never alone: you climb only with your guide team, and you never walk or climb apart from them.
  • Hotels: hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included. We can book them for you, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.

FAQs

Lobuche East is 6,119 m high. You climb with a Sherpa on your rope, from a base camp and a high camp, in the dark on summit day. It is a harder climb than Island Peak. Your Sherpa runs a skills session in daylight at base camp before you go up.
It sits on the Everest trail at Lobuche, so you take the same route as Everest Base Camp trekkers as far as Dingboche, then head to Lobuche. Our research suggests the climb is steeper and more sustained than Island Peak, and we ask for more experience. The price per person per day is the same as our Island Peak climb or higher, depending on the tier.
A previous 6,000 m peak, or experience of snow, ice and cold, is strongly advised. Tell us what you have done and we will say honestly whether this peak or Island Peak is the better start.
Everything for the mountain: the Nepal Mountaineering Association climbing royalty, the park and municipality permits, the USD 500 garbage fee, all the technical gear, a climbing Sherpa for each climber, camp crew and food at base camp and above. Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included.
Yes. The Nepal Mountaineering Association charges USD 350 in spring and USD 175 in autumn, winter and summer. You pay one price all year, and the royalty is in it.
Then we come down. The Sherpa's decision is final, whether the reason is weather, snow or how you feel. There is no refund for an unclimbed summit, because the permit, staff, flights and lodges are spent by then. A reserve day is built into the itinerary so one bad day does not end the attempt.
The climbing permit comes with a USD 500 garbage fee, and it is our responsibility, not yours. It is in the price. Your part is to carry down everything you carry up.
All technical equipment is provided: double boots, crampons, harness, jumar, descender, ice axe and helmet. Bring your own base layers, insulation, gloves, hat and sunglasses. We send a packing list when you book, and we can lend a sleeping bag and down jacket.
Not as standard. If you want Kala Patthar or Everest Base Camp as well, tell us when you book and we will plan and price the extra days.
The mountain, the Sherpa and the gear are the same on all three. Budget gives you shared teahouse rooms, no porter, no trail meals and a flight to Lukla. Standard gives you a private room, all meals and one porter for every two trekkers. Luxury gives you a private deluxe room, all meals with fruit, nuts and soft drinks, a dedicated porter and a helicopter to and from Lukla. The helicopter is a shared seat. If no shared seat is free on your dates, we can arrange a private charter at an extra cost and will tell you the price before you book.
Yes. Your guide, Sherpa and team are for your party only. We never add strangers to a private booking.
No. A child pays the same as an adult, because permits, flights, vehicles and taxes cost us the same for a child. Tell us the age of each child when you book.
A licensed guide leads the trip, and a climbing Sherpa climbs with you above base camp. We tell you their names once your booking is confirmed.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 7 days' notice.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers climbing to 6,200 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance before the trip. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge.
