Why I built it this way

Annapurna Base Camp is the trek most of my guests ask about, and many of them also want to see a rhino. This trip puts both in one booking. You start with two nights beside Chitwan National Park, where you look for rhinos, birds and crocodiles from a jeep and a dugout canoe, then drive to Pokhara and walk the seven-day Annapurna Base Camp trek, and fly back to Kathmandu.

I put the jungle first on purpose. It is flat and warm, and it gives your legs two easy days before the steps of Ghandruk and the Chomrong staircase. It also means you finish the trip with a hot shower in Pokhara and a short flight, not a long drive. The trek is the same as our Annapurna Base Camp trek of 7 days from Pokhara. It is not an easy walk: you sleep at 4,130 m, and there is no acclimatisation night between Chomrong and base camp. Read How Difficult Is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek? Honest Rating for 2026/2027 and Chitwan Jungle Safari: Tigers, Rhinos, and What to Actually Expect before you choose.

We do not sell animal rides. Our Chitwan days are a jeep, a dugout canoe, a walk with a naturalist, Tharu culture and birds. Customers find us because of that. If you want more time in Chitwan or on the mountain, ask me and I will price an extra night.

Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included, so you choose your own (our family homestay is USD 15 per person per night). Two Chitwan nights and two Pokhara nights are included, and so are all the road transfers and the flight back. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Best time to go, month by month

Rain and temperature in Pokhara are 1991 to 2020 averages, and the base camp nights come from our Annapurna Base Camp month-by-month guide. The Chitwan notes come from our Chitwan seasonal guide. Neither is a forecast.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
JanuaryCold and clear, with snow on the upper trail. Pokhara 19.9 C by day and 7.1 C at night, 21.6 mm of rain. Deurali nights near minus 7 C and base camp near minus 14 C. Chitwan has cool, foggy mornings.Hard, not for a first winter trek
FebruaryCold, snow can sit above 3,000 m. Pokhara 22.7 / 9.7 C, 35.1 mm. Base camp nights near minus 12 C. Chitwan is cool, with thin cover.Hard
MarchSpring begins. Rhododendron starts low down, mornings are clear. Pokhara 27.1 / 13.1 C, 63.7 mm. Base camp nights near minus 9 C. Chitwan is getting hot.Good
AprilWarm, flowers on the ridges, more afternoon cloud, busier. Pokhara 30.0 / 16.1 C, 141.7 mm. Chitwan can reach 35 to 40 C.Good
MayHot low down, cloud and storms build. Pokhara 354.7 mm and 18.3 rain days. Hot in Chitwan.Possible with care
JuneMonsoon: cloud, rain, leeches and slippery trails. Pokhara 648.2 mm. Chitwan has floods and some lodges close. No
JulyMonsoon and the wettest month: 941 mm at Pokhara, 25.6 rain days.No
AugustMonsoon. Views are mostly lost: 839.4 mm at Pokhara. No
SeptemberThe rains are easing but the trails are still wet and leechy: 635 mm at Pokhara. No
OctoberDrying out and clearer each week: 159.2 mm at Pokhara. Busy around Dashain. Chitwan is lush and clear at 25 to 30 C.Best, from mid month
NovemberThe clearest skies of the year: 17.2 mm at Pokhara. Cold nights at base camp. It is peak season in Chitwan too.Best
DecemberClear and cold, 11.5 mm at Pokhara. Possible early in the month, hard from mid month. Chitwan is cool, with misty mornings.Early December only

Chitwan is best from October to March, and Annapurna Base Camp is best from mid October to mid November and in March and April, so late October, November and March suit both. Chitwan is hot from April and floods in the monsoon. One price applies all year.

Starting dates for 2027

You choose your start date, because every trip is private. These are the windows I would pick for 2027. Festival dates for 2027 are the expected ones from public calendars, and the government confirms them each year.

Getting there and getting back

On day 1 we drive from Kathmandu to Chitwan, five to six hours along the Trishuli river. On day 3 we drive on to Pokhara in your tier's vehicle. On day 4 we drive to Nayapul, with a short jeep to Kimche where the road needs it, and walk. After the trek your vehicle meets you at Nayapul and drives you to your Pokhara hotel, about 90 minutes, and on day 11 you fly to Kathmandu. Pokhara flights can be delayed by cloud, so keep a spare day before your international flight. We check road conditions 48 hours before departure. If a road is not open, we move your dates free of charge.

Visa on arrival is USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months. Read Nayapul: The Trailhead for Poon Hill, Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Danda for the trailhead.

Safety and altitude

On the safari, you follow your naturalist, keep to the jeep and the canoe and never walk into the forest alone. Wildlife is wild, and no sighting is guaranteed.

You sleep at 3,174 m at Deurali and 4,130 m at Annapurna Base Camp. Our own guideline is not to raise your sleeping height by more than 300 to 500 m a day above 3,000 m. Two days go beyond it: Chomrong to Deurali (about 1,004 m) and Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (about 956 m). There is no acclimatisation night on those days, which is why we take them slowly. Drink plenty of water and tell your guide at once about a headache or nausea. Your guide checks everyone's oxygen level every evening with a pulse oximeter. If a reading is low or symptoms appear, we do not go higher, and if they worsen we go down.

The long stone staircases and descents are hard on the knees. Trekking poles help. Buy travel insurance at home that covers trekking to 4,500 m and helicopter evacuation.

Essential information

Before you go

  • Altitude: you sleep as high as 4,130 m. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book.
  • Fitness: you need to walk two to seven hours a day with a day pack on steps and uneven ground, for seven days. No technical skill is needed.
  • Wildlife: sightings are never guaranteed, and tigers are rarely seen. The rhinoceros is common on a jeep safari.
  • Best months: mid October to mid November, then March and April. The monsoon brings leeches on the trail and floods in Chitwan.
  • Road: We check road conditions 48 hours before departure. If a road is not open, we move your dates free of charge.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover trekking to 4,500 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
  • Spare days: keep at least one spare day before your international flight, because Pokhara flights can be delayed.
  • Hotels: two Chitwan nights and two Pokhara nights are included. Kathmandu nights are not. We can book them for you, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.

Questions people ask

How hard is this trip?
It is graded Moderate. The two Chitwan days are flat and short. The seven trek days are 2 to 7 hours, with the Chomrong staircase and a 7 hour day to Deurali, and long stone-step descents on the way down. You sleep at 4,130 m at base camp. No technical skill is needed, but you need good fitness and some previous hiking.
How much does it cost?
For a couple, the price per person is USD 1,345 Budget, USD 1,970 Standard and USD 2,695 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 2,170, USD 2,705 and USD 4,075. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 735, USD 1,315 and USD 2,045 for 13 to 20 guests. Two Chitwan nights, two Pokhara hotel nights, the flight back and every permit are inside. These are our 2027 prices. If we have already quoted you a price in writing, we hold it.
What do we do in Chitwan?
You go on a jeep safari in the national park, a guided jungle walk at the forest edge, a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti river and a Tharu cultural evening, and you look for birds at every stage. It is two nights and one full day beside the park.
Will we see a rhino or a tiger?
Rhinoceros sightings are common on a jeep safari, but no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed. Tigers live in the park and are rarely seen. We offer no animal rides of any kind.
How high does the trek go and is altitude a problem?
Annapurna Base Camp is 4,130 m, and you sleep there. Two days gain more than our own guideline of 300 to 500 m of sleeping height a day above 3,000 m: Chomrong to Deurali (about 1,004 m) and Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (about 956 m). There is no acclimatisation night on them, so we take them slowly. Your guide checks your oxygen level every evening, and if someone is unwell we do not go higher. Tell us about heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions before you book.
How long is each day of walking?
Day 4 is 3 hours after a 90 minute drive, day 5 is 4 hours, day 6 is about 7 hours, day 7 is 2 to 3 hours, day 8 is about 6 hours, day 9 is about 4 hours and day 10 is a morning descent, then a drive to Pokhara.
Why Chitwan first and the mountain second?
Because the jungle is flat and warm, so your legs get two easy days first, and because you end the trip in Pokhara with a hot shower and a short flight, not a long drive. It also puts the hard part in the middle, with spare time at either end if the weather slips.
When is the best time to go?
Mid October to mid November is the best window for both parts. March and April work too, but Chitwan can reach 35 to 40 C. In 2027 Dashain is expected around 6 to 10 October and Tihar around 29 to 31 October. December to February is hard on the upper trail, and the monsoon brings floods in Chitwan and leeches on the trail. See the month-by-month and 2027 tables on this page.
Are hotels included?
Two Chitwan lodge nights and two Pokhara hotel nights (the first before the trek and the second after it) are included, matched to your tier. Kathmandu hotel nights are not, so you can choose your own. We can book them, or you can stay at our family homestay for USD 15 per person per night.
Is the road to the trailhead open?
We check road conditions 48 hours before departure. If a road is not open, we move your dates free of charge.
Can I do this trip alone?
Yes. A solo traveller travels with a licensed guide, and you pay the solo price in the table, which covers a whole room. On Standard a solo trekker has no porter, so the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. On Luxury you have your own dedicated porter. Budget never has a porter.
How do I pay?
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu before the trip. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge. Cash in Kathmandu carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
What happens if I need to cancel, or you cannot run the trip?
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers trekking to 4,500 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
What is not included in the price of the Annapurna Base Camp and Chitwan trip?

Kathmandu hotel nights before and after the trip are not included, and neither are international flights, the Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, paid in cash on arrival), tips and travel insurance. On Budget you also pay for your own meals on the trek and for lunch and dinner at the hotels, while Standard and Luxury include them. An extra porter is USD 25 per day plus 13% VAT and the 3.5% bank charge. For 2 to 4 people the price is from USD 1,345 per person on Budget, USD 1,970 on Standard and USD 2,695 on Luxury.

Who carries my bag on the Annapurna Base Camp part of this trip?

On Budget nobody does, because you carry your own pack. On Standard there is one porter for every two trekkers, so each of you gives about 10 kg to the shared porter, and the government maximum is 20 kg per porter. On Luxury you have your own porter. If you travel solo on Standard there is no porter and your guide carries up to 10 kg of your kit.

Where do we sleep on the seven day Annapurna Base Camp trek, and how high is each night?

The nights are Ghandruk at 1,940 m, Chomrong at 2,170 m, Deurali at 3,174 m, Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m, Bamboo at 2,310 m and Jhinu Danda at 1,780 m, and then a hotel in Pokhara. The highest night is the one at base camp, so the body has only one real night above 3,200 m. Budget uses shared rooms in simple teahouses, Standard private twin rooms and Luxury private deluxe rooms, with an attached bathroom where the lodge has one.

What do I see at Annapurna Base Camp and on the way down?

On day 7 you pass Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,720 m, a good place for tea, and sleep at Annapurna Base Camp inside the ring of Annapurna I, South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. You wake early on day 8 for first light on Annapurna I. On day 9 you leave the main trail for a quieter path to Jhinu Danda, where there are hot springs. Cloud can hide the peaks on any morning, so we cannot promise the view.

What if the Pokhara to Kathmandu flight on the last day is delayed?

Pokhara flights can be held up by cloud, so please keep at least one spare day before your international flight. We suggest the same spare day on day 11, when we meet you in Kathmandu. If a delay costs you a night, extra hotel nights are not included, but we can book them for you. Our family homestay in Kathmandu is USD 15 per person per night.
