Why I built it this way

Many people come to Nepal for the mountains and only later realise that the Buddha's birthplace and the Chitwan jungle sit next to each other on the plains. This tour puts the two together in five days. You fly to Bhairahawa, spend two nights at Lumbini with the Sacred Garden, the monastery zone and Tilaurakot, then drive to Chitwan for two nights and a full day of safari, and drive back to Kathmandu.

It is the second half of our Kathmandu, Lumbini and Chitwan in 7 Days: Day by Day, Cost and Who It Suits. If you have not seen Kathmandu yet, that 7-day tour adds two days of the city's temples first. If you have, or you are coming off a trek, this 5-day version saves you the repeat. Read Lumbini, Nepal: Birthplace of the Buddha Travel Guide and Tilaurakot: The Walled Site Where Siddhartha Grew Up, 27 km from Lumbini before you choose.

There is no altitude and almost no walking beyond the sites and the jungle walk. The real challenges are the heat from April to June and the road from Chitwan to Kathmandu, which takes five to six hours. We do not sell animal rides. Our Chitwan days are a jeep, a dugout canoe, a walk with a naturalist, Tharu culture and birds.

Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Best time to go, month by month

Temperatures and conditions come from our Lumbini guide and our Chitwan seasonal guide. They are guides to the seasons, not forecasts.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
JanuaryCool and dry. Fog in the mornings in Lumbini and Chitwan can delay flights and the early safari. Rhinos are near-certain in the thin cover. Lumbini is busy with pilgrims.Good, keep a spare day for the flight
FebruaryCool, dry and busy with pilgrims at Lumbini. Chitwan has migratory birds and thin cover.Good
MarchLumbini is still in its 18 to 28 C window early on. Chitwan heats up, and March is a good month for seeing rhinos up close.Good
AprilHot. Lumbini can pass 38 C and the monastery zone is an exposed walk. Chitwan reaches 35 to 40 C. Activities run early morning and late afternoon.Only if you can take the heat
MayHot and dusty. Lumbini can pass 38 C. Buddha Jayanti draws large crowds of pilgrims, and lodges fill.Only for the festival or if you can take the heat
JuneMonsoon and humid. Chitwan floods, canoe rides can stop and leeches appear. Some lodges close. No
JulyMonsoon. Daily rain on the plains, floods in Chitwan. No
AugustMonsoon. Some monastery galleries close for the wet season. No
SeptemberThe rains are easing, but the roads are still wet and some lodges are still shut.Late September only
OctoberLush and clear after the rains, 25 to 30 C in Chitwan. Peak birding. Book ahead.Best
NovemberDry and clear, with Lumbini in its 18 to 28 C window. Pilgrim season starts in late November.Best
DecemberCool, dry and sunny, with fog in the mornings. Flights to Bhairahawa can be delayed in December and January.Good, keep a spare day for the flight

October to March is the dry and cool window for both Lumbini and Chitwan, and October to December is the sweet spot. April to June is hot, and June to September is monsoon. One price applies all year.

Starting dates for 2027

These are the windows I would pick for 2027. Festival dates are the expected ones and are confirmed each year.

Not included: international flights, your Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, paid in cash on arrival), Kathmandu hotel nights, travel insurance, tips and personal spending. You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge, and cash in Kathmandu has no fee.

Getting there and getting back

On day 1 we collect you from your Kathmandu hotel and you fly to Bhairahawa, about 30 minutes, then drive 25 km to Lumbini. On day 3 we drive from Lumbini to Chitwan, about four hours. On day 5 we drive from Chitwan to Kathmandu, five to six hours along the Trishuli river, and drop you at your hotel. Kathmandu nights are not included in the price. The small aircraft have a tight baggage limit, so pack light, and the flight is weather-dependent. We check road conditions 48 hours before departure. If a road is not open, we move your dates free of charge.

Visa on arrival is USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Safety and altitude

There is no altitude on this tour. The risks are heat, dust and the road. In April to June Lumbini can pass 38 C and Chitwan 40 C, so we start early, rest at midday and carry water. On the safari you follow your naturalist, keep to the jeep and the canoe and never walk into the forest alone. Wildlife is wild, and no sighting is guaranteed.

Dress modestly in the temples and monasteries: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, voices low. Buy travel insurance at home that covers domestic flights and medical care.

What to pack

  • Light clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, for the temples and monasteries
  • Comfortable shoes you can slip off easily
  • A hat, sunglasses and SPF 50 sun cream
  • Neutral clothes in greens and browns for the jungle days, and insect repellent
  • A light jacket for cool mornings and evenings from November to February
  • Binoculars if you have them
  • A small bag for the flight, which has a tight baggage limit
  • Any personal medicines

Essential information

Before you go

  • What to wear: light clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, a hat and comfortable shoes you can slip off.
  • Season: October to March is best. April to June is very hot and the monsoon brings heavy rain and floods in Chitwan.
  • Flights: the aircraft are small, with a tight baggage limit, and the timetable is weather-dependent. Pack light.
  • Wildlife: sightings are never guaranteed, and tigers are rarely seen. The rhinoceros is common on a jeep safari.
  • Vegetarians: monastery kitchens and hotels cater for vegetarian eaters easily; tell us if you eat no egg or no onion and garlic.
  • Spare days: keep at least one spare day before your international flight.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover domestic flights and medical care. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
  • Hotels: two Lumbini nights and two Chitwan nights are included. Kathmandu nights before or after the tour are not. We can book them for you, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.

Questions people ask

What is included in the Lumbini and Chitwan tour?
The flight to Bhairahawa, road transport for the whole tour in your tier's vehicle, two nights at Lumbini and two at a Chitwan jungle lodge, your guide and naturalist, the Lumbini and Chitwan entry fees, the jeep safari, canoe ride, jungle walk and Tharu cultural evening. Meals depend on the tier.
How much does it cost?
For a couple, the price per person is USD 1,030 Budget, USD 1,335 Standard and USD 1,705 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 1,635, USD 2,040 and USD 2,885. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 600, USD 870 and USD 1,245 for 13 to 20 guests. These are our 2027 prices. If we have already quoted you a price in writing, we hold it.
How is this different from your 7-day tour?
The 7-day tour adds two days of Kathmandu sightseeing at the start: Swayambhunath, Durbar Square, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath. This 5-day tour starts with the flight to Bhairahawa, for people who have seen Kathmandu already or are coming off a trek.
How do we get to Lumbini?
By a short flight of about 30 minutes from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, then 25 km by road. The return is by road: Lumbini to Chitwan is about four hours, and Chitwan to Kathmandu five to six.
What will we see at Lumbini?
The Maya Devi Temple over the excavated remains of earlier shrines, the sacred pond and the Ashoka pillar in the Sacred Garden, the monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries along the canal, and Tilaurakot, the walled site identified with the Shakya capital where Siddhartha grew up.
Will we see a rhino or a tiger in Chitwan?
Rhinoceros sightings are common on a jeep safari, but no sighting is ever guaranteed. Tigers live in the park and are rarely seen. We offer no animal rides of any kind.
When is the best time to go in 2027?
Mid September to March. April to June is very hot, and Buddha Jayanti on the May full moon is busy at Lumbini. July to mid September is monsoon, with floods in Chitwan. Fog can delay the Bhairahawa flight in December and January mornings.
What should I wear at the temples?
Light clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, and shoes you can slip off at the Maya Devi Temple and the monasteries. Keep your voice low in the Sacred Garden.
Is it suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes. There is no altitude and very little walking. The long drives and the heat are the hard parts, so we start early and rest at midday. A child pays the same as an adult.
Are hotels included?
Yes, two nights at Lumbini and two nights at a Chitwan jungle lodge, matched to your tier. Kathmandu nights before and after the tour are not included. We can book them, or you can stay at our family homestay for USD 15 per person per night.
Can I do it alone?
Yes, with your own guide. A solo traveller pays for a room and a vehicle alone, which is why the solo price is higher.
How do I pay?
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance when you arrive in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge. Cash in Kathmandu carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
What happens if I need to cancel, or you cannot run the trip?
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers the tour. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
