Tilaurakot is a walled site 27 km west of Lumbini that Nepali archaeologists identify with the Shakya capital. What you see, how old it is, the Piprahwa debate and how to visit.

Last updated 12 October 2026.

Tilaurakot is a quiet excavated site in the farmland of Kapilvastu District, about 27 km west of Lumbini, where brick gateways, a moat and palace foundations mark what Nepali archaeologists identify as the capital of the Shakya kingdom. This is the city where, in Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha Gautama grew up before he left home. Most visitors see Lumbini and go straight on to Chitwan. We add Tilaurakot on day 4 of our 7-day tour and on day 3 of our 4-day Lumbini tour, because it explains why Lumbini matters.

Short answer: Tilaurakot is a walled archaeological site on the bank of the Banaganga river, about 27 km west of Lumbini. It may be the ancient Kapilavastu where the Buddha spent his first 29 years, though some scholars argue for Piprahwa in India. You see brick gateways, a moat and palace foundations, and on our trips you often have the site nearly to yourselves. It is an easy visit, best between October and March, and our Lumbini tours include the entrance fee.

Where does Tilaurakot sit on our trips?

The 4-day tour costs USD 905 (Budget), USD 1,105 (Standard) or USD 1,605 (Luxury) per person for 2 to 4 people. The 7-day tour costs USD 1,370, USD 1,690 or USD 2,485. My guide to Lumbini covers the Sacred Garden, and my itinerary post on Kathmandu, Lumbini and Chitwan in 7 days shows how Tilaurakot fits.

What is Tilaurakot?

Tilaurakot is a fortified citadel of about 500 m by 400 m. The excavations show a double earthen wall, later rebuilt in brick, with a central inner walled complex and monumental gateways on the north and west sides. There is also a moat or ditch system and the remains of what may be palace buildings, plus stupas and Buddhist monasteries. The site stands on the bank of the Banaganga river.

The ground has been dug many times. P.C. Mukherji excavated it in 1899. A joint Nepali and Indian team worked there in 1962, the Nepali Department of Archaeology between 1967 and 1972, and a Japanese team from Rissho University from 1967 to 1977. UNESCO-sponsored work in 1997 and 1999 produced radiocarbon dates, and further excavations followed in 2012 and 2013. The dates suggest early farming around 620 BCE and city life from about 570 BCE. That fits the period of the Buddha, although the dates have a wide margin, and I would not claim more than that.

Is this really where the Buddha grew up?

Possibly, and I will say so plainly. Nepali archaeologists identify Tilaurakot with the capital of the Shakya kingdom, where Siddhartha lived for his first 29 years. Some scholars say Kapilavastu was Piprahwa, across the border in India. I am not an archaeologist, and I do not think the question is settled. Your guide will tell you both sides on the day, and you can decide for yourself while you stand at the gateway. What is not in doubt is that this is an ancient walled city of the right age, a short drive from the birthplace.

What do you see when you visit?

You see the brick gateways, the moat and the palace foundations. The roads to the site are rural and the days are long, but the sites are quiet and you often have them to yourselves. On the 4-day tour we continue to the Kapilvastu area and to Gotihawa, where the stump of an Ashokan pillar still stands in a village field. The 7-day tour has time for Tilaurakot only, and Kapilvastu and Gotihawa need a second day. Bring water, and a hat in the warm months.

How far is Tilaurakot from Lumbini?

RouteDistance
Lumbini to TilaurakotAbout 27 km west, each way
Kathmandu to Bhairahawa (Lumbini's airport)A flight of about 30 minutes
Bhairahawa to LumbiniAbout 25 km by road
Lumbini to ChitwanAbout 4 hours by road, the next stop on the 7-day tour

When is the best time to visit?

MonthsWhat it is like
October to NovemberDry and clear, the best months. Pilgrim season starts in late November
December to FebruaryCool, dry and sunny, with morning fog that can delay flights to Bhairahawa
MarchPleasant early in the month, then heating up
April to MayHot. Lumbini can pass 38 C
June to SeptemberMonsoon, with wet roads

For 2027, I would plan October to March. Buddha Jayanti is expected on 20 May 2027 and the lodges in Lumbini fill, so go then only if the festival is the point. Read my festival calendar for the dates. Keep a spare day before your international flight, because winter fog can delay the Bhairahawa flight.
