Lumbini is the place Buddhist tradition holds to be the Buddha's birthplace, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This four-day tour flies you there from Kathmandu in a short flight, instead of a long day on the road, and gives you three nights in Lumbini itself.

You spend your time in the Sacred Garden with the Maya Devi Temple and the Ashoka pillar, in the monastic zone, and at Tilaurakot, Kapilvastu and Gotihawa in the countryside to the west.

It suits pilgrims and culture travellers. The ground is flat and there is no altitude. The plains are very hot from April to September, so the best months are October to March. Winter fog can delay the flights.

Fixed departures are dates we have already committed to run. Your party still treks as its own private group with its own guide; we never merge bookings or add strangers, and solo trekkers are welcome on any date. Private departures on any other date you choose are also available. On both, the per-person price is set by the size of your own party.

  • What to wear: light clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, a hat and comfortable shoes you can slip off.
  • Season: October to March is best. April to September is very hot and the monsoon brings heavy rain.
  • Flights: small aircraft with a tight baggage limit and a weather-dependent timetable. Pack light.
  • Vegetarians: monastery kitchens and Lumbini hotels cater for vegetarian eaters easily; tell us if you eat no egg or no onion and garlic.

FAQs

Yes. The return flights between Kathmandu and Bhairahawa are included in all three options, along with your guide's own flights.
Domestic flights depend on the weather, and fog in the plains in December and January is the usual cause. We rebook the next available flight and shift the sightseeing around it. If the delay costs you a whole day, we tell you which site we shorten.
The sites and flights are the same. Budget gives you a simple twin-share hotel, breakfast and an English-speaking guide. Standard gives you a 3-star private room, all meals and a guide in your language where we have one. Luxury gives you the best available hotel with an ensuite room, all meals and a heritage specialist guide.
Not comfortably. The sites are spread out and the days are hot. Three nights lets you see the Sacred Garden, the monasteries and Tilaurakot without rushing.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice notice.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers medical care, cancellation and domestic flights. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
