Nepal Buddhist Circuit in 7 Days: Lumbini, Kathmandu Valley Sites, Cost and Who It Suits (2027)
Last updated 15 October 2026.
Short answer: Our 7 Days Nepal Buddhist Circuit Tour takes you through the main Buddhist sites of the Kathmandu Valley and then by road to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, and back. It costs USD 999 (Budget), USD 1,299 (Standard) or USD 2,149 (Luxury) per person when 2 to 4 people travel together, and USD 1,749, USD 1,999 or USD 2,849 for a solo traveller. Hotels in Kathmandu and Lumbini, a private vehicle, an English-speaking guide and every entrance fee are included. There is no trekking and no altitude. The best months are October to March, and it suits pilgrims, older travellers and anyone who wants temples rather than trails. Count on two long road days.
I am Shreejan. Several guests a year write to me and say, "I do not want mountains. I want to see where the Buddha was born, and the monasteries in Kathmandu." This is the tour I built for them.

Which Buddhist sites are on the Nepal Buddhist Circuit?
Only the ones in the itinerary. I will not list a site I do not take you to.
| Day | What happens | Night at |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport pick-up and transfer to your hotel | Kathmandu |
| 2 | Swayambhunath, Kapan Gumba and Boudhanath, 3 to 5 hours of sightseeing | Kathmandu |
| 3 | Drive east for 2 to 2.5 hours to Namobuddha, lunch, then the cave monasteries of Pharping on the way back | Kathmandu |
| 4 | Drive to Lumbini by road, a full day | Lumbini |
| 5 | Lumbini: Maya Devi Temple, Ashoka pillar and the monastery zone | Lumbini |
| 6 | Drive back to Kathmandu, 7 to 8 hours | Kathmandu |
| 7 | Transfer to the airport for your flight home | No night |
On day 2 you see three very different places. Swayambhunath stands on a hill, and you climb 365 steps past the monkeys. Kapan Gumba is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery above the city, and visitors can watch the monks at their rituals. Boudhanath is the great stupa where pilgrims walk around the mandala. If you would like to read first, I have written about Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, and the Kathmandu temples in one day.
Day 3 is the quieter day. Namobuddha is the hilltop stupa that remembers the story of a prince who gave his body to a starving tigress and her cubs. In the afternoon we stop at Pharping, where the Asura Cave and the Yangleshö Cave are holy to Guru Rinpoche, and where you hear chanting from the temple halls. My notes on Pharping and Champadevi say more.
What do you see in Lumbini on this tour?
Lumbini is where Buddhist tradition places the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 5 is spent here. You visit the Maya Devi Temple, built over the marked spot of the birth, and the sacred pond beside it. You see the Ashoka pillar, put up by the Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, with the inscription that names Lumbini as the birthplace. Then you walk the monastery zone, where the eastern half holds the Theravada monasteries and the western half the Mahayana and Vajrayana ones. The sightseeing is about three hours. We start early because Lumbini is hot from spring.
What does it cost to enter the Sacred Garden at Lumbini? The fee for foreign visitors is NPR 1,000, and it is inside our price along with every other entrance fee on the tour. You do not pay at the gate. My Lumbini travel guide covers the site in detail, including the 3 km between the garden and the World Peace Pagoda, which is why we use bicycles or an electric rickshaw.
One honest gap. The day list has no day at Tilaurakot, the walled site 27 km west of Lumbini that Nepali archaeologists identify with the Shakya capital, or at Kapilvastu. If those matter to you, tell me before you book and I will quote an extra day, or look at the 4-day tour below. I have written a guide to Tilaurakot.
How many days do you need for a Buddhist circuit in Nepal?
Seven days is a comfortable week if you accept that two of them are mostly in the car. You get two full days of Kathmandu Valley sites, a day in Lumbini and a day on each road. Fewer days means flying, which I cover next. More days only help if you want Tilaurakot, a retreat at a monastery or a rest day.
Should you fly or drive from Kathmandu to Lumbini?
This itinerary drives both ways. Our page gives the road as 287 km out and 275 km back, and quotes 7 to 8 hours each way. Traffic and roadworks can stretch that, and my Lumbini guide quotes 9 to 11 hours for the same road, so I tell guests to count on a full day and leave early. The upside is that you see the country. The downside is that two of your seven days are travel days.
If that sounds like too much, the flight is the answer. Kathmandu to Bhairahawa is about 30 minutes, then 25 km by road to Lumbini. That is how our 4-day Lumbini tour works, and the table below compares the three trips. Flights in small aircraft depend on weather, and winter fog on the plains can delay them in December and January.
| Trip | Days | How you get to Lumbini | Budget / Standard / Luxury, 2 to 4 people | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nepal Buddhist Circuit | 7 | Road both ways | USD 999 / 1,299 / 2,149 | Kathmandu monasteries and Lumbini in one trip |
| Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace, 4 days | 4 | Flight | USD 905 / 1,105 / 1,605 | Lumbini, Tilaurakot, Kapilvastu and Gotihawa without the long drive |
| Kathmandu, Lumbini and Chitwan, 7 days | 7 | Flight | USD 1,370 / 1,690 / 2,485 | Temples, Lumbini and the jungle by jeep, canoe and walking |
If you want the temple-and-jungle mix, read my Kathmandu, Lumbini and Chitwan guide. The 4-day trip is cheaper than this one because it has fewer nights, and it adds Tilaurakot. The circuit is the one with the Kathmandu monasteries and Namobuddha.
How much does the Nepal Buddhist Circuit cost?
| Group size | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 traveller (solo) | USD 1,749 | USD 1,999 | USD 2,849 |
| 2 to 4 travellers | USD 999 | USD 1,299 | USD 2,149 |
| 5 to 8 travellers | USD 729 | USD 999 | USD 1,799 |
| 9 to 12 travellers | USD 619 | USD 889 | USD 1,649 |
| 13 to 20 travellers | USD 559 | USD 829 | USD 1,649 |
Every price is per person. A private trip and a group of the same size cost the same, and we never merge separate private bookings. A solo traveller pays more because the vehicle and guide cost the same for one person as for two.
What is included, and what is not?
This is a tour, so unlike our treks, the hotels are in the price. All three tiers include airport pick-up and drop-off, hotels in Kathmandu and Lumbini, an English-speaking guide, a private vehicle between the cities, every entrance fee and government tax, a farewell meal, a certificate, a SIM card and free storage for your spare luggage.
| Budget | Standard | Luxury | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotels | Tourist hotels | Standard tourist hotels | Luxury hotels |
| Meals | Breakfast only | Breakfast, lunch and dinner | Breakfast, lunch and dinner |
| Vehicle | Local transport | Tourist transport | Luxury tourist transport |
| SIM card | Yes | Limited data | Unlimited data |
Not included: your international flights, the visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, paid in cash at the airport), extra hotel nights in Kathmandu before or after the tour, tips for the guide and your drinks. On Budget you also pay for your own lunch and dinner. Buy your travel insurance at home, with medical and emergency evacuation cover. The highest point on this tour is Namobuddha at about 1,750 m, so cover to 2,000 m is enough. I advise against any policy bought in Nepal.
When is the best time to go on a Buddhist circuit in Nepal?
| Months | What it is like | My view |
|---|---|---|
| October to November | Dry and clear after the rains. Dashain, usually in October, fills the roads and hotels | Best, but avoid the Dashain days |
| December to February | Cool and dry, with morning fog in Lumbini. The main pilgrim season is late November to February | Good |
| March | Warming up, still comfortable | Good |
| April to early June | Hot. Lumbini can pass 38 C, and the monastery zone has little shade. Buddha Jayanti falls in April or May and the lodges fill | Only for the festival |
| Late June to September | Monsoon. Daily rain in the plains, and some monasteries close their interior galleries | Avoid |
For 2027 I would aim for November or the weeks from January to March. Lumbini between 18 and 28 C is a pleasure. Lumbini at 38 C is a test.
Who is the Nepal Buddhist Circuit tour for?
It suits pilgrims who want to follow the Buddha's life and then see living monasteries. It suits older travellers and couples, because the walking is flat and slow, apart from the steps at Swayambhunath, and your guide sets the pace. It suits a solo traveller, because there is no trek to organise. It also suits someone planning the Annapurna Circuit next year who wants something gentle first.
It does not suit you if you want mountain views, because Lumbini is in the plains. It does not suit you if two long road days will spoil the week. In that case, take the flight version.
How should you dress and behave at monasteries and Lumbini?
Cover your shoulders and knees at every temple and monastery. A light scarf works well for women in summer. Take your shoes off at the Maya Devi Temple and at monastery prayer halls, so wear socks or slip-ons. Keep your voice low. Cameras are not allowed inside the Maya Devi Temple, and most monastery prayer halls also forbid photographs, so ask your guide at each door. Ask before you photograph monks or anyone at prayer. Walk clockwise around stupas and past prayer wheels, as the local people do. Carry water in Lumbini, because the monastery zone is large and the shops cluster near the entrance.
