Why I added the road version

Our 10-day Rara Lake Trek flies to Jumla and out from Talcha. It is the one most people choose, because it saves days. But some of you do not want to fly, some of you have been caught by cancelled flights in the far west, and some of you simply want to see how the country changes between Kathmandu and Karnali. This version drives in and walks only around Rara, so it is the lake itself, not the Jumla to Rara pass walk.

The cost of the road is time and patience, not money alone. Kathmandu to Surkhet is a full day. The operators who run this road give about 13 hours, and one says 13 to 15. From Surkhet the Karnali Highway climbs through Kalikot to the Rara side. If you have only ten days, take the flying trek.

We run this as a private trek by default, and we never add strangers to your booking. If you would rather have company on the trail, you can choose a fixed departure instead. Either way the price per person is the same.

Every booking on this trip helps us pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum, where 70 children get free education. The salary is currently funded out of my own pocket. Your trek is what makes that sustainable.

The road, day by day, and what we know

Kathmandu to Surkhet: about 13 hours (one operator lists 605 km in 13 hours, another says 13 to 15 hours). Surkhet to Kalikot: about 6 to 8 hours (two operators give 6 to 7 and 7 to 8). Kalikot on to the Rara side: about 4 hours (one operator). Put together, Surkhet to Rara can be done in one very long day when the road is clear, and two days is normal.

The highway beyond Surkhet is rough. One operator calls the Surkhet to Nagma stretch a rough, unpaved road that needs a strong 4WD vehicle, and the Nagma to Gamgadhi stretch a difficult dirt road with landslide risk. Nepali newspapers reported this highway blocked by landslides in July, August and September 2026. A closure can last hours or days, so the stops are never promised in advance. Night one is Surkhet. Night two is Rara itself, or Kalikot or Gamgadhi on the way, and I tell you which when I see the road. On the way home it is Talcha to Surkhet in one long day, about 10 to 12 hours once you add the sections up, and Surkhet to Kathmandu the day after.

What I cannot tell you yet

I do not have a published timetable for this road, so the hours above are what other operators report, not our own measurements. Two days are kept spare in the plan, day 9 at Talcha and day 12 in Kathmandu, because landslides and weather decide the road, not us. If the road is clear you may simply have a quiet extra day.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Time on the road: this is a long road trip. Kathmandu to Surkhet alone is about 13 hours, and the highway beyond is rough. Bring something to read and a neck pillow.
  • Walking: five days on foot, up to 6 hours a day, with a rest day at the lake. The highest point is Ghorasinga at 3,050 m.
  • Mobile signal around Rara is very limited. We give you a SIM in Kathmandu, but expect gaps.
  • Porters: Standard has one porter for every two trekkers, so each guest keeps to 10 kg. Luxury has a porter each, with a 15 kg bag. Budget has no porter: you carry your own bag. The government limit is 20 kg per porter and we keep to our own lighter standard. Porters are hired locally near Talcha.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover emergency helicopter rescue up to 3,500 m.
  • Kathmandu hotels before and after the trip are not included. Tell us your dates and we quote them separately.
  • Spare days: landslides and weather can slow the road. Day 12 is a buffer day in Kathmandu, so please do not book an international flight home before day 12.

Prefer to fly? Our Rara Lake Trek, 10 Days flies to Jumla and out from Talcha, and saves two days.

FAQs

Yes. This trip drives all the way, both ways, and walks only around Rara. You drive from Kathmandu to Surkhet, then up the Karnali Highway to Talcha, walk up to the lake, spend four nights on its shore with a rest day, walk the ridge to Ghorasinga and back, then drive home. There are no flights. It takes 12 days.
Other operators who run it report Kathmandu to Surkhet at about 13 hours (one lists 605 km), Surkhet to Kalikot at about 6 to 8 hours, and Kalikot on to the Rara side at about 4 hours. Overland journey totals of two to three days are common. A newspaper piece from 2023 says a bus reaches Rara from Surkhet in one day, so a very long single day is possible when the road is clear. These are other operators' figures, not our own timings, and landslides can change them.
The 10-day trek flies to Jumla, walks over the Jaljala pass to the lake and flies out from Talcha. This one drives, starts walking at Talcha and stays around the lake, so it is longer and does not cross Jaljala. On 18 October 2026 the 10-day trek was USD 2,290 Budget, USD 2,835 Standard and USD 3,615 Luxury for two to four trekkers, and this trip is USD 1,010, USD 1,715 and USD 5,110. Luxury costs more by road because you have your own Land Cruiser from Kathmandu for the whole trip.
Three reasons come up. Some people do not fly. Some have been caught by cancelled flights in the far west, where the airstrips are short and the weather windows are narrow. And some want to see the country between Kathmandu and Karnali on the ground. The cost is time: the road is long and rough in places. If you have only ten days, take the flying trek.
The walking is Moderate. You walk five days, up to six hours a day, with a rest day at the lake. The highest point is Ghorasinga at 3,050 m, and the lake is at 2,990 m. The harder part is the road: a long day each way from Kathmandu to Surkhet, and long days on the highway between Surkhet and Talcha.
You need the Rara National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Both are included in the price, and we arrange them in Kathmandu. The standard Rara route is not a restricted area, so you do not need a restricted-area permit. The Department of Immigration lists Mugu as restricted only for the Mugumakarmarong area, on the Mugu, Dolphu, Pulu and Bhangri route. Rara Lake sits in Chhayanath Rara municipality, and this trip does not go to that route.
Yes. We always send a licensed guide, and Rara is remote with little signposting. Your guide stays with you for all 12 days.
Budget uses local bus or shared jeep seats for you and your guide. Standard uses shared tourist vehicle seats. Luxury uses your own Land Cruiser with a driver from Kathmandu all the way, one vehicle for up to four guests and the guide, with more vehicles for bigger groups. On the trail, nobody rides: everyone walks.
On the road you sleep in hotels in Surkhet and at one stop on the way in: basic on Budget, standard with a private room on Standard, the best available on Luxury. At Rara, Ghorasinga and Talcha you sleep in local teahouses and lodges. They are simple: a bed, a blanket and home-cooked food, with shared toilets and limited hot water. Standard has private rooms and Luxury has private deluxe rooms with an attached bathroom where there is one. Budget shares a room.
Porters are hired locally near Talcha. Standard has one porter for every two trekkers, so each guest packs 10 kg and the porter carries 20 kg at most. Luxury has a porter for each trekker, with a 15 kg bag. Budget has no porter and you carry your own bag. The government limit is 20 kg per porter, and we have seen porters on the trail carry far more, which is why we keep to our own lighter standard. A solo guest on Standard has no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg.
September to November and March to May. Spring brings rhododendron bloom and autumn has the clearest skies. Winter snow can close the high ground. In the monsoon (June to August) the trails are muddy and the road is more likely to be blocked by landslides.
It happens on this highway. Nepali newspapers reported the Karnali Highway blocked by landslides on 24 July, 21 August and 9 September 2026 (the last two on the Surkhet to Jumla section), and a closure of about a week in July 2025. That is why the trip has a spare day at Talcha and a buffer day in Kathmandu, and why we ask you not to book an international flight home before day 12. If the road is blocked we tell you at once, wait or change the route for safety. Extra costs from delays outside our control are not included in the price.
Travel insurance is required. It must cover emergency helicopter rescue up to 3,500 m, which covers Ghorasinga at 3,050 m. Buy it at home before you travel.
Plans change. We offer free rescheduling: give us at least 72 hours' notice and we move your trip to any date within a year at no charge. Your 10% deposit is not refunded if you cancel, and there is no refund when the client cancels. The balance is paid in Kathmandu. If we cannot run the trip, we refund what you paid less taxes, bank and card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, such as permits.
