Why I added this version

Our 15-day Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek flies Luxury guests to Juphal, and sends Budget and Standard guests by road. Some of you asked for the flight on every tier, because the road eats three days and you would rather spend them walking. This is that trip. Everything on the trail is the same as the Circuit trek. Only the way in and the way out is different.

The cost of the flights is real: about USD 780 per person in air fares alone, before the guide's own tickets. That is why this trip is priced higher than the road version for Budget and Standard. Flights to Juphal are also weather-dependent, so please keep a spare day or two at the end.

We run this as a private trek by default, and we never add strangers to your booking. If you would rather have company, you can join one of our fixed departures instead. Either way the price per person is the same.

Every booking helps us pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum, where 70 children get free education.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Flights: Nepalgunj to Juphal is a short mountain flight, about 40 minutes, and it depends on the weather. Delays of a day or more happen, and a week of disruption has been reported. Keep a spare day or two at the end.
  • Walking: 12 days on foot from Dunai to Juphal, 5 to 8 hours a day, with two passes above 5,000 m. Train for two to three months before you come.
  • Mobile signal and electricity are very limited from Dunai onwards. There are no ATMs beyond Dunai. We give you a SIM in Kathmandu, but expect gaps.
  • Porters: Standard has one porter for every two trekkers, so each guest keeps to 10 kg. Luxury has a porter each, with a bag of up to 20 kg. Budget has no porter. The government limit is 20 kg per porter and we keep to it.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover trekking to 5,500 m and emergency helicopter rescue.
  • Kathmandu hotels before and after the trip are not included. Tell us your dates and we quote them separately.

FAQs

For a couple, the price per person is USD 4,685 Budget, USD 5,715 Standard and USD 6,740 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 7,705 Budget, USD 8,570 Standard or USD 10,145 Luxury. The price falls as the group grows, and it is the same for a private trip and a group of the same size.
You fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, spend a night there, then take the short morning flight (about 40 minutes) to Juphal, the Dolpa airstrip. From Juphal you walk about 3 hours down to Dunai. On the way out you fly Juphal to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu. Flights in the far west depend on the weather, so we keep a spare day in mind and ask you not to book an international flight home for the day after the trek ends.
Three things: the Lower Dolpo restricted-area permit (USD 20 for the first week, then USD 5 per person per day), the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). We arrange and pay for all three in Kathmandu and they are included. A licensed guide is required on this route, and your guide is named on the permit.
Not without an agency and a licensed guide. Since 22 March 2026 the two-person minimum no longer applies, so one trekker can book with us. You must stay with your guide for the whole trek; walking apart from the guide in a restricted area is not allowed.
The highest point is the Numa La pass at about 5,190 m, followed by the Baga La at about 5,070 m. Dho Tarap, where you rest for a day, is at about 4,090 m. Phoksundo Lake is at about 3,612 m. Dunai, the start of the walking, is only about 2,100 m, so the climb is gradual for the first few days.
Strenuous. Days of 5 to 8 hours on rocky trails, two passes above 5,000 m, five nights in tents and basic lodges. You do not need technical climbing skills, but you should have done a multi-day trek before and trained for two to three months.
Cover for trekking to 5,500 m (the highest point rounded up to the next 500 m) with emergency helicopter rescue and medical costs. Helicopters cannot always reach the high passes in bad weather, so rescue can start from lower ground. Buy your insurance at home, not in Nepal.
Budget: you carry your own bag, and camp porters carry the tents and food. Standard: one porter for every two trekkers, so you keep to 10 kg each; a solo guest has no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg. Luxury: your own porter, with a bag of up to 20 kg. The government limit is 20 kg per porter and we keep to it.
Lodges and homestays in the lower villages, and tents at the high camps (Numa La base camp, Pelung Tang and Dajok Tang, plus a couple more depending on the season). Rooms are basic with shared toilets, and there is almost no mobile signal. On the camp nights our cook feeds the group.
April to June, and September to November. The high passes can be blocked by snow in winter and early spring, and the monsoon (July and August) makes trails muddy and the road unreliable.
One to 20 people. The price per person is the same for a private trip and a group of the same size, and it falls as the group grows. We never put strangers in your group; if you want company, you can join one of our fixed departures instead.
A 10% deposit holds your dates, and the rest is paid in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments of the balance carry a 3.5% bank charge. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
Free rescheduling: tell us at least 72 hours before departure (7 days on restricted-area trips) and we move you to any date within one year. The 10% deposit is not refunded if you cancel. If we cannot run the trip, we refund what you paid less taxes, bank charges and money already spent on permits and flights.
This trip flies on every tier. The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek (15 days) flies Luxury only, and Budget and Standard go by road. If you want everyone to go by road, take the 18-day Lower Dolpo Trek by Road.
