How Much Does a Chitwan Jungle Safari Cost in 2026?
A Chitwan jungle safari is the standard add-on to a Nepal trek, three days of rhinos, riverbanks and warm air after the cold of the mountains, and it is far cheaper than most first-time visitors expect. As of mid-2026, a realistic budget is US$150 to US$300 per person for the classic 2-night stay at market rates, with luxury lodges in another bracket entirely. Here is the honest cost breakdown from a Kathmandu operator that organises Chitwan year-round.
One thing before the numbers: The Everest Holiday does not sell or offer elephant-back safari, at any price, and we explain why in why we don't sell elephant rides. Everything below covers the activities we do run: jeep safaris, canoe trips, guided jungle walks and the breeding-centre visit.
What does the park entry fee cost?
Chitwan National Park charges foreign nationals NPR 2,000 (about US$15) per person per entry day, with SAARC nationals paying less. A typical safari visits the park on one or two days, so budget US$15 to 30 for entry fees. Guided activities also carry a small conservation levy that is normally folded into the activity price.
How much do the safari activities cost?
Market rates in Sauraha, the main tourist village on the park's edge, as of mid-2026:
- Shared jeep safari (half day, the core wildlife activity): US$25 to 45 per person including park fees. A private jeep runs US$150 to 200 for the vehicle, worth it for photographers.
- Canoe trip on the Rapti River (gharial and mugger crocodiles, water birds): US$10 to 20, often combined with a jungle walk.
- Guided jungle walk with two naturalist guides: US$15 to 30 for a half day.
- Elephant breeding centre visit: a few dollars' entry, usually reached by the canoe-and-walk combination.
- Tharu cultural show in the evening: US$3 to 5, and many lodges include it.
Booked separately, a full two-day activity programme comes to roughly US$60 to 110 per person. Package lodges bundle most of it, which is usually the better deal.
What do Chitwan lodges cost per night?
- Budget guesthouses in Sauraha: US$15 to 30 a night for a clean fan room, meals bought separately at US$4 to 8 a plate.
- Standard safari lodges: US$60 to 120 per person per night on full board, normally sold as packages with activities and guides included.
- Luxury lodges inside or beside the park: US$250 to 600+ per person per night, full board with private guides and vehicles. A different product altogether, and genuinely worth it if the budget allows.
How do I get to Chitwan, and what does transport cost?
- Tourist bus from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Sauraha: US$10 to 15, five to seven hours. Air-conditioned deluxe coaches run US$20 to 30.
- Private car: US$100 to 140 per vehicle each way, which splits well between three or four people and halves nothing but the discomfort.
- Flight from Kathmandu to Bharatpur: around US$150 one way for foreigners, 20 minutes in the air, then a 20-to-30-minute taxi to Sauraha. Sensible if your Nepal time is short.
What does a full safari package total per person?
| Trip | Budget (guesthouse + shared activities) | Standard (full-board lodge package) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 nights / 3 days | ~US$120 to 180 | ~US$180 to 300 |
| 3 nights / 4 days | ~US$160 to 240 | ~US$250 to 400 |
Those figures are market ranges including park fees, activities, lodging and meals, but excluding transport from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Two nights suits most itineraries; the third night earns its keep in the March-to-May dry season, when wildlife concentrates near water and a second jeep day pays off. What extra costs catch people out?
- Guide tips: customary rather than compulsory; US$5 to 10 per day for your naturalist guide is a normal benchmark, less for support staff.
- Drinks: cold beer and soft drinks at lodge bars carry resort pricing, NPR 400 to 700 a bottle.
- Season: October to March is peak, and the better standard lodges fill and hold their rates; the monsoon months (June to September) bring genuine discounts but hot, wet weather and longer grass, which makes wildlife harder to spot.
- Festival transport: around the big autumn festivals, buses and flights fill with domestic travellers, so book transport early if you are travelling then.
Is Chitwan worth adding to a trekking trip?
For most visitors, yes, precisely because it is unlike everything else in Nepal: flat, warm, green and loud with birdsong. One-horned rhino sightings are near-routine, wild elephants and sloth bears are realistic, and tigers are the lottery ticket. Costs are low by international safari standards; a Chitwan lodge stay costs a fraction of an African equivalent.
