What this ride is

The Annapurna Circuit on a mountain bike is the classic trek turned into the best long ride in Nepal. You ride up the Marsyangdi from Besisahar through Tal and Chame to Manang, rest a day at 3,540 metres, push up past Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi, then walk over the Thorong La at 5,416 metres while porters carry the bikes, and ride the far side down to Muktinath. From there the Kali Gandaki gives you two of the best descending days anywhere, Muktinath to Marpha and Marpha to Tatopani, before the last roll into Beni and the jeep to Pokhara. Twelve days from Kathmandu, nine on the bike, about 290 kilometres.

Is this ride for you?

Yes if you have done multi-day mountain bike trips before, you are fit enough to ride five or six hours a day for a week, and you can push a bike uphill for two days without hating it. The road above Chame is rough jeep track and the days above Manang are mostly pushing, then the pass day is a long walk at altitude with the bikes on porters' backs. If that sounds like an adventure, this is your ride. If you want to stay on the bike all day every day, look at our Kathmandu valley rim tour or the Mustang ride, which have no pass to walk over.

How high, how hard

The high point is the Thorong La at 5,416 metres, crossed on foot on day eight. You sleep at Manang for two nights to acclimatise and at Thorong Phedi at 4,540 metres the night before the pass. The altitude is the serious part of this trip and we treat it seriously: a rest day, a slow pace above Manang, an oximeter every evening, and the guide's call on the pass day is final. Graded strenuous.

The riding

Besisahar to Manang is jeep road, rough in places, climbing all the way, with river crossings and waterfalls in the lower valley and the big peaks appearing above Chame. From Manang the trail is single track and pasture and you push more than you ride. The descent from the pass to Muktinath is steep and loose at the top, rideable for a confident rider lower down. Then the Kali Gandaki: a wide gravel road down the deepest gorge in the world with Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri on either side, and the afternoon wind at your back if you time it right. It is fast, dusty and glorious.

Bikes and support

Every tier includes a mountain bike, sized to you, with helmet, tools and spares. Budget and standard ride hardtails with front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. Luxury rides a full-suspension bike, worth having on the descent from the pass and the Kali Gandaki. Porters carry the bikes from Manang over the pass to Muktinath on every tier, hired locally in Manang because that is where the people who know the pass in snow live. A support jeep follows luxury groups on the road sections, Besisahar to Manang and Muktinath to Beni, and joins any group bigger than eight riders.

Best time

October and November are the best months, clear, dry, the pass usually open, and warm enough in the Kali Gandaki. March to May works too, with more wind and a chance of late snow on the pass. December to February the pass is often closed by snow and we do not run the ride. The monsoon, June to September, makes the lower valley unrideable.

Essential Information

Arrival, welcome and tour start

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will greet you with Khada and arrange your transfer to the hotel. After check-in, you can take time to rest or head out to explore Kathmandu’s busy streets, local markets, and cafés at your own pace.

Later in the day or the following morning, you will meet your mountain biking guide for a detailed tour briefing. This session includes an overview of the Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour, route details, safety guidelines, and bike setup to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Before the tour begins, you will have time to adjust your bike, check gear, and get comfortable with the riding conditions. After breakfast the next day, your Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour officially starts, taking you onto scenic trails, quiet backroads, and hill tracks that offer wide views of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding country.

Accommodation and Meal

When you join our Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour, we handle all on-tour arrangements, including transportation and meals during the riding days, so you can focus on enjoying the ride.

Accommodation in Kathmandu is included in the package. This gives you the flexibility to choose a hotel that matches your comfort level and budget. You are welcome to book on your own, or we can gladly assist with hotel recommendations or reservations if needed.

Meals during the riding days are arranged according to the itinerary. Breakfast is usually taken at your hotel before heading out on the bike. Lunch is enjoyed at local restaurants or small teahouses along the route, giving you the chance to taste authentic Nepali food as well as familiar options. After a day of riding, dinner is typically taken at a local restaurant, offering a relaxed setting to unwind and share the day’s experiences.

The food is fresh and filling, chosen to keep you energised throughout the ride. Drinking water is available during the tour, and your guide will help ensure that meal stops are clean and comfortable throughout the Kathmandu Valley.

Water

Bottled water is available at stops along the route. We carry extra water on the support vehicle for refills during the ride. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle. Stay well hydrated, especially when riding at altitude.

Communication

Mobile coverage varies along the route — it is generally good in towns and valleys but can be patchy in remote mountain areas. We will provide you with a SIM card in Kathmandu and teach you how to get data and recharge. The support vehicle carries communication equipment, and your lead rider maintains contact with the team throughout the ride.

Luggage

Your main luggage will be transported by the support vehicle. You will only need to carry essential items on your bike — rain gear, camera, water bottle, and personal valuables. We recommend packing light and using a small tank bag or backpack for riding. Extra baggage can be stored for free at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Safety and Support

The Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour is meant to be a good mix of adventure, comfort, and safety.  While most rides follow scenic trails and quiet roads around the Kathmandu Valley, some sections include rough tracks and off-road paths that require focus and controlled riding. Our team takes care of all essential arrangements so you can ride with confidence and peace of mind.

You will be guided by an experienced, English-speaking Nepali mountain biking guide who knows the local trails, terrain, and riding conditions well. The guide provides clear instructions, route guidance, and safety tips throughout the tour, for a smooth and enjoyable riding experience for all participants.

Well-maintained mountain bikes and safety gear are used during the tour, suitable for gravel paths, forest trails, and uneven terrain. Our support team remains available throughout the ride to assist with any issues, route adjustments, or unexpected situations.

With professional guidance and local support in place, you can focus on enjoying the natural landscapes, traditional villages, and cultural highlights of the Kathmandu Valley while experiencing an exciting and safe mountain biking adventure.

Why Choose Our Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour Package?

Our Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour offers the right mix of adventure, comfort, and local experience, all handled with care and attention to detail. You ride through the scenic hills and backroads of the Kathmandu Valley, passing terraced farmland, forests, traditional villages, and ancient temples, with wide views of the surrounding mountains. The routes are fun and varied without being overly technical, making the tour suitable for both experienced cyclists and confident beginners.

Everything is well organised so you can focus on enjoying the ride. From route planning and daily support to bike setup and meal stops, our team takes care of the essentials. You ride with an experienced, English-speaking local guide who knows the trails, traffic conditions, and the safest routes around the valley.

Safety always comes first. Our guides set a comfortable pace, give clear instructions, and adjust the ride to suit the group’s ability. There is plenty of time to stop, explore local villages, visit cultural sites, and enjoy Nepali food along the way, rather than rushing from point to point.

How Difficult Is the Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour?

The Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour is a moderately challenging ride, suitable for cyclists with basic to intermediate riding experience. Most of the routes follow quiet backroads, gravel paths, and forest trails around the Kathmandu Valley. While many sections are smooth and enjoyable, there are some uneven trails and short uphill climbs that add variety and adventure to the ride.

Daily cycling distances are comfortable, with regular breaks for rest, meals, and sightseeing. Riders should be prepared for changing trail conditions, light traffic in some areas, and gradual elevation changes. Good balance, basic bike-handling skills, and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended, but no technical mountain biking experience is required.

With an experienced local guide leading the way and support available throughout the tour, the ride is well organised and safe. This makes the Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour an enjoyable option for those looking to explore the valley’s landscapes, culture, and villages by bicycle.

Best Time for the Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour

The best time to join a Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour is during spring and autumn, when the weather is stable and riding conditions are at their best. These seasons offer clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and excellent visibility across the Kathmandu Valley.

Spring, from March to May, brings mild temperatures and blooming landscapes. The trails are dry, the countryside is green, and views of the surrounding hills and mountains are especially beautiful. This season is ideal for riders who enjoy pleasant weather and colourful scenery.

Autumn, from September to November, is another excellent time for mountain biking in Kathmandu. After the monsoon rains, the air is fresh, the trails are clean, and mountain views are clear. Days are warm and dry, making long rides comfortable and enjoyable.

Winter, from December to February, is also possible for cycling, especially for riders who prefer cooler temperatures. While mornings and evenings can be cold, daytime riding is usually pleasant. Higher trails may be chilly, but conditions remain manageable.

The monsoon season, from June to August, is generally not recommended due to heavy rainfall, muddy trails, and reduced visibility. However, experienced riders who do not mind wet conditions may still enjoy short rides during this time.

Important travel information

Travel Essentials

Visa

Most nations may get one when they arrive at Kathmandu Airport. You need a passport that is valid for at least six months, one photo, and a fee (USD 30/50/125 for 15/30/90 days).

Travel insurance

Your coverage must cover medical costs, emergency evacuation from high altitudes up to 2,000 metres, and adventure cycling and hiking. You need proof to get permission.

Currency Exchange

The Nepali Rupee (NPR) is the local currency. ATMs are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and major towns. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants but not at smaller shops or on remote trails.

We recommend carrying cash in NPR for daily expenses. USD, GBP, EUR, and AUD can be exchanged at banks and money changers in Kathmandu.

Personal Expenses

Plan on spending between $25 and $30 a day on extras like bottled water, snacks, hot showers, Wi-Fi, souvenirs, and gratuities for guides and staff.

Flight Delays

Domestic flights in Nepal depend on the weather and can sometimes be delayed or cancelled. If your flight is cancelled, a helicopter is a possible alternative. A helicopter flight usually costs between USD 500 and USD 1,000 per person, depending on weather and group size. We highly recommend adding one or two extra days to your travel plans just in case there are any flight delays.

Trek booking

Personal Trek

Every trek with The Everest Holiday is designed as a private experience. You will not be merged with strangers unless you choose to join a group departure. Your guide, porter, and itinerary are dedicated to you and your group.

Once you confirm, your group trek will be posted on our website, so others can join too.  This is our policy to make every trek into your own personal holiday in the Himalayas.

Trust trek booking

The Everest Holiday is a registered and bonded trekking operator, ensuring a secure booking process. We are proudly members of the Trekking agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Our father's father, Ganesh Prasad Simkhada, has held senior positions in Nepal's tourism and mountaineering institutions (NTB) and former General Secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). To confirm your booking, we require a 10% advance payment. Payment options include the Himalayan bank online portal (on our website), major credit cards, bank transfers, Wise, and Western Union. After your arrival in Kathmandu, you can pay the remaining balance. Please send us your important travel documents, such as a passport copy, within one week of booking. Please make sure your passport has a minimum of 6 months of validation period remaining at your arrival date in Nepal.

Last-minute booking

We recommend booking your trek in advance. However, we also offer a last-minute booking option, which requires full payment 24 hours before departure. For the last-minute booking, please contact Shreejan (Joe) at +977-9810351300 or email us at [email protected]. Please note that last-minute treks may face delays due to circumstances beyond our control.

Our trip schedule is determined by your travel date, and you can make any changes to it. If our scheduled trek dates don't work for you, please let us know, and we will be happy to arrange a trip according to your time and schedule.

Trip Extension

You can easily extend your stay with other adventures. We can arrange exciting activities for you, such as a jungle safari (Chitwan and Bardiya), bungee jumping (Pokhara, Bhote Koshi, and Kushma), rafting (Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Seti rivers), kayaking (Trishuli and Pokhara), paragliding (Pokhara), zip-flying (Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Kushma), and canyoning (Pokhara and Sukute Beach), according to your interests. We can also set up sightseeing tours around the Kathmandu Valley if you're more interested in culture and history.

These tours will take you to UNESCO world heritage sites like Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Changunarayan Temple, and Pashupatinath Temple. We suggest a trip to Nagarkot and Dhulikhel, a hill station just outside of Kathmandu, around sunrise for a serene getaway. We can also set up spiritual trips for Buddhists and Hindus that take you to temples, stupas, monasteries, and meditation centres. When you're booking a trip, please have a look at our ADD-ON package for an amazing adventure during the tour.

Ecotourism practices

We ask that you join our eco-friendly hiking practice because we are very dedicated to keeping the Bagmati region's trails clean. At the start of our excursion, each person will obtain their own eco-waste bag. Please put all of your rubbish that can't be composted, like snack wrappers, plastic bottles, and batteries, in this bag. Don't leave anything on the trail, please. Instead, take this bag with you as we walk down, and our guides will show you where to find the public trash cans and recycling bins where you can throw it away correctly. We need your help to keep the Himalayas clean and lovely for the next generation.

TEH Family

The Everest Holiday is more than a trekking company — it is a family. Founded in 2016 by Shreejan Simkhada and Shamjhana Basukala, the company carries forward three generations of Himalayan expertise. Shreejan’s grandfather, Hari Lal Simkhada, arranged logistics and supported Himalayan expeditions in the 1960s and 1970s. His father, Ganesh Prasad Simkhada, has held senior positions in Nepal’s tourism and mountaineering institutions. When you trek with us, you are joining this family tradition.

Trip conclusion

Farewell Dinner

To celebrate your wonderful achievement, we will have a dinner in Kathmandu to say goodbye. This is a terrific chance for you to share your thoughts and experiences with us. We will also give you a tour achievement award to remember your experience.

Departure

To arrange your airport transfer, please let us know your hotel name, room number, and flight departure details. We will take you from your hotel to Tribhuvan International Airport so you may catch your trip home. We sincerely hope you had an amazing journey and hope to see you again soon for another trip in Nepal.

Tipping culture

Giving a tip is a common method to say thank you for great service. Although they are encouraged at the end of the tour and are best given as a group gift. The quantity of the gratuity should depend on how good the service was, how much the tour cost, and how long it was.
