The trail climbs out of Bhaktapur through terraced mustard fields, and when you look up from the handlebars, there they are. The entire Himalayan range, from Langtang in the west to Everest in the east, stretched across the horizon like a wall of white. You stop pedalling. Everyone does, the first time. The air up here on the valley rim is cooler and cleaner than anything in Kathmandu, and the only sound is wind through the prayer flags at the next ridgeline. Then your guide points to a trail dropping through oak forest toward a village you can't see yet, and you remember why you came. Five days of this. Five days of riding through a landscape most visitors only see from a taxi window.
This short cycling tour loops through the Kathmandu Valley's best-kept secrets: the medieval streets of Bhaktapur, the Himalayan viewpoint of Nagarkot, the ridgeline town of Dhulikhel, and the quiet farming villages in between where life moves at the pace of the seasons. The riding is gentle enough for casual cyclists but interesting enough to keep experienced riders engaged. And because you're never more than 30 km from Kathmandu, you get the adventure without the remoteness. If you only have five days in Nepal and want to see more than temples, this is how you do it.
What Makes This Tour Unforgettable
- Wake up in Nagarkot to a sunrise that reveals the Himalayan range from Langtang to Everest, one of the most accessible high-mountain panoramas in Nepal.
- Ride through Bhaktapur, the best-preserved medieval city in the Kathmandu Valley, where 15th-century pagodas and pottery squares still function as they did five hundred years ago.
- Cycle the ridgeline from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel, a rolling trail through forests and farming villages with Himalayan views on one side and the valley floor on the other.
- Visit Kathmandu's cultural highlights by bike, seeing the city from a perspective that walking tours and bus tours simply cannot match.
- All bikes, helmets, and gear are provided and inspected before departure. A support vehicle carries your luggage and is available if you need a break from the saddle at any point.
- Ride with a local cycling guide who knows every back road, every shortcut through the rice paddies, and every viewpoint worth stopping for. They handle navigation so you can focus on the ride and the scenery.
- No serious cycling experience required. Daily distances are short (20-40 km), the terrain is rolling rather than steep, and the support vehicle is always available if any section feels too much.
- Perfect as a standalone short trip or as an add-on before or after a longer trek. Many of our cyclists combine this with an Everest or Annapurna trek.
5-Day Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour Overview
The Kathmandu Valley is ringed by forested hills that rise to around 2,100 m. Between these hills and the valley floor lies a patchwork of terraced fields, brick villages, and ancient trade routes that were old before Kathmandu was a city. For cyclists, this is ideal terrain: varied enough to be interesting, gentle enough to be enjoyable, and packed with cultural sites that give you a reason to stop, explore, and learn.
The tour loops through the eastern side of the valley, where the density of UNESCO-listed heritage sites, viewpoints, and traditional villages is highest. You'll ride from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur, climb to Nagarkot for the sunset and sunrise, ride the ridgeline to Dhulikhel, and return to Kathmandu through the valley's quieter back roads. Each day brings a different landscape and a different piece of Nepali culture.
Before You Arrive
We recommend arriving in Kathmandu by 4:00 pm the day before departure. This gives you time for a bike fitting, saddle adjustment, and a brief safety briefing with your guide.
Your Online Briefing
After you book, we'll send you an email with available times for a video call. This is your chance to discuss cycling experience, fitness level, and any concerns. We'll go through the route day by day, ask about dietary needs, and answer every question. If you have your own pedals or saddle you'd like to bring, let us know and we'll fit them to your bike.
Your Tour, Your Way
This is a private tour. Your group rides with your own guide, at your own pace. We'll never add strangers to your group. Want to spend longer exploring Bhaktapur's pottery squares? Prefer an extra loop through a particular village? We adjust everything. The support vehicle means you can ride as much or as little as you choose on any given day.

Your Ride, Our Family
Cycling the Kathmandu Valley is something our team does on weekends for fun. These trails — through Bhaktapur's brick lanes, up to Nagarkot's sunrise ridge, along the rice terraces of Panauti — are our neighbourhood. We designed this tour from personal experience, not from a guidebook.
Shreejan and Sam founded The Everest Holiday in 2016, continuing a family connection to Himalayan tourism that stretches back to the 1960s. Every booking is personal. Every guest is family.
Why Cyclists Trust Us
The Kathmandu Valley is our backyard. We know trails that don't appear on any map — farm tracks between Bhaktapur and Nagarkot, ridge paths above Kirtipur, quiet lanes through Panauti's medieval core. This isn't a generic cycling tour. It's a local's tour on wheels.
Everything taken care of. Bike, helmet, guide, support vehicle, accommodation, entrance fees — all included. You bring your enthusiasm and we handle the rest.
Family-run, government registered, TAAN certified. 320+ reviews. When you ride with us, you ride with people who care.
Solo Travellers Welcome
Short on time and travelling alone? This tour is ideal for solo cyclists. You can book it as a private ride for yourself, or let us know and we'll list your date as a fixed departure so other solo riders can join you. Group size ranges from 1 to 20 cyclists, and the relaxed pace means everyone finds their rhythm quickly.
Many of our solo cyclists tell us this tour is the highlight of a longer Nepal trip. It's short enough to fit into almost any schedule but deep enough that you'll see a side of the Kathmandu Valley that most visitors never discover.
Difficulty: Easy (1 out of 5)
This is a gentle, accessible cycling tour suitable for casual riders. The terrain is rolling, with one moderate climb to Nagarkot (approximately 2,100 m) that can be shortened with vehicle support if needed. Daily riding distances are short (20-40 km), and the trails are a mix of quiet village roads, farm tracks, and paved roads. Maximum altitude is 2,100 m, so there are no altitude-related concerns. You don't need to be a serious cyclist. If you can ride a bike comfortably for 3-4 hours with breaks, you'll enjoy this tour. The support vehicle is always nearby if any section feels too challenging.
Trek With a Purpose — Changing Lives, One Pedal Stroke at a Time
In 2019, Shreejan Simkhada and Shamjhana Basukala founded the Nagarjun Learning Center to give back to the communities that shaped their family. Today, 70 children receive free education and hot meals daily at the flagship centre in Saldum Village, Dhading District. The centre has expanded to 7 locations across Nepal, provided free medical care to over 600 people, and brought internet access to 65 children for the first time in their village's history.
A portion of every booking with The Everest Holiday supports the Nagarjun Learning Center, which is verified and listed on the UN Partner Portal. When you cycle through the Kathmandu Valley, every pedal stroke helps change a life.
