The bells begin before dusk. First one, then dozens, then hundreds, ringing from every corner of the Pashupatinath Temple complex until the sound becomes a single continuous tone that vibrates in your chest. The ghats along the Bagmati River glow with sacred flames. Ash-smeared Naga Sadhus sit motionless in meditation, their tridents planted in the earth beside them. Somewhere in the crowd, a million voices chant Om Namah Shivaya in unison, and the sound rises into the February night like something older than language. This is Maha Shivaratri — the Great Night of Lord Shiva — and you're standing at its spiritual epicentre, Kathmandu's ancient Pashupatinath Temple.

This two-day guided experience takes you inside one of Nepal's most powerful festivals. You won't watch from the edges. With your bilingual guide explaining every ritual, every offering, and every tradition, you'll participate in the all-night vigil, witness the Rudra Abhishek ceremony, walk among the Sadhus who've journeyed from across the subcontinent, and feel the full force of a gathering that draws millions of devotees to a single sacred site. It's not tourism. It's immersion. And for those willing to stay awake through the night, it's one of the most unforgettable cultural experiences on earth.

What Makes This Experience Unforgettable

  • Join the sacred all-night vigil (Jaagran) at Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the holiest Shiva temple in the world, during Maha Shivaratri — the Great Night of Lord Shiva.
  • Participate in the Rudra Abhishek ceremony with guided offerings of milk, water, and Bael leaves — the ancient rituals that have been performed here for centuries.
  • Witness and interact with Naga Sadhus, the ascetic holy men who travel from across India and Nepal for this night, performing intense spiritual rites beside the sacred fires.
  • Experience the overwhelming power of a million voices chanting Om Namah Shivaya in unison along the ghats of the Bagmati River, with sacred flames reflected in the water.
  • Your bilingual guide (English and Hindi) explains every ritual, every symbol, and every tradition in real time, so you understand the meaning behind what you're witnessing.
  • Group camp setup at Pashupatinath so you have a base during the all-night celebrations — a practical detail that makes the long night far more comfortable.
  • All entrance fees, vegetarian meals, and local transport included in a single, straightforward price — no hidden costs, no surprises.
  • Small group format means your guide can answer questions, cross the crowds safely, and make sure you don't miss the key moments of the night.

2-Day Maha Shivaratri Experience Overview

This is a festival experience, not a trek, and it runs to the rhythm of the celebrations rather than a fixed walking schedule. On the first day, your guide collects you from your hotel and takes you to Pashupatinath Temple, where you'll receive a full briefing on the site's history, the festival's significance, and the rituals you'll witness. The atmosphere builds throughout the afternoon as devotees arrive from across Nepal and India, the temple drums begin, and the preparations for the night's ceremonies take shape.

As evening falls, the energy shifts. The Rudra Abhishek ceremony begins, sacred fires are lit along the ghats, and the Naga Sadhus take their positions. Your guide leads you through the all-night vigil, explaining each phase of the rituals and making sure you're positioned to see and experience the most significant moments. A group camp provides a base where you can rest, eat, and warm up during quieter intervals.

The following morning, after the final rituals and a late breakfast, you'll have time to absorb the post-festival calm at Pashupatinath before your guide returns you to your hotel. Vegetarian meals (satvik food, appropriate for the festival) are included throughout.

Before You Arrive

We recommend arriving in Kathmandu by 4:00 pm on 13 February 2027. This gives you time to rest, meet your guide, and prepare for the intense experience ahead. The all-night vigil demands stamina — an early night beforehand is strongly recommended.

What to Expect

This is a festival with millions of participants. Expect large crowds, noise, smoke from sacred fires, and the energy of a massive religious gathering. Your guide will keep you safe, positioned well, and informed at all times. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — and wear comfortable shoes. Read our guide to Nepal's cultural etiquette before you go. February nights in Kathmandu can be cold, so bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves for the outdoor vigil. Leave valuables at your hotel.

Your Tour, Our Family

When Hari Lal Simkhada helped international travellers experience the Himalayas in the 1960s, he could not have imagined his grandson would be guiding spiritual seekers through Nepal's most sacred festivals six decades later. His son, Ganesh Prasad Simkhada, went on to hold senior positions in Nepal's tourism and mountaineering institutions. Today, Shreejan Simkhada carries that legacy forward as CEO of The Everest Holiday, personally designing every itinerary and hand-picking the guide for your group.

For this Maha Shivaratri experience, your guide will be one of our cultural specialists with deep knowledge of Hindu traditions and temple etiquette. Shreejan briefs every guide personally before your experience begins.

Why Festival-Goers Trust Us

We celebrate Shivaratri ourselves. This isn't a tour we invented for tourists — Maha Shivaratri is our festival too. Our team knows the rituals, the timings, the best vantage points, and the etiquette. You won't just watch. You'll understand.

Access and safety. Pashupatinath draws hundreds of thousands during Shivaratri. We cross the crowds, secure the best spots, and ensure you experience the festival without the chaos.

320+ reviews. Family-run since 2016. TAAN certified. When you join us for Shivaratri, you join a family that has celebrated it for generations.

Solo Travellers Welcome

Attending a festival alone can feel overwhelming, especially one this large. That's exactly why a guided experience makes sense. You'll have a knowledgeable guide by your side all night, explaining what's happening and keeping you safe in the crowds. Group size ranges from 1 to 20, and the shared intensity of the all-night vigil creates bonds quickly.

Many of our solo travellers tell us that experiencing Maha Shivaratri together — the cold, the chanting, the sacred fires, the exhaustion, and the dawn — is the kind of thing that turns strangers into friends by morning.

Difficulty: Easy (1 out of 5)

This is a cultural festival experience, not a trek. There's no hiking, no altitude, and no physical fitness requirement. The main challenge is the all-night vigil: staying awake and on your feet (with rest breaks at the group camp) from evening through to the early hours. February nights in Kathmandu can drop to 3-5 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing is essential. The temple complex involves walking on stone paths and steps, and the crowds can be dense. Comfortable shoes, patience, and a willingness to lose yourself in the experience are all you need.

Trek With a Purpose — Changing Lives, One Step at a Time

In 2019, Shreejan Simkhada and Shamjhana Basukala founded the Nagarjun Learning Center to give back to the communities that shaped their family. Today, 70 children receive free education and hot meals daily at the flagship centre in Saldum Village, Dhading District. The centre has expanded to 7 locations across Nepal, provided free medical care to over 600 people, and brought internet access to 65 children for the first time in their village's history.

A portion of every booking with The Everest Holiday supports the Nagarjun Learning Center, which is verified and listed on the UN Partner Portal. When you join us for Maha Shivaratri, every step helps change a life.

  • You will need a passport that is valid for at least six months, a recent passport-sized photo, and the completed arrival form.

  • Visa fees (in cash in USD) are about $30 for 15 days or $50 for 30 days. For a simpler operation, please make sure you have the correct amount in crisp notes.

Travel Insurance is Required

You must have full travel insurance to book this pilgrimage.

  • Your coverage must clearly cover emergency medical evacuation, hospitalization, trip cancellation or interruption, and lost luggage.

  • Make sure your coverage is good enough for this excursion, which will include large crowds, an all-night outdoor vigil, and general travel. After you book, please send us a copy of your insurance policy.

The Best Time to Go and the Dates of the Festival

  • Dates for the festival: This package is only good for February 2027.

  • Weather: February in Kathmandu is usually nice, with clear skies, but nights may be rather cold, especially during the all-night vigil. It is very important to pack warm clothes, such as a jacket, hat, and gloves.

Money and currency

The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the currency in Nepal.

  • Cash is King: There are ATMs in Kathmandu, but you need cash to buy anything at the festival and in the temple. When you get to the airport or Thamel, we suggest that you exchange enough money.

  • Small Denominations: Bring small NPR notes for personal costs, contributions, tips, and offerings at the temple (for flowers, milk, etc.).

  • The package already includes all planned meals, transportation, and guided services.

  • Safety, health, and how to act on a pilgrimage

  • Vaccinations: It is best to stay up-to-date on all of your normal immunizations. Talk to your doctor before going to Nepal.

  • Temple Etiquette: Your guide will give you a full tour. When you go to the temple, remember to dress modestly (with your shoulders and legs covered), take off your shoes before going inside the sanctum, and be courteous throughout the rites. In some interior locations, photography may not be allowed.

  • There are millions of people at Maha Shivaratri. Stay with your group, monitor your belongings, and adhere to the guide's instructions for meeting points.

  • Food and drink: Only drink bottled or purified water. The meals that will be served will be basic, vegetarian (satvik), and good for people who are fasting throughout the festival.

Making a reservation with The Everest Holiday

The Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) has licensed and bonded The Everest Holiday as a tour operator.

FAQs

Q.1. What are the package dates, and when is Maha Shivaratri 2026?

Maha Shivaratri in 2026 will start on the night of February 14 and last until February 15. Our thoughtfully scheduled 2-day pilgrimage tour runs from February 14 to February 15, 2026, which is the perfect period for you to see all of the key rites and the sacred celebration at Pashupatinath Temple.

Q.2. What is the best part of this Maha Shivaratri package?

The best part is participating in the sacred all-night vigil (Jaagran) at Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with millions of other devotees. You will also take part in the Rudra Abhishek ceremony, where you will see the Shiva Lingam being anointed while tremendous voices of "Om Namah Shivaya" fill the air.

Q.3. Is this package good for someone who doesn't know much about Hindu rituals?

Yes, for sure. This is for people who are already religious and others who are looking for spirituality. A spiritual guide who speaks both English and Hindi will give you a full introduction to Hindu customs, ceremonies, and how to behave in a temple. They will walk you through each stage, making the experience deep and easy to understand.

Q.4. Will I be able to view the Naga Sadhus, who are holy men who live in the woods?

Yes, the gathering of Naga Sadhus is a special part of Maha Shivaratri at Pashupatinath. Your guide will take you to places where you can politely watch and talk to them (with permission, you may be able to take pictures), giving you a rare look into their deep spiritual practices.

Q.5. What do you get when you take part in the "Rudra Abhishek" ceremony?

You will join a special session where you can participate in the ritual anointing (Abhishek) of the Shiva Lingam with help. This usually includes giving milk, water, honey, and Bael leaves, which are all included in the box, making it a very personal spiritual occasion.

Q.6. What do I need to do to get a visa and enter Nepal for this trip?

Everyone who is not an Indian citizen needs a visa. A Tourist Visa on Arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is the easiest way. You will need a passport that is good for at least six months, one photo, and the fee in cash (USD) ($30 for 15 days). We can help you with the details when you book.

Q.7. Is it necessary to have travel insurance, and what should it cover?

Yes, you need to have full travel insurance. Your coverage must clearly cover medical evacuation in an emergency, hospitalization, vacation cancellation, and events with a lot of people and an all-night vigil outside. After you book, please show evidence of insurance.

Q.8. What should I bring to the all-night vigil at Pashupatinath in February?

You need warm clothes. Kathmandu nights in February are frigid. Bring a heavy coat, a hat, gloves, and warm socks. Also, it is a good idea to wear comfortable shoes for standing, bring a reusable water bottle, and dress modestly (with shoulders and knees covered) to go into the temple.

Q.9. Is food included, and what kind of food is served during the fast?

Yes, all meals are provided. We provide dinner on Day 1 and breakfast and lunch on Day 2. The cuisine will be simple, vegetarian (satvik), and good for people who are fasting for Maha Shivaratri. It is meant to help you get through the spiritual exercises without breaching the rules of the fast.

Q.10. How does the package deal with the huge crowds at Pashupatinath?

We make sure that everything is organized and safe. We have a special guide to help you find your way through the crowds, find a safe place for the vigil, and set up clear meeting spots. This lets you securely become immersed in the energy.

Q.11. Is it possible for me to book this package as a single traveler?

Yes, those traveling alone are welcome. You will be with other pilgrims. The structured guidance and group setting make this hectic festival safe and supportive for anyone who is going alone.

Q.12.  How do you pay for and schedule a trip with The Everest Holiday?

To get a spot at this popular festival, you need to pay a non-refundable deposit. You can pay the rest of the money when you get to Kathmandu. You need to send in a copy of your passport and travel insurance after you book. We are a licensed TAAN operator, which means you can trust us to handle your transaction.

Q.13. Does the price include picking up and dropping off at the airport?

Yes, the package covers collection at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) on February 14 and drop-off on February 15. Please send us your flight information ahead of time so that we can coordinate smoothly.

Q.14. What do I do if my flight is late and I miss part of the trip?

If you can, we strongly suggest arriving a day early because the festival program is set. But our local team will help latecomers get to the event grounds as quickly as possible. This shows why trip delay insurance is necessary.
