Kathmandu-Pokhara-Chitwan Golden Triangle: Complete Cost Guide 2026

Updated on May 02, 2026

The Kathmandu-Pokhara-Chitwan triangle is Nepal's most popular touring route, and for good reason. It combines the cultural depth of Kathmandu's seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the adventure playground of Pokhara's lakeside and mountain views, and the wildlife of Chitwan National Park into a single loop that takes seven to ten days depending on your pace.

It is also one of the most frequently mispriced trips on the internet. Some operators quote 300 USD for a budget version that cuts every corner. Others charge 3,000 USD for essentially the same itinerary with premium hotels. Here is what it actually costs in 2026, broken down honestly so you know what you are paying for.

April 2026 price note: Nepal's fuel costs have risen sharply due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Transport between cities (bus, private car, domestic flights) has increased. Prices below reflect current 2026 rates.

The Route

The golden triangle can be done in either direction. Most people go:

Kathmandu → Chitwan → Pokhara → Kathmandu

This direction makes sense logistically: you descend from Kathmandu (1,400m) to Chitwan (150m, subtropical), then climb to Pokhara (800m, lakeside), and return to Kathmandu by flight or drive. The landscape changes dramatically at each stop, keeping the trip fresh.

LegDistanceDrive TimeFlight
Kathmandu to Chitwan150 km5-6 hoursNo direct flight
Chitwan to Pokhara175 km6-7 hoursNo direct flight
Pokhara to Kathmandu200 km6-7 hours25 min, 120-180 USD

Total driving: roughly 17 to 20 hours across three legs. Most people fly the Pokhara-Kathmandu leg to save half a day and get the aerial mountain views. Read our Kathmandu to Pokhara transport guide for options on that leg.

Tourist buses are cheap but slow (six to seven hours per leg with basic seats). Private cars cost more but leave when you want, stop when you want, and arrive faster. The Pokhara-Kathmandu flight is worth the cost for the time saved and the mountain views alone.

Accommodation

CityBudget (per night)Mid-RangePremium
Kathmandu (Thamel)15-25 USD40-70 USD100-200 USD
Chitwan (Sauraha lodge)15-30 USD40-80 USD100-250 USD
Pokhara (Lakeside)15-30 USD35-70 USD80-200 USD

Most golden triangle trips involve two nights in Kathmandu, two nights in Chitwan, and two nights in Pokhara (six nights total). Total accommodation cost: 90 to 180 USD (budget), 230 to 440 USD (mid-range), 560 to 1,300 USD (premium).

Many Chitwan lodges include meals and safari activities in their room rate, making them better value than the nightly price suggests. A mid-range lodge at 60 USD per night that includes three meals and a full-day safari package is effectively 60 USD for everything, not just the room.

Activities

Kathmandu sightseeing (1 full day):

  • Entry fees (Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, Durbar Square, Swayambhunath): 2,000-3,000 NPR total (13-20 USD)
  • Local guide (full day): 25-40 USD
  • Transport between sites: 15-30 USD (taxi) or included if you have a private car

Chitwan safari (1-2 days):

  • National park entry: 2,000 NPR (13 USD) per day
  • Jeep safari: 25-40 USD
  • Canoe ride: 10-15 USD
  • Nature walk: 10-15 USD
  • Full-day package at most lodges: 50-80 USD including lunch

Pokhara activities (1-2 days):

  • Sarangkot sunrise transport: 15-25 USD
  • Phewa Lake boating: 5-10 USD per hour
  • Paragliding: 70-100 USD
  • Davis Falls + Gupteshwor Cave: 200 NPR total
  • International Mountain Museum: 500 NPR
  • World Peace Pagoda: free (walk or taxi 10-15 USD)

Food

Daily food costs depend heavily on where and what you eat:

  • Budget: 10-15 USD per day (local restaurants, dal bhat, momos, tea stalls)
  • Mid-range: 20-30 USD per day (tourist restaurants, varied cuisine)
  • Premium: 35-60 USD per day (fine dining, international cuisine, drinks)

Chitwan lodge stays that include meals eliminate food costs for those days. Pokhara's lakeside has excellent restaurants at reasonable prices. Kathmandu's Thamel has everything from 2 USD dal bhat to 20 USD steaks.

Adding a Trek to the Golden Triangle

The golden triangle works perfectly as the foundation for a longer trip that includes trekking:

  • Add Poon Hill trek (4-5 days): Start the trek from Pokhara, return to Pokhara, then fly to Kathmandu. Total trip: 12-13 days. Read our 10-day combined itinerary for a detailed plan.
  • Add Annapurna Base Camp (9 days): The ultimate Nepal first-timer trip. Kathmandu + Chitwan + ABC + Pokhara in 16-17 days.
  • Add Everest Base Camp (12 days): Do the golden triangle first, then fly to Lukla for EBC. Total trip: 20-21 days. Requires more time but covers everything Nepal offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the golden triangle worth it without trekking?

Absolutely. The temples of Kathmandu, the wildlife of Chitwan, and the mountain views of Pokhara are three completely different experiences that justify a trip to Nepal even if you never put on hiking boots.

Which direction should I travel?

Kathmandu → Chitwan → Pokhara → Kathmandu (or fly from Pokhara). This direction descends to the hot lowlands first, then climbs to the cool lakeside, which feels more comfortable than the reverse. If you are adding a trek from Pokhara, this direction puts the trek at the end when you are most adjusted to Nepal.

Can I do it in less than seven days?

Five days is the absolute minimum: one day Kathmandu, one day Chitwan, one day Pokhara, two days driving. It is rushed and tiring. Seven to eight days is the comfortable pace. Ten days if you want to add a short trek.

Is it suitable for elderly travellers or families with young children?

Yes. The golden triangle involves no trekking (unless you add one), no altitude, and no physical demands beyond walking around temple complexes and sitting in a jeep. We arrange comfortable private transport with stops as needed. The Chitwan safari is exciting for children and the Pokhara boating is relaxing for everyone.

What about the road conditions?

The Kathmandu-Chitwan road (Prithvi Highway to Mugling, then south) is paved and in reasonable condition. The Chitwan-Pokhara road (Siddhartha Highway) is more winding but also paved. Both routes pass through beautiful scenery. The Prithvi Highway has been under widening works since 2024, causing occasional delays.
