Why I built it this way

Many people tell me they want Everest Base Camp but also something soft at the end: green, warm, easy on the legs. This trip does that. You walk to Everest Base Camp and up Kala Patthar in the classic way, then take a flight and a drive to Chitwan National Park for two nights of rhinos, birds and jungle. I put the jungle after the mountain on purpose. After eleven days of cold, thin air, the Terai feels like a gift.

The EBC part is our standard route, the same as our Everest Base Camp day-by-day guide, with one change: a spare day at Lukla, so a delayed flight does not eat into the Chitwan days. You sleep at Gorak Shep, 5,164 m, on day 8, and stand on Kala Patthar at 5,545 m on day 9. That is a serious altitude, so read How Hard Is Everest Base Camp? What Nobody Tells You Until You Are Already There and EBC Altitude Profile: Where Trekkers Struggle and Why before you book.

We do not sell animal rides. Our Chitwan days are a jeep, a dugout canoe, a walk with a naturalist, Tharu culture and birds. If you would like to add a day of white-water rafting on the Trishuli, ask me and I will price it as an extra.

Hotel nights in Kathmandu are not included, so you choose your own (our family homestay is USD 15 per person per night). Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum. The Everest Holiday is a family company founded in 2016, from three generations of guiding in the Himalayas.

Best time to go, month by month

Rain and temperatures on the trail are published station averages from our Everest weather guide. The Chitwan notes come from our Chitwan seasonal guide. Neither is a forecast.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
JanuaryColdest month on the trail. Dingboche lows near -15 C (modelled), some high lodges shut. Chitwan is cool with foggy mornings.Only if cold and quiet are the point
FebruarySame cold as January. Dingboche lows near -14 C (modelled). Chitwan is cool, with good rhino sightings.Only if cold and quiet are the point
MarchCold early, warming. The spring season begins. Chitwan is getting hot.Good, with a warm sleeping bag
AprilWarm days, rhododendrons below Namche, strong views, busy. Chitwan can reach 35 to 40 C.Good, hot in Chitwan
MayWarmest trekking month, hazier afternoons, rain building at Lukla (127.6 mm). Chitwan is hot.Not my first choice for Chitwan
JuneMonsoon. Lukla gets 324.8 mm, flights are unreliable and Chitwan has floods. No
JulyMonsoon. Lukla gets 529.8 mm.No
AugustWettest month. Lukla gets 641.8 mm.No
SeptemberThe monsoon is clearing but Lukla still gets 419.0 mm.Late September only, with spare days
OctoberThe first properly dry month, the busiest on the trail. Chitwan is lush and clear at 25 to 30 C. The last week can bring a late storm.Best, with November
NovemberAlmost no rain, clear and colder. Dingboche lows near -11 C (modelled). Quieter as the month goes on. Peak season in Chitwan.Best, with October
DecemberDry and very cold on the trail. Early December is the gentlest. Chitwan is cool, with near-certain rhino sightings.Good, if you pack for it

Chitwan is best from October to March and the Everest trail is best in October, November, March and April, so October, November and March are the months that suit both. One price applies all year. See also Best Time to Trek to Everest Base Camp in 2026/2027: An Honest Month-by-Month Guide.

You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card, and card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge.

Getting there and getting back

You fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, a flight of about 40 minutes. Between roughly 15 March and 15 May and 25 September and 30 November the flights may leave from Manthali instead, and we include the road transfer. Luxury flies to Lukla and back by helicopter, on a shared seat. Read our Is the Lukla Flight Safe? An Honest Answer from Someone Who Flies It and Manthali (Ramechhap) Airport: Where Your Lukla Flight Leaves From in Peak Season before you choose your dates.

After the trek you fly back to Kathmandu, sleep in your own hotel, and drive to Chitwan the next morning, five to six hours by private vehicle. The last day is the drive back, arriving in the afternoon. Keep at least one spare day before your international flight. Visa on arrival is USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Safety and altitude

This trek goes higher than most people have been. You sleep at Gorak Shep (5,164 m) on day 8 and climb to 5,545 m on day 9. Your guide checks your oxygen level and how you feel every day with a pulse oximeter. If you are not acclimatising, we do not go higher. The Himalayan Rescue Association aid post at Pheriche is a few hours from the main trail. Buy travel insurance at home that covers trekking to 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation.

On the safari you follow your naturalist, keep to the jeep and the canoe and never walk into the forest alone. Wildlife is wild, and no sighting is guaranteed.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Fitness: trail days are 5 to 8 hours at altitude. Start training 12 weeks ahead, and read How to Train for Everest Base Camp: The Programme That Actually Works.
  • Altitude: you sleep as high as Gorak Shep at 5,164 m. Your guide checks your oxygen level every day. If you are not acclimatising, we do not go higher.
  • Wildlife: sightings are never guaranteed, and tigers are rarely seen. The rhinoceros is common on a jeep safari.
  • Best months: October and November, then March to April. December to February is very cold on the trail, and the monsoon brings flight delays and floods.
  • Permits: we apply for them, so we need your passport details early.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover trekking to 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
  • Spare days: the itinerary has a spare day at Lukla, and we suggest one more before your international flight.
  • Hotels: Chitwan lodge nights are included. Kathmandu hotel nights are not. We can book them for you, or you can stay at our family homestay (USD 15 per person per night), which supports the learning centre.
  • Documents: bring your passport.

FAQs

The trek is the hard part. Trail days are 5 to 8 hours at altitude, you sleep at Gorak Shep (5,164 m) on day 8 and climb Kala Patthar (5,545 m) on day 9. The Chitwan days are flat and easy. You need good fitness, and no technical skill.
For a couple, the price per person is USD 2,605 Budget, USD 3,470 Standard and USD 6,255 Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 4,090, USD 4,905 and USD 9,610. The price falls for larger groups, down to USD 1,895, USD 2,850 and USD 5,895 for 13 to 20 guests. Every permit and the Chitwan lodge nights are inside.
Because the Lukla flight is the weak link. A spare day sits at Lukla, so a delayed flight does not eat into the safari, and after eleven days of cold, thin air the warm lowlands are a gift.
You go on a jeep safari in the national park, a guided jungle walk at the forest edge, a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti river and a Tharu cultural evening, and you look for birds at every stage. It is two nights and one full day beside the park.
Rhinoceros sightings are common on a jeep safari, but no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed. Tigers live in the park and are rarely seen. We offer no animal rides of any kind.
A licensed guide is included for the whole trip, and a naturalist leads the Chitwan activities. Porters depend on the tier: none on Budget, one for every two trekkers on Standard (a solo guest has none, and the guide carries up to 10 kg), and one per trekker on Luxury.
Flights are often delayed, so we build in a spare day at Lukla, and the busy weeks fly from Manthali. If the flight is delayed on the way in, we adjust the first days. Keep at least one more spare day before your international flight.
It is safe when it is run slowly, and this route is. Your guide checks your oxygen level every day, and we do not go higher if you are not acclimatising. You need insurance that covers trekking to 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation. On the safari you follow your naturalist at all times.
October and November are the clearest months for both the trail and Chitwan. March and April are warm on the trail but Chitwan can reach 35 to 40 C. December to February is very cold on the trail. See the month-by-month table on this page.
About five to six hours each way, with stops. The road follows the Trishuli river, and you drive it on day 14 and again on day 16.
Two Chitwan lodge nights are included, matched to your tier. Kathmandu hotel nights are not, so you can choose your own. We can book them, or you can stay at our family homestay for USD 15 per person per night.
Yes. White-water rafting on the Trishuli river is a separate day tour of ours. Ask us and we will price it as an extra for your dates.
You pay a 10% deposit to book and the balance in Kathmandu before the trip. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash in Kathmandu carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf, or move you to another date. If you cancel yourself, the deposit is not refundable, but you can reschedule free to any date within one year with at least 72 hours' notice.
Yes. Buy travel insurance at home, before you travel, and check that it covers trekking to 5,500 m, domestic road travel and helicopter evacuation. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.
