Best Time for the Rara Lake Trek: Month by Month for 2027
Updated 23 October 2026.
Short answer: The best months for Rara Lake are September to November and March to May. October is the one I would book first: the monsoon has gone, the air is clear and November is the driest month in the weather table I found (8.5 mm). December to February is cold and snowy, and one source lists the lake as frozen from December to March, while others say it never freezes. June to August is wet, and flights and the Karnali Highway both suffer. The lake is at 2,990 m. Our 10-day trek that flies to Talcha costs USD 2,290 Budget, USD 2,835 Standard and USD 3,615 Luxury per person for two to four people, and the 12-day trek by road costs USD 1,010, USD 1,715 and USD 5,110.
I am Shreejan. People write to ask me "when is Rara Lake best?" and then add a second question: "can we see it frozen?" or "is October too busy?" This page answers both, month by month, and where the sources I checked disagree with each other, I say so.
Rara Lake at a glance

| Size | About 10.8 sq km, maximum depth 167 m | Nepal Traveller |
| Park height range | 2,800 m to 4,039 m (Chuchemara peak) | Nepal Traveller |
| Highest point on our trips | Ghorasinga, 3,050 m | Our trip pages |
| Yearly rain | About 885 mm, mostly June to September | Wikipedia climate table (FAO and JICA data, 3,048 m) |

What does the weather actually do at Rara?
Most "best time" pages are written from opinion. I wanted at least one set of measured numbers, so I used the Wikipedia climate table for the lake, which cites FAO and JICA data for a station at 3,048 m. That is about 58 m above the water, so it is a good match. It is an old long-term average, not a forecast, and a given year can be warmer, colder or wetter.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | My reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7.5 C | -2.3 C | 31 mm | Cold, snow likely |
| February | 9.3 C | -1.5 C | 43 mm | Cold, snow likely |
| March | 13.6 C | 2.9 C | 50 mm | Snow melting, good |
| April | 18.8 C | 3.7 C | 43 mm | Very good |
| May | 21.0 C | 6.0 C | 70 mm | Good, warm |
| June | 21.6 C | 9.5 C | 82 mm | Rain building, I avoid |
| July | 18.7 C | 10.3 C | 192 mm | Monsoon, I avoid |
| August | 18.6 C | 10.1 C | 208 mm | Monsoon, I avoid |
| September | 18.1 C | 8.5 C | 106 mm | Drying out, late month is fine |
| October | 15.8 C | 4.0 C | 30 mm | Best |
| November | 10.1 C | 0.2 C | 9 mm | Very dry, cold nights |
| December | 8.0 C | -1.5 C | 22 mm | Cold, snow possible |
July and August together bring about 400 mm of the 885 mm a year. Add June and September and you have two thirds of the year's rain in four months. That is the whole case against going in the monsoon, in numbers.
The sources do not agree on temperature. A month-by-month guide from Ambition Himalaya gives January as -5 C to 8 C, which is wider than the Wikipedia averages because it describes extremes, not means. Shikhar Adventure says winter days are 0 C to 10 C and nights fall below -5 C. Our own trip page says autumn nights can reach about -6 C, while the table above shows an October average low of 4.0 C. I read that as: October and November nights can drop below zero on a clear night, but the average night is above freezing in October. Pack for -5 C either way.
Month by month: what I would tell a guest
March and April
Snow is melting and the trail is mostly clear by the end of March, according to Shikhar Adventure. Ambition Himalaya says rhododendrons start to flower in March and are in bloom in April. Nepal Traveller lists rhododendron among the trees below 3,200 m in the park, so you walk through them. The average high in April is 18.8 C, which is easy walking weather.
May
Warm days, average high 21.0 C, and the monsoon has not started. Ambition Himalaya mentions brief showers late in the month. Hop Nepal and Shikhar Adventure both put the rhododendron season at March to May, so you may still see flowers early in the month. It is a good time, a little hazier than autumn.
June to August
I avoid Rara in these months. Rain is heavy from July, and Shikhar Adventure lists slippery roads, flight delays and leeches. Our own pages say the same about leeches. If you must go in June, the table shows it as the driest of the four wet months, but I would still keep spare days.
September
Rain drops from 208 mm in August to 106 mm. It is the shoulder of the season. Our trip pages list September to November as the autumn window, and I would pick the later part of the month over the first days.
October
This is the month most guides pick and I agree. Rain is 30 mm and the average high is 15.8 C. Two things to plan for. First, it is the busiest month. Shikhar Adventure says so, and a 13 November 2020 Online Khabar report from Sinja said local visitors rose during Dashain and Tihar. Second, lodges are simple and few, so book early. Rara still sees far fewer trekkers than Everest or Annapurna, and my own 10-day page puts it at about a tenth of the traffic. I would not call October crowded by any normal standard, but it is when you will actually meet other people.
November
The driest month at 8.5 mm. The average high falls to 10.1 C and the average low is 0.2 C, so nights are properly cold. I like November for the quiet and the clear air, but bring a warm sleeping bag. Our trip page says the autumn season runs September to November.
December to February
Wikipedia says that from December to March the temperature is below freezing and heavy snow blocks the way to the lake. Hop Nepal says snow covers the passes in December, January and February. Our own trip page notes that some lodges shut in winter. I would want a long talk with you before booking a winter trip, and I would plan extra spare days. The 12-day road trip has a spare day at Talcha already, and the 10-day flight trip has one too.
Does Rara Lake freeze?
It depends who you ask. Wikipedia lists the lake as frozen from December to March. Shikhar Adventure says "the lake may partially freeze". Hop Nepal says the lake "never freezes in the wintertime". Ambition Himalaya does not say.
These three claims cannot all be true, and I do not have a measured ice record for the lake, so I will not promise you a frozen lake or an open one. The average January low is -2.3 C and the average high is 7.5 C, so nights are below freezing and days are above it. That tells you about the air, not the ice. If a frozen lake is the reason you want to go, the only sensible approach is to treat it as a bonus, because getting to the lake in winter is the harder question.
When does the rhododendron bloom at Rara?
Sources name March to May as the season. Ambition Himalaya is the most specific: starting in March, blooming in April. Nobody gives a measured peak week. Bloom timing moves with the winter, so a late spring can push it back, and I would aim for April if flowers matter more than anything else.
Getting there and what it costs in 2027
There is no road to the lake itself. You either fly or drive to Talcha and walk up, 3 to 5 hours according to our itinerary. The lake is 730 m above Talcha village (2,260 m), so the altitude gain is gentle. Our two trips:
| 10 days, flies | 12 days, by road | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, fly to Talcha, walk up to the lake | Drive Kathmandu to Surkhet, Karnali Highway to Talcha, walk up |
| Budget, 2 to 4 people, per person | USD 2,290 | USD 1,010 |
| Standard | USD 2,835 | USD 1,715 |
| Luxury | USD 3,615 | USD 5,110 |
| Weather risk | Cancelled or delayed flights | Landslides on the highway |
| Spare day | Day 8 at Talcha | Day 9 at Talcha, day 12 in Kathmandu |
The prices come from the two live pages and fall as the group grows. Alone, the 10-day trek is USD 3,135, USD 3,695 and USD 4,780. Kathmandu hotels are not in any tier. You pay a 10% deposit, and the balance in Kathmandu, in USD or EUR, in cash or by card. A card payment of the balance carries 3.5%.
Budget has no porter. Standard has one porter for two guests, so about 10 kg each, and Luxury has your own porter. Travel insurance must cover helicopter rescue to 3,500 m, which is our highest point (Ghorasinga, 3,050 m) rounded up to the next 500 m. Buy it at home.
The season changes the logistics. Flights in the far west depend on weather, and the road risk rises in the monsoon. I wrote up the Talcha flight and road problems, with dates of recent landslide closures, in my Talcha guide, and the road trip in detail in the Karnali Highway guide. Flights go through Nepalgunj, which I describe in the Nepalgunj guide.
The permits are the Rara National Park entry (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and the TIMS card (NPR 2,000), per the Nepal Tourism Board pages for park fees and TIMS. The Mugu restricted area is a different thing and the standard Rara route does not enter it.
Our trip pages: Rara Lake Trek, 10 days and Rara Lake Trek by Road, 12 days. For a wider look at the lake and the trek, read my Rara Lake trek guide, and for how it compares with Phoksundo, the deepest lake in Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Rara Lake?
September to November and March to May. October is my first choice for clear air and low rain (30 mm on average). April is the pick if you want rhododendron.
Is Rara Lake frozen in winter?
The sources disagree. Wikipedia lists it as frozen December to March, one operator says it may partly freeze and another says it never does. I have no measured ice record, so I would not plan a trip around ice.
Can I visit Rara Lake in October?
Yes, it is the most popular month. Expect clear weather, an average high of 15.8 C and more people than usual, especially around Dashain and Tihar. Book flights and lodges early.
Can you trek to Rara Lake in the monsoon?
It is possible but I avoid it. About two thirds of the year's rain falls from June to September, flights slip and the Karnali Highway can close. Leeches are common on the trails.
When do the rhododendrons bloom at Rara?
The sources put it at March to May, with Ambition Himalaya naming April as the bloom. Timing shifts with the winter.
How cold is Rara Lake?
In January the average low is -2.3 C and the average high 7.5 C. Shikhar Adventure says winter nights fall below -5 C. In October the average night is 4.0 C, but a clear night can go lower, so bring a sleeping bag rated for about -5 C.
Is Rara Lake worth visiting in winter?
Only if you accept spare days, snow on the approach and some lodges being shut. I would speak to you first. If you are flexible on dates, spring and autumn give you far more margin.
How much does a Rara Lake trek cost in 2027?
For two to four people, the 10-day trek that flies is USD 2,290, USD 2,835 or USD 3,615 per person, and the 12-day trek by road is USD 1,010, USD 1,715 or USD 5,110. The prices are for Budget, Standard and Luxury.
