Rara Lake Trek by Road 2027: 12-Day Itinerary, Cost and the Karnali Highway
Updated 18 October 2026.
Short answer: You can reach Rara Lake without a single flight. My 12-day trek drives from Kathmandu to Surkhet, up the Karnali Highway to Talcha, then walks to the lake (2,990 m), around it, out to Ghorasinga (3,050 m, the highest point) and back. The roads are long, about 13 hours each way between Kathmandu and Surkhet, and the highway is rough. In return it costs far less than flying on the lower tiers. For two to four people it is USD 1,010 Budget, USD 1,715 Standard and USD 5,110 Luxury per person. Best months are September to November and March to May.
I am Shreejan. We already run a 10-day Rara trek that flies. Some of you cannot or do not want to fly, some of you want to see the country on the way, and many of you simply want the cheaper option. This is the road version, and I want to be straight about what that means: long days in a vehicle, then a quiet lake.
What is the Rara Lake trek by road?
Rara is the largest lake in Nepal, inside Rara National Park in the far west. By road, you leave Kathmandu, drive west to Surkhet where the Karnali Highway begins, and climb through Kalikot towards Talcha, a small village with an airstrip near the lake. The walk starts at Talcha and climbs about 730 m through forest to the shore.

What is the 12-day itinerary?
| Day | Route | Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drive Kathmandu to Surkhet, about 13 hours | Hotel in Surkhet |
| 2 | Up the Karnali Highway through Kalikot towards the Rara side | Kalikot, Gamgadhi or the Rara side, depending on the road |
| 3 | Reach Talcha (2,260 m), walk up to Rara Lake, 3 to 5 hours | Lodge near the lake, 2,990 m |
| 4 | Rest day at the lake, gentle walk along the shore | Lodge near the lake |
| 5 | Walk all the way round the lake, about 13 km, 4 to 5 hours | Lodge near the lake |
| 6 | Walk along the ridge to Ghorasinga, about 6 hours | Ghorasinga, 3,050 m |
| 7 | Walk back from Ghorasinga to the lake, about 6 hours | Lodge near the lake |
| 8 | Walk down from the lake to Talcha, about 5 hours | Lodge in Talcha |
| 9 | Spare day at Talcha for the weather and the road | Lodge in Talcha |
| 10 | Drive Talcha to Surkhet, about 10 to 12 hours | Hotel in Surkhet |
| 11 | Drive Surkhet to Kathmandu, about 13 hours | Your Kathmandu hotel |
| 12 | Buffer day, then departure | - |
Day 2 can be done in one very long day if the road is good. I do not rush it. Arriving safely matters more than arriving early. Day 9 is a spare day, and day 12 is a buffer in Kathmandu. They are there because landslides and weather do happen on this highway. Please do not book your flight home before day 12.
The ridge walk on days 6 and 7 is the same trail our 10-day Rara trek walks in from Bota, taken the other way. You may meet very few other people.
Road or flight: which Rara trek should you choose?
| By road, 12 days | By flight, 10 days | |
|---|---|---|
| Days away | 12, with roughly 46 to 50 hours of driving in total | 10, with flights to Jumla and from Talcha |
| Weather risk | Landslides on the highway | Cancelled or delayed flights |
| Per person, 2 to 4 guests, Budget | USD 1,010 | USD 2,290 |
| Per person, 2 to 4 guests, Standard | USD 1,715 | USD 2,835 |
| Per person, 2 to 4 guests, Luxury | USD 5,110 | USD 3,615 |
Look at the last row. On Luxury the road is more expensive than flying, because you have your own Land Cruiser for the whole trip. On Budget and Standard the road is much cheaper. If you have the time and you do not mind the drive, the road is the cheaper way to Rara. If you have less time, or the long drive worries you, fly. You can read more on the route and the lake in my main guide, the Rara Lake trek guide, and in the deepest lake in Nepal. Nepalgunj, the flight hub for the west, is covered in this guide.
When is the best time to go?
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| September to November | Clear skies and stable weather. October is the most popular month |
| December to February | Cold, with nights well below freezing. Possible, but ask me first |
| March to May | Warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom and fewer visitors than autumn |
| June to August | Monsoon. Heavy rain, leeches on the trail, and a real risk of landslides on the highway. I would not go |
What does it cost in 2027?
These are the prices on the trip page today, in US dollars per person. The price falls as the group grows.
| Group size | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (solo) | 1,770 | 2,525 | 9,360 |
| 2 to 4 | 1,010 | 1,715 | 5,110 |
| 5 to 8 | 665 | 1,390 | 4,595 |
| 9 to 12 | 645 | 1,350 | 4,070 |
| 13 to 20 | 565 | 1,330 | 3,865 |
| Budget | Standard | Luxury | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road | Local bus or shared jeep seats | Shared tourist vehicle seats | Your own Land Cruiser for the whole trip |
| Porter | None, you carry your bag | 1 porter for every 2 trekkers | 1 porter for each trekker |
| Meals | Not included | All meals | All meals, fruit and nuts, unlimited soft drinks |
| Rooms | Shared | Private | Private deluxe with ensuite |
The Rara National Park permit, the TIMS card, a guide for all 12 days and the road legs are in every tier. Standard also covers three hotel nights on the road and seven nights in lodges, so ask me what your tier covers. Kathmandu hotels before and after the trip are not, and I quote them separately. A solo trekker has no porter on Standard, and the guide carries up to 10 kg. Luxury solo has a dedicated porter. Porters are hired locally near Talcha, and on Standard each guest keeps to 10 kg so the porter carries 20 kg at most.
What do you need to know before you go?
- Time on the road. Bring something to read and a neck pillow.
- Mobile signal around Rara is very limited. We give you a SIM in Kathmandu, but expect gaps.
- The standard Rara route is not a restricted area, so you do not need a Mugu restricted-area permit.
- Insurance must cover emergency helicopter rescue up to 3,500 m. Buy it at home.
- Extra costs from delays outside our control, such as landslides on the road, bad weather or strikes, are not in the price.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive to Rara Lake? About 13 hours from Kathmandu to Surkhet, then a long day on the Karnali Highway to Talcha. Published figures from other operators give about 6 to 8 hours from Surkhet to Kalikot and about 4 hours on from there, if the road is open.
How hard is the Rara Lake trek by road? The walking is not hard: up to 6 hours a day, five days on foot, with a rest day. The hard part is the time on a rough road. The highest point is 3,050 m.
Do I need a permit for Rara? Yes. You need the Rara National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). We arrange both and they are included.
Do I need a restricted-area permit? No. The standard Rara route is not a restricted area.
Can I do it alone? Yes, with a guide. The solo price is higher because you have the guide and the vehicle to yourself.
Is it cheaper than flying to Rara? On Budget and Standard, yes, by a wide margin. On Luxury, no, because you have your own Land Cruiser for 12 days.
What if a landslide blocks the highway? We use the spare day at Talcha and the buffer day in Kathmandu. That is why I ask you not to book a flight home before day 12.
Can I fly one way and drive the other? That is not a standard trip. Message me and I will check whether it can be done and what it would cost.
How do payment and cancellation work?
You pay a deposit of 10 per cent to book and the balance when you meet us in Kathmandu, in US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. Cash carries no fee, and card carries a 3.5 per cent bank charge. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
The deposit is non-refundable, and there is no refund if you cancel yourself. I can move your trip free of charge to any date within one year, with at least 72 hours notice. If we cannot run the trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent on your behalf.
