What permits the Langtang trek needs in 2027: the national park permit at NPR 3,000, the TIMS card at NPR 2,000, the extra Shivapuri permit on the Helambu side, the guide rule and what it all costs.

Updated 23 October 2026.

Short answer: A foreigner needs two documents for Langtang: the Langtang National Park entry permit at NPR 3,000 and a TIMS card at NPR 2,000, so NPR 5,000 in total (about USD 33). SAARC citizens pay NPR 1,500 and NPR 1,000. Langtang is not a restricted area, so there is no special permit. On our treks both are bought for you and are in the price, which starts at USD 490 Budget, USD 1,050 Standard and USD 1,800 Luxury per person for two to four people on the 8-day Langtang trek.

I am Shreejan. Every week someone asks me whether they can just turn up at Syabrubesi and sort the papers there. Below is what the permits cost, where they come from, which extra one catches people on the Helambu side, and what the Nepal Tourism Board says about guides.

What permits do I need for the Langtang trek?

Two, for every route in this region. The park permit lets you into Langtang National Park. The TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System) puts you on the government record for the route you are walking.

PermitForeignerSAARC citizenWho issues it
Langtang National Park entryNPR 3,000 per entryNPR 1,500National park, sold at the Tourist Service Centre or Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, or at the park entry points

Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park entry (only if your route passes Sundarijal or Chisapani)NPR 1,000NPR 600As the park permit above

The park fees come from the Nepal Tourism Board park entry fee page, and the TIMS price from its TIMS card page. Children under 10 are free for park entry on that page. The Langtang fee is NPR 3,000 flat, with no VAT added.

US dollar figures move with the rate. At the rate I use for quotes, NPR 3,000 is about USD 20 and NPR 2,000 is about USD 13. Check the day you travel.

Do I need a guide in Langtang, and who gets the TIMS card?

Yes. The NTB page is headed "Trekking Guide and TIMS Card Mandatory on Most Trekking Routes in the Himalaya". Its list under the revised provision of 31 March 2023 names the Langtang Trek, Langtang Gosaikund Trek, Helambu Trek, Tamang Heritage Trek and Ganja La Pass Trek. It also tells trekkers to arrange the guide and the TIMS card through a government-registered trekking agency.

That is the reason a TIMS card is not something you buy alone at a counter. The agency fills in the form with trekkers, guides and route. After payment, an eCard is made for each trekker. The agency needs your passport details and your itinerary to do it, so we ask for a scan of the passport page before you fly.

I have read that some guides say the rule is enforced loosely. I would not plan a holiday around a quiet checkpoint. For the full rule and its history, I wrote Is solo trekking banned in Nepal, and the TIMS card itself is explained in this TIMS guide.

Which Langtang route needs which permits?

All our Langtang treks need the park permit and TIMS. The difference is at the Helambu end.

The 8-day Langtang trek goes up and down the same valley from Syabrubesi, so it is the park permit and TIMS. The 13-day Langtang Gosainkunda trek finishes on the Helambu side by Chisapani and Sundarijal, so we also buy the Shivapuri-Nagarjun permit, and our trip page lists it. The 12-day Ganja La pass trek comes out at Melamchi Pul Bazar, and its page lists the park permit and TIMS only.

My own rule for the Helambu side: any route that goes north of Chisapani needs the Langtang National Park permit as well. A walk only from Sundarijal through Chisapani to Nagarkot needs Shivapuri and TIMS. I cover that short route in Sundarijal, Chisapani and Nagarkot, and the wider area in Helambu and Langtang.

How do I get to the start, and what is the situation on the road?

You drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, 7 to 9 hours by road, and the trek starts the next morning. Nobody flies.

Here is what is dated. On 26 August 2026 a flood came down the Bhote Koshi river and damaged the road and the settlements at Timure and Syabrubesi. As of 15 October 2026, the road to Dhunche and Syabrubesi is open again. There are no hotels running in Syabrubesi at the moment, so on day 1 we walk on from the road head to the first open lodge on the trail. I check road and trail conditions 48 hours before every departure, and I cannot promise how the road will be in winter. I keep the current position in the Rasuwa flood status post, and I look at the cold months in Langtang in November and December.

What does it cost in total?

Permits are a small part of it. These are our prices per person for two to four people, taken from the live trip pages on 23 October 2026, with both permits included:

TrekBudgetStandardLuxury
Langtang trek, 8 daysUSD 490USD 1,050USD 1,800
Langtang Gosainkunda, 13 daysUSD 749USD 1,505USD 1,999
Langtang Ganja La pass, 12 daysUSD 1,200USD 1,900USD 2,715

Budget has no porter and no meals on the trail. Standard has one porter for every two guests and all meals. Luxury has your own porter and all meals. Kathmandu hotels are not in any trek price, and I quote them separately. A solo traveller pays more per person, and the trip pages show the solo prices. The 10 per cent deposit books your dates, and you pay the balance in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros, never in rupees. Card carries 3.5 per cent on the balance. Cash carries none.

Insurance and your permit

The permit does not cover a rescue. You need your own travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation. Our rule is cover to your trek's highest point, rounded up to the next 500 m. That is 4,000 m for Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), 5,000 m if you add the Tserko Ri hike (4,984 m) or cross Laurebina La (4,610 m), and 5,500 m for the Ganja La (5,122 m). More in the Nepal insurance guide.

When should I go, month by month?

The fees do not change with the season. The trek does. From our trip pages:

  • October and November: clearest and most reliable. This is the main season.
  • March and April: warm, with rhododendron in flower in the forest. A good second season.
  • May: still listed by us as a good month, before the rains.
  • December to February: cold, clear skies. Snow on Laurebina La, so we watch conditions. The Ganja La is usually closed and we do not cross it in deep winter.
  • June to mid-September: rain, leeches and cloud over the view. I avoid it.

Common questions about Langtang permits

How much is the Langtang National Park permit for foreigners?

NPR 3,000 per person per entry, and NPR 1,500 for SAARC citizens, on the NTB park entry fee page. It is about USD 20 at the rate I use for quotes.

What is the TIMS card price for Langtang?

NPR 2,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,000 for SAARC citizens. It is issued by a registered agency and comes as an eCard with a QR code.

Do I need a restricted area permit for Langtang?

No. Langtang is not a restricted area. You need the park permit and TIMS, and the Shivapuri-Nagarjun permit as well if your route passes Sundarijal or Chisapani.

Where can I get a Langtang permit?

The park permit is sold at the Tourist Service Centre or Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, or at the park entry points, says NTB. TIMS comes through a registered agency. On our treks we buy both before you leave Kathmandu, so you do not queue.

Can I trek Langtang without a guide?

Not under the rules as I read them. The NTB list of routes needing a guide and TIMS card includes the Langtang Trek, Langtang Gosaikund, Helambu and Ganja La. I would not risk being turned back at a checkpoint after the drive.

Is the Langtang permit the same for the Gosainkunda and Ganja La treks?

The park permit and TIMS are the same. The 13-day Gosainkunda trek also needs Shivapuri-Nagarjun at NPR 1,000, because it ends by Sundarijal.

Is Langtang open for trekking in 2027?

I cannot give you a 2027 road report in October 2026. What I can say is that the road to Dhunche and Syabrubesi was open as of 15 October 2026 and that there are no hotels running in Syabrubesi, so day 1 ends at the first open lodge. Send me your dates and I will tell you where things stand that week.

Is the Langtang park fee charged per day?

No. The NTB page lists it as NPR 3,000 per person per entry. It is not a daily fee, so a longer trek does not cost more in park fees.
