Upper Mustang is the one part of Nepal that still feels like the Tibetan plateau, and guests keep asking us for a way to see it without losing two days to the road from Kathmandu. This is that route. I am Shreejan, and I built it from our live 10-day Upper Mustang trek, then changed what needed changing.

You fly to Pokhara and then to Jomsom, and walk to Kagbeni the same morning. From there it is our usual route to Lo Manthang. I added one full day for the Chhoser caves, because squeezing them into the free day does not do them justice. You walk back down to Kagbeni, then ride a private jeep from Jomsom to Pokhara and fly to Kathmandu. If you would rather skip the three walking days back, you can ride from Lo Manthang to Pokhara instead and keep the time for weather.

One honest point. Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, so the trail stays fairly dry in the monsoon and July is workable. But our best months are March to May and September to November. In the monsoon the Pokhara to Jomsom flight is often delayed or cancelled and the road can have landslides. I plan around both, and I suggest a spare day before your international flight.

The trek itself is the same as our 10-day route: long days of 5 to 8 hours, three of them 7 to 8 hours, and nights above 3,000 m. The restricted-area permit is USD 50 per day, so USD 450 for the 9 days you are inside, and we pay it for you. We run this as a private trek by default. Your pace, your rest days, your own guide. Every booking helps pay the teacher's salary at our Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum, where 70 children learn free of charge.

One more night on the trail for rest and acclimatisation, on top of the Chhoser night already in the route. Covers your guide and shared lodging; meals are not included on the Budget tier, as on the trek itself. Includes the restricted-area permit for the extra day. Choose the number of person-nights: two guests for one night is 2.

One extra night in a Kathmandu hotel matching your tier, twin-sharing, for example before the trek or after you return. Choose the number of person-nights: two guests for one night is 2. A solo traveller pays for a single room, so choose 2 for one night.

Per room per night, twin-sharing, breakfast usually included. The route has two Pokhara nights (day 2 and day 13), so two guests sharing one room choose 2. A solo traveller pays for a whole room. Hotel names are confirmed after booking.

Skips the three walking days back to Kagbeni and gives you spare days for weather or a slower pace. One jeep carries four guests, so choose the number of jeeps. The walking days saved are not credited. We confirm the route and timing for your group when you book.

One extra vehicle run between Tribhuvan International Airport and your Kathmandu hotel. Price is per vehicle per transfer, not per person: choose the number of transfers.

For one traveller on their own: a whole room for you on the trek, and the jeep is not shared.

Essential Information

Before you go

  • Arrival: arrive in Kathmandu at least one day before your first flight. Our team meets you at the airport.
  • Weather and a spare day: Jomsom flights run in the morning only and are often delayed or cancelled in the monsoon and in strong wind. Keep one spare day before your international flight. If you lose a day on the way in, the Chhoser day is the first to give way.
  • Season: March to May and September to November are best. July and August are workable because Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow, but expect flight delays and possible landslides on the road.
  • Fitness: three days of 7 to 8 hours and nights above 3,000 m. No technical walking. Train with long hikes and stairs before you come.
  • Altitude: you sleep highest at Lo Manthang, 3,840 m, and cross the Choku La at about 4,290 m. Your guide carries a pulse oximeter. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book.
  • Luggage: you carry a small daypack. Standard and Luxury porters carry the rest, up to 10 kg per trekker. Domestic flights have luggage limits and we confirm them at your briefing. Spare luggage stays free at our Kathmandu office.
  • Food: tell us if you are vegetarian or eat no egg. We tell every lodge.
  • Mobile data is not reliable north of Kagbeni.
  • Visa: USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, in cash on arrival, with a passport valid for at least six months.
  • Insurance: buy it at home. It must cover medical costs and helicopter rescue to 5,000 m.
  • Money: carry cash for drinks, snacks, hot showers and charging, about USD 10 to 15 per person per day, and for tips.

Why the hotel nights are separate

Hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara are not in any of our trek tiers, so you choose the level you want. This route has two nights in each city.

FAQs

Our standard 10-day trek drives from Kathmandu to Kagbeni, one very long day in each direction, 10 to 14 hours on rough road. This version flies Kathmandu to Pokhara and Pokhara to Jomsom, so you start fresh, and it adds the Chhoser caves day. The price is higher because of the flights and the jeep back.
We recommend walking. It is about two hours, gentle, and a good test of how you feel in the heat and the altitude before the real trek. If someone is tired after the early flight, a jeep for this stretch is possible. Tell your guide.
We move you to the next available flight, or go by road if the road is open. We ask the airline to refund an unused ticket, but extra hotel nights and meals caused by a cancellation or a landslide are yours to pay, because they are outside our control. We check the flight and road 48 hours before each leg, and if we lose a day on the way in, the Chhoser day is the first thing to give way.
Yes, with open eyes. Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, so the trail itself stays fairly dry in the monsoon, and July is workable. Our best months are March to May and September to November. The weak spots are the Pokhara to Jomsom flight, often delayed or cancelled in the monsoon, and the road below Jomsom, which can have landslides. We plan around both.
Chhoser is a village with cave monasteries and ancient cave dwellings north of Lo Manthang. This route includes a full day for it, with a third night in Lo Manthang, and the extra day of the restricted-area permit is already in the price. Your guide confirms the walking time on the day.
Yes. Instead of three days walking back to Kagbeni you can take a jeep from Lo Manthang to Pokhara. It costs more than the Jomsom jeep and skips the walking days, which also gives you spare days for weather or a slower pace. Ask us when you book and we will confirm the price for your group.
You should be a fit person who enjoys long hiking days. There is no climbing gear or technical walking, but there are three days of 7 to 8 hours and you sleep above 3,000 m for most of the trek. The highest point is the Choku La at about 4,290 m, and you sleep highest at Lo Manthang, 3,840 m. Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen levels.
The Upper Mustang restricted-area permit is USD 50 per person per day, and this route has 9 days inside the area, so USD 450 per person. We pay it and it is in the price, together with the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and the TIMS card. You cannot walk here without it, and since 22 March 2026 even a solo trekker can be permitted through a registered agency with a licensed guide.
Yes to both. Almost all our departures are private, so it is your own group with your own guide. Children pay the adult price, because the permit, the flights and the lodge all cost us the same for a child. Standard solo guests have no porter, the guide carries up to 10 kg, and Luxury solo guests have their own porter.
No. Hotels in the cities are not in any of our trek prices. This route has two nights in Kathmandu and two in Pokhara. As a guide, a 3-star hotel in Pokhara is about USD 100 per room per night and a higher-category hotel about USD 150, and you can add them when you book. Our family homestay in Kathmandu is USD 15 per person per night and supports our learning centre.
A 10% deposit confirms the trip and the balance is paid in Kathmandu. You can pay in US dollars or euros, cash or card. Card payments carry a 3.5% bank charge, cash in Kathmandu carries none. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
The deposit is not refundable and there is no refund if you cancel. If you need to change, rescheduling is free with at least 7 days' notice for restricted areas like Upper Mustang, to any date within one year. If we cannot run the trip ourselves, we refund what you paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent, such as permits and flights.
A licensed guide with experience in Upper Mustang. We confirm his name after you book, a little before departure, because we want him to be available, fit and well on the day rather than promise a name months ahead and change it at the last minute.
Yes. The Everest Holiday is registered in Nepal, company registration 147653/072/073, trekking licence 2090/072, member of the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal, number 1586. These show we are a real, legal company. They do not prove quality, and even licensed companies have had problems, so please ask any agency for a phone call first. We are happy to speak any time.
