Everest Base Camp Trek Cost from Austria: Prices in EUR, Flights, Visa and Insurance

Vienna has one advantage over many European airports: Air Arabia flies from there to Sharjah, and the cheapest of 15 itineraries was EUR 1,013 return. None was nonstop.

Per person, for one to four trekkers, the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek is about EUR 1,240 on Budget, about EUR 2,220 on Standard and about EUR 4,440 on Luxury in euros, which is US$1,399, US$2,499 and US$4,999; 2027 is the same. A single traveller flying from Vienna should set aside about EUR 2,770 to EUR 3,660 on Budget, EUR 3,590 to EUR 4,390 on Standard without a travel companion, or EUR 5,920 to EUR 6,760 on Luxury, once the flight, visa, insurance and tips are counted.

Vienna to Kathmandu: the fares on the day

The fare settings: economy cabin, a single adult, one hold bag, leaving on Sunday 25 October 2026 and flying home on Wednesday 11 November, one booking, a maximum of one change per direction.

The search for Vienna (VIE) gave 15 itineraries between EUR 1,013 and EUR 1,579, all with one change. Vienna has the cheapest first leg of the lot, because Air Arabia flies it to Sharjah and on to Kathmandu.

That airline both ways was the lowest fare, EUR 1,013: Vienna 12:10, Sharjah 20:50, then the 03:05 flight arriving in Kathmandu at 08:45 on 26 October, about 15 hours 50 minutes. The return at that price leaves Kathmandu at 23:45 and is in Vienna at 11:20 on 12 November. Take the 09:25 departure instead, landing in Vienna at 21:10 the same day, and the fare is EUR 1,025.

The quickest ways out were Turkish Airlines through Istanbul (Vienna 19:30, Kathmandu 11:20 next morning, about 11 hours 5 minutes, EUR 1,453 with an Air Arabia return) and Air India through Delhi (Vienna 20:30, Kathmandu 13:55, about 12 hours 40 minutes, EUR 1,334). Emirates via Dubai started at EUR 1,267, and Qatar via Doha at EUR 1,366, though the journey out takes nearly 22 hours. The fastest way home, Turkish Airlines from Kathmandu at 12:45 with a Vienna landing at 21:55 the same evening, raised the fare to EUR 1,579 when paired with Air Arabia out. A few of the Emirates itineraries list no personal item, so check what is allowed on your ticket.

The full bill in euros

One person per row. The flight cell runs from the lowest to the highest itinerary. The column after it adds the visa (30 days), insurance and tips, and on Budget your trail meals, or on the other two tiers your spending money. A Kathmandu room is a separate cost; our family homestay charges US$15 per person per night, about EUR 13.

If your tier is Budget, buy your own meals: about US$25 to US$40 daily, so US$300 to US$480 in total. If it is Standard or Luxury, meals are covered and you only need pocket money, 20,000 to 30,000 rupees or US$130 to US$195, for showers, charging and snacks. Get the rupees in Kathmandu before you fly to the mountains. Guides are tipped US$15 to US$20 a day, and porters US$10 to US$15 a day.

The visa for an Austrian passport

Austria is not among the twelve countries whose citizens must apply for a Nepali visa before they travel, so you can get it at Tribhuvan airport or apply online beforehand. The visa costs US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days (about EUR 45) or US$125 for 90 days. Payment is in US dollars, and each allows multiple entries. The Austrian foreign ministry (BMEIA) adds that the passport must be valid for at least six months on entry and have two blank pages. What the foreign ministry says about Nepal

The BMEIA page for Nepal was dated 7 October 2026 and unchanged since 29 September. It puts the Terai in the south at security level 3 of 4 and the rest of the country at level 2. For hikers it says a valid TIMS certificate is needed and that every hiker must book a licensed trekking guide and walk with that guide. It also states that no social insurance agreement exists between Austria and Nepal, and it recommends a travel insurance that covers all risks. Citizens can register their trip free of charge at reiseregistrierung.at.

Austria has no embassy in Kathmandu. The BMEIA page lists an honorary consulate there, in Naxal, and the embassy in New Delhi covers Nepal. The ministry's 24-hour Bürgerservice number is +43 1 90115 4411; save it before you leave.

Why your e-card is not enough

The Austrian health fund ÖGK says that in a country with which no agreement exists, you pay treatment costs yourself and may submit the invoice for partial reimbursement at Austrian rates, that rescue and air-ambulance costs are not covered, and that a private travel health policy is recommended. The European card (EKVK) works in the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and a few Balkan countries; Nepal is not among them.

Read three lines of the wording. The altitude limit: 6,000 m or more, as Kala Patthar is 5,545 m and some policies end at 3,000 or 4,000 m. The helicopter: evacuation costs US$3,000 to US$5,000 (about EUR 2,660 to EUR 4,440) without cover. The cause: illness has to be covered, not just injury. Tiers, in one place

Budget, Standard and Luxury differ in comfort and in who carries what. On Budget your pack is yours, rooms are shared, meals are not included and the Lukla flight is fixed-wing. Standard includes all meals, a private room and a porter shared by two trekkers. Luxury has its own porter, a deluxe private room with ensuite, fruit, nuts, unlimited soft drinks and the helicopter both ways. Every tier has a licensed guide, permits (NPR 3,000, 3,000 and 2,000), airport transfers and a borrowed down jacket and sleeping bag rated to minus 15. A solo trekker on Standard has no porter, so the guide carries up to 10 kg, and no single supplement is charged. Hotels in Kathmandu are extra.

From the Grossglockner to Gorak Shep

The Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain, stands at about 3,800 m. Gorak Shep, where trekkers sleep, is at 5,164 m, and Kala Patthar above it is 5,545 m. Austrian hillwalkers have the legs for it: expect five to seven hours on most days and two acclimatisation days among the 12. • 1 to 4 people: Budget EUR 1,240, Standard EUR 2,220, Luxury EUR 4,440, which is US$1,399, US$2,499 and US$4,999.
• 5 to 8 people: Budget EUR 1,150, Standard EUR 2,170, Luxury EUR 4,390, which is US$1,299, US$2,449 and US$4,949.
• 9 to 12 people: Budget EUR 1,060, Standard EUR 2,130, Luxury EUR 4,350, which is US$1,199, US$2,399 and US$4,899.
• 13 to 20 people: Budget EUR 890, Standard EUR 2,080, Luxury EUR 4,300, which is US$999, US$2,349 and US$4,849.

Private and group trips are priced the same per person. Only the headcount shifts you into another band.

Leave, public holidays and clocks

The Urlaubsgesetz gives 30 Werktage of leave a year, 36 after 25 years of service. The labour-market service AMS explains that Werktage are all calendar days except Sundays and public holidays, so on a five-day week 30 Werktage equal 25 working days. Austrian public holidays near the trek are Monday 26 October 2026 (Nationalfeiertag) and Sunday 1 November (Allerheiligen, so no working day lost). In spring 2027, Easter Monday is 29 March and Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May; 1 May falls on a Saturday.

On Sunday 25 October 2026 Austrian clocks go back. Until then Nepal is 3 hours 45 minutes in front of Vienna; from that date the gap is 4 hours 45 minutes. Check the Nepali holidays before choosing dates. Dashain falls on 17 to 23 October 2026 and Tihar on 8 to 12 November 2026, and while they last the permit offices are shut, so the 48-hour processing time counts only working days. In peak weeks, fixed-wing flights to Lukla leave from Manthali. The drive takes four to five hours and the pick-up is between midnight and 2 am. Helicopter guests on Luxury leave from Kathmandu.

Paying from Austria

The deposit is a tenth of the price. You can move a booked trek to any date in the following twelve months without a fee, if you tell us at least 72 hours before (a week for Tibet, Kailash and restricted-area routes). If you cancel instead, the deposit and anything else you have paid are not refunded. The balance is settled in Kathmandu in dollars or euros: pay in cash and it is the exact amount, pay by card and 3.5 per cent is added. Rupees cannot be used. When we are the one who calls a trek off, the refund covers everything you paid except taxes, bank and card charges and sums already spent on permits and flights.

Check us before you pay

Four public records will tell you whether we are real: the company registrar, TAAN, the tourism licence and the forex certificate. We have been registered in Kathmandu since 2016, our TAAN number is 1586, and more than 300 reviews are on TripAdvisor, Google and Trustpilot. Three generations of my family have guided.
