Budget means no porter so you carry your own bag, shared rooms, meals not included, and fixed-wing flight to Lukla. Standard means 1 porter per 2 trekkers, private rooms, all meals, and fixed-wing flight. Luxury means a dedicated 1:1 porter, private deluxe ensuite room, all meals plus fruit, nuts and unlimited soft drinks, and round-trip helicopter between Kathmandu and Lukla. We explain when the helicopter pays off in helicopter return cost.
Every tier includes a licensed guide, all permits, Kathmandu airport pick-up and drop-off, teahouse nights, first-aid kit and pulse oximeter, and farewell dinner. No tier includes the international flight, Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, or Kathmandu hotels. Kathmandu hotels are quoted separately and our own family homestay is US$15 per person per night, about HUF 4,900. Things you buy on the trail are also outside the price. We provide a down jacket and a minus 15 sleeping bag free on every tier.
Lukla sits at 2,860 m. Fixed-wing Kathmandu to Lukla is about US$253 one way and about US$506 return, about HUF 83,200 and HUF 166,400. | Shared helicopter Lukla to Kathmandu | 710 | 233,500 |
Do you need a guide, and what does a porter cost?
A licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card are required on most trekking routes under the Nepal Tourism Board rule from 31 March 2023; the Everest (Khumbu) region does not enforce it locally, but we always trek with a licensed guide.
We say this plainly because the rule confuses many trekkers. You can read the longer answer in can you trek without a guide and the single supplement rules in solo cost and single supplement. We always send a licensed guide and we check your insurance before departure.
Porter rules follow the tier. Luxury solo still gets a dedicated porter. Standard solo has no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. Budget never has a porter. On EBC the guide joins from Lukla, so there is no single supplement. A Standard porter load is about 20 kg shared between two trekkers. If you want an extra porter it is US$25 a day, about HUF 8,200, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top.
How much luggage can you take to Lukla?
Plan on about 10 kg checked plus 5 kg hand carry on mountain flights. Every airline sets its own limit. No airline publishes a Lukla excess rate. Extra bags may fly later. Leave the rest at your Kathmandu hotel.
Flights are about 20 minutes from Manthali and about 40 minutes from Kathmandu. In busy windows, about 15 March to 15 May and 25 September to 30 November, fixed-wing flights leave from Manthali at Ramechhap. That means a four to five hour drive with hotel pick-up between midnight and 2 am. We explain the airport move in Manthali airport guide.
What permits do you need, and are they included?
Yes, they are included. We arrange and pay them in every tier. You need three things for this route. Sagarmatha National Park NPR 3,000 plus Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee NPR 3,000 plus TIMS card NPR 2,000. That is NPR 8,000 in total, about US$52 at roughly NPR 154 to the dollar in early October 2026, about HUF 17,100.
The park fee follows the Nepal Tourism Board's published rate, and we check every fee again before your trek. For the full list see EBC permits and fees and Nepal permits guide. Permits need at least 48 hours in government working days, so tell us your dates early.
Do Hungarian passport holders need a visa for Nepal?
Yes, you need a tourist visa, and you can get it on arrival. Under the Nepal Department of Immigration's general rule, all other passport holders may obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and other designated entry points, except citizens of 12 listed countries. Hungary is not among those 12. The 12 are Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Syria.
The visa exemption covers diplomatic, official and service passports only for 15 countries, and Hungary is not on it. So an ordinary Hungarian passport falls under the general rule for visa on arrival.
The fees are 15 days USD 30, 30 days USD 50 and 90 days USD 125. Pay in USD. You can also apply online before arrival. Thirty days covers a 12 day trek with spare days in Kathmandu either side. A visa obtained from a mission must be used within six months of issue. Maximum tourist stay is 150 days per visa year. An extension inside Nepal costs USD 3 a day, minimum 15 days.
Our advice is simple. Apply online before you fly, print the receipt, and carry some US dollars cash for the fee. The printed receipt with barcode is valid for 15 days. Check your passport has enough validity and blank pages, and confirm with the Department before you book. You can read our step by step notes in Nepal e-visa guide and Nepal visa on arrival guide.
Does your European health card cover you in Nepal?
No. Your European Health Insurance Card gives you no cover in Nepal at all. The EU's Your Europe page on temporary stays says the card covers unplanned treatment during temporary stays in other EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, with the same rights as people insured in that country.
Nepal is not in that group. The same page says, "Your EHIC does not cover private healthcare." It also says the card does not cover rescue and repatriation or planned treatment abroad.
For Everest Base Camp you need proper cover bought at home. You need trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter rescue and evacuation for illness as well as accident, confirmed in writing before you buy. A helicopter evacuation from Base Camp to Kathmandu costs USD 3,000 to USD 5,000, about HUF 986,700 to 1,644,400. We check your policy before departure. Our cost guide gives three bands for two to three weeks. Basic trekking cover to 6,000 m is USD 50 to 100, about HUF 16,400 to 32,900. Full travel plus trekking is USD 100 to 180, about HUF 32,900 to 59,200. Premium with cancellation is USD 150 to 250, about HUF 49,300 to 82,200. Read what coverage you need in Nepal and helicopter cover to 6,000 m before you pay.
What will you spend on the trail?
It depends on your tier. On Budget, meals are not included, so you pay for food each day. Allow USD 25 to 40 a day, or USD 300 to 480 for 12 days, about HUF 98,700 to 157,900. On Standard and Luxury, all meals are included, so you only need spending money for showers, charging, wifi, snacks and tips. We suggest NPR 20,000 to 30,000, USD 130 to 195, about HUF 42,800 to 64,100.
Bring that money from Kathmandu in rupees. The only cash machines on the route are in Namche and they are often empty. Prices rise as you climb because everything is carried up the trail. Dal bhat is NPR 500 to 600 (USD 4 to 5) around Lukla to Namche, NPR 600 to 800 (USD 5 to 6) from Namche to Dingboche, and NPR 800 to 1,000 (USD 6 to 8) above Dingboche. You can read why we like it in dal bhat guide.
Tea and coffee are NPR 80 to 100 lower down, NPR 100 to 150 in the middle, and NPR 150 to 250 (USD 1.20 to 2) high up. Bottled water for one litre is NPR 150 to 200 low, NPR 200 to 300 in the middle, and NPR 300 to 500 (USD 2.50 to 4) high. Wifi per device is NPR 200 to 300 below Namche and NPR 300 to 500 above. Charging is free to NPR 200 lower down, then NPR 200 to 500. A hot shower is NPR 200 to 300 low, then NPR 300 to 500 or more high. Laundry is NPR 300 to 500 a kilo, and not available above Namche. An Everest Link wifi card in Namche is NPR 500 to 1,000.
A day at the top of the route with a shower, one charge, a litre of water and one wifi session is NPR 1,100 to 2,000 (USD 7 to 13).
What is the full cost from Hungary?
This is the door to door figure for one person on the 12 day trek. It uses the cheapest return fare on 5 October 2026, Budapest to Kathmandu leaving 19 October 2026 and returning 5 November 2026, at USD 2,246, about HUF 739,000, seen as EUR 2,001. Fares move. It uses a 30 day visa at USD 50, tips as below, and insurance at USD 50 to 180. The trek prices are in US dollars. That is the price you pay. Forint figures are approximate, at about HUF 329 to the dollar and EUR 1 at about USD 1.12 in early October 2026, and the rate moves.
For Budget, the low total is trek USD 1,399 plus flight USD 2,246 plus visa USD 50 plus meals USD 300 plus guide tip USD 180 plus insurance USD 50, which is USD 4,225. The high total is 1,399 plus 2,246 plus 50 plus meals 480 plus tip 240 plus insurance 180, which is USD 4,595. About HUF 1,390,000 to 1,510,000, about EUR 3,760 to 4,090.
For Standard solo, with no porter and meals included, the low total is 2,499 plus 2,246 plus 50 plus tip 180 plus insurance 50, which is USD 5,025. The high is 2,499 plus 2,246 plus 50 plus tip 240 plus insurance 180, which is USD 5,215. About HUF 1,655,000 to 1,715,000, about EUR 4,480 to 4,650.
For Luxury, the low total is 4,999 plus 2,246 plus 50 plus tip 300 plus insurance 50, which is USD 7,645. The high is 4,999 plus 2,246 plus 50 plus tip 420 plus insurance 180, which is USD 7,895. About HUF 2,515,000 to 2,595,000, about EUR 6,810 to 7,030.
| Tier, one person | Low USD | High USD | Approx HUF | Approx EUR |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Tips in these totals are lead guide USD 15 to 20 a day, or USD 180 to 240 over 12 days, about HUF 59,200 to 78,900, plus porter USD 10 to 15 a day, or USD 120 to 180, about HUF 39,500 to 59,200. Luxury guide plus porter together is USD 300 to 420, about HUF 98,700 to 138,100. Given at the end in Kathmandu.
Not in the totals are Kathmandu hotel, showers, charging and wifi up to about USD 150 more, the card charge, and delays. Our own family homestay is USD 15 per person per night, about HUF 4,900, quoted separately. You can pay the balance on arrival in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients. Read the full breakdown in our cost guide and the package in Everest Base Camp 12 days.
What else costs money that no package price shows?
The package covers the trek itself. Every tier includes a licensed guide, all permits, Kathmandu airport pick up and drop off, teahouse nights, first aid kit and pulse oximeter, and farewell dinner. We also provide a down jacket and minus 15 sleeping bag free on every tier. But no tier includes the international flight, the Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, Kathmandu hotels, or things bought on the trail.
In practice that means four extras to plan for. First, the flight from Hungary and the visa. Second, insurance bought at home with trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter rescue for illness as well as accident. Third, tips for guide and porter, paid at the end in Kathmandu. Fourth, trail spending for showers, charging, wifi, snacks and water, plus Kathmandu hotel nights before and after the trek.
Two more points catch people out. If you pay by card, add 3.5 per cent. If weather or flights slip, you may need extra hotel nights and meals.
Does it get cheaper as a group?
Yes. Same price for private or group. Discount is by group size only. We never add strangers to a private booking. Prices hold for 2027 departures. Deposit is 10 per cent, with the balance on arrival in Kathmandu.
| Group size | Budget USD | Standard USD | Luxury USD |

In approximate forint, that is Budget about HUF 460,000, 427,000, 394,000 and 329,000 as the group grows. Standard about HUF 822,000, 805,000, 789,000 and 773,000. Luxury about HUF 1,644,000, 1,628,000, 1,611,000 and 1,595,000. Forint figures are approximate and the rate moves.
Solo is a special case. Luxury solo still gets a dedicated porter. Standard solo has no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. Budget never has one. On Everest Base Camp solo there is no single supplement because the guide joins from Lukla. If you want your own carrier, an extra porter is USD 25 a day, about HUF 8,200, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top. A porter load is about 20 kg shared between two Standard trekkers. See Everest Base Camp 12 days and solo cost and single supplement.
How many days off do you need?
We plan you door-to-door at 19 calendar days for the autumn dates we priced, 19 October to 6 November. That is 15 weekdays. Friday 23 October is a Hungarian public holiday, the 1956 Revolution, so the count falls to about 14 working days if you work Monday to Friday. Agree the exact days with your employer.
Hungarian public holidays are 1 January, 15 March, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Whit Monday, 20 August, 23 October, 1 November, 25 December and 26 December. In 2026 23 October is a Friday and 1 November is a Sunday. Check your employer's calendar for how holidays apply where you work.
For spring planning, Western Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March 2027, so Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March 2027. Check the official calendar before you book leave.
Does Nepal close for Dashain and Tihar?
For government offices, yes. Nepal's government holiday list for 2026 gives Dashain as 17 to 23 October and Tihar as 8 to 12 November, and government offices and many shops close on those days.
That matters for your timing. The cheapest option arrives in Kathmandu at 06:35 on Wednesday 21 October, in the Dashain period. Our airport pick-up is included in every tier, but permits need at least 48 hours in government working days and we arrange and pay them. So we would start the trek the day after landing and keep spare days at the end, which also helps if a flight slips by a day. The flight home on 5 November leaves just before Tihar begins.
When should you go, autumn or spring?
October is the most reliable month and the busiest. Mid-November into early December is cold at night, very clear and quieter. March and April are warmer, with rhododendrons in flower, and are the second busiest season. June to mid-September is the monsoon. Our best time guide has the month-by-month detail.
We priced autumn only, for 19 October to 5 November 2026.
From our own operation, the busy windows are about 15 March to 15 May and 25 September to 30 November. In those windows the fixed-wing flights to Lukla leave from Manthali in Ramechhap, not Kathmandu. That means hotel pick up between midnight and 2 am and a four to five hour drive, then a flight of about 20 minutes from Manthali against about 40 minutes from Kathmandu. Luxury uses the helicopter both ways instead.
Autumn 2026 overlaps Dashain, as above. Spring 2027 includes the Easter weekend, 26 March to 29 March 2027, but check the official calendar. Our trek prices hold for 2027 departures, in US dollars. The dollar is the price you pay and forint figures are approximate, and the rate moves.
Is Everest Base Camp hard, and can a beginner do it?
We grade this trek as strenuous. Plan on five to seven hours walking a day, day after day, and you sleep as high as Gorak Shep at 5,164 m. Mount Everest is 8,848.86 m on the 2020 survey. Lukla itself is 2,860 m, so you are high from day one.
A healthy beginner who trains first can do it, but it is not a walk. Acclimatisation days are built into our itinerary. Read how fit you need to be and where people struggle on the altitude profile before you decide.
Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit, not bottled oxygen. Altitude, not technique, is what stops people, so walk slowly and tell the guide about every headache. A licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card are required on most trekking routes under the Nepal Tourism Board rule from 31 March 2023; the Everest (Khumbu) region does not enforce it locally, but we always trek with a licensed guide.
How do you pay from Hungary?
You pay the trek in US dollars. The dollar is the price you pay. Forint figures are approximate at about HUF 329 to the dollar in early October 2026, and the rate moves. You pay a 10 per cent deposit to hold the dates and the balance on arrival in Kathmandu. You can pay the balance in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
On terms, the deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel there is no refund. We offer free rescheduling, with at least 72 hours notice (seven days for restricted-area, Tibet and Kailash trips), to any date within one year. If we cannot run the trip we refund what you paid less taxes, bank and card charges and any money already spent on permits and flights.
Our own family homestay in Kathmandu is US$15 per person per night, about HUF 4,900, quoted separately. Kathmandu hotels are not included in any trek tier. If you add an extra porter it is US$25 a day, about HUF 8,200, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top.

Quick answers for Hungary

Does 23 October help? It is a Friday in 2026 and a public holiday, so if you work Monday to Friday and are away that day it should not need a leave day. Check with your employer. Check the official calendar for Easter 2027.

We will give you the real figure, including the parts that are not in our favour.
