Everest Base Camp Trek Cost from Sweden: Prices in SEK and EUR, Flights, Visa and Insurance

Stockholm to Kathmandu is a long way by any route, and the search returned only six itineraries, all with one change each way. The cheapest was SEK 17,499. The trek is the part I can price exactly. The Everest Holiday is a Kathmandu company, registered in 2016 and run by a family of three generations of guides. Per person, for two to four trekkers, the 12-day trek costs US$1,399 on Budget, US$2,785 on Standard or US$4,999 on Luxury; in kronor that is about SEK 14,000, SEK 27,800 and SEK 49,900, and the same prices apply in 2027. A solo Budget trekker pays US$2,275, about SEK 22,700.

With the flights, the visa, insurance and tips added, one traveller from Stockholm spends about SEK 46,000 to SEK 53,900 on Budget, SEK 49,400 to SEK 56,100 on Standard travelling solo, and SEK 72,700 to SEK 80,000 on Luxury.

Kronor, door to door

The table is per person. The flight column shows the lowest and highest Arlanda fare, and the next one rolls up the 30-day visa, insurance, tips and either meals on the trail (Budget) or spending money (Standard, Luxury). Kathmandu hotels are priced separately; our own homestay is US$15 per person per night, around SEK 150.

Only Budget trekkers pay for meals on the trail, US$25 to US$40 a day, so US$300 to US$480 over the trek. On Standard and Luxury food is in the price, and between NPR 20,000 and 30,000 (US$130 to US$195) is plenty for showers, charging and snacks. Take out rupees in Kathmandu. Guides get US$15 to US$20 a day in tips, porters US$10 to US$15.

What Arlanda to Kathmandu looks like

Search used: economy, one adult, a checked bag, out Sunday 25 October 2026, home Wednesday 11 November, a single change at most in each direction, one ticket. No itinerary was nonstop.

The cheapest, SEK 17,499, was Emirates out via Dubai: Arlanda 15:00, Kathmandu 08:20 the next morning, about 12 hours 35 minutes, with Thai Airways home through Bangkok, which leaves Kathmandu at 13:30 and lands at Arlanda at 06:45 the next morning, about 22 hours. That fare listed a cabin bag and a checked bag but no personal item. Pairing the same Emirates outbound with Qatar Airways home via Doha was SEK 17,907; the return, leaving at 11:05, arrives at 06:40 the next morning after about 24 hours 20 minutes.

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul out (Arlanda 18:15, Kathmandu 11:20, about 12 hours 20 minutes) with Thai home was SEK 19,547 and included a personal item. Emirates out with Turkish home was SEK 19,692, and the Turkish return, leaving Kathmandu at 12:45, arrives at 10:20 the next day after about 26 hours 20 minutes. Turkish out and Qatar home was SEK 19,955, and Turkish both ways SEK 21,741. So the day's range was SEK 17,499 to SEK 21,741. I priced Arlanda only, so Gothenburg and Malmö travellers should search their own airports.

Visa on arrival for Swedish passports

A Swedish passport lets you buy the visa after landing in Kathmandu. Immigration charges US$30 (15 days), US$50 (30 days, about SEK 500) or US$125 (90 days) for a multiple-entry tourist visa, in US dollars only. Doing the online form first and printing the receipt speeds things up. The passport needs six months of validity, and you hand over a photo. Sweden is not one of the 12 nationalities required to apply before arrival. Steps are in the visa on arrival guide.

Why the EU health card will not help

The European health insurance card from Försäkringskassan is valid within the EU, EEA and Switzerland, not in Nepal. In Sweden, travel cover often sits inside the home insurance (hemförsäkring) or comes with a bank card, and neither is likely to cover trekking to 6,000 metres or a helicopter, so read the conditions. Buy a travel policy at home before you fly; we do not recommend buying cover in Nepal.

Four lines matter in the conditions: trekking up to 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545 m), helicopter rescue, treatment of illness and not only injury, and repatriation. Without cover you would pay US$3,000 to US$5,000, about SEK 30,000 to SEK 50,000, for a helicopter from Base Camp to Kathmandu. Which tier?

Which tier suits whom? Budget works if you want the lowest price and are happy to carry your own pack and sort your own food. Standard takes the load off your shoulders and the meals off your list. Luxury is for the traveller who wants the helicopter flights, a room of real comfort and a porter walking only with you.

In every tier you get a licensed guide, permits worth NPR 8,000 in total, airport transfers, and a loaned down jacket and sleeping bag. Alone on Standard, you have no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg. On Budget, a solo Everest Base Camp trekker pays US$2,275 instead of US$1,399. The highest night is Gorak Shep, 5,164 m. Can Sweden prepare you for it?

Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain at about 2,100 m, is lower than Lukla (2,860 m). The Kungsleden, 440 km from Abisko to Hemavan, will give you stamina but no altitude. For that you rely on the two acclimatisation days in the itinerary and on going slowly. Expect five to seven hours of walking a day. Read how fit you need to be.

Group prices in kronor

The price per person is the same for a private trip and for a group; the group band is the only variable.

Swedish leave, bridge days and the season

Swedish law gives most employees 25 days of paid holiday a year, enough for the whole trip with flights. Good Friday is 26 March 2027 and Easter Monday 29 March. Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May, and the Friday after it is a classic klämdag, a bridge day. Midsummer Eve is 25 June, but by then the monsoon has reached Nepal. In Nepal the offices are closed for Dashain (17 to 23 October 2026) and Tihar (8 to 12 November), and a permit takes 48 hours of government working days.

Swedish clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026: before that, Nepal runs 3 hours 45 minutes ahead of Stockholm, and after it 4 hours 45 minutes. In autumn, Lukla flights on the fixed-wing tiers depart from Manthali, a four to five hour drive that starts with a midnight to 2 am pick-up; Luxury guests travel by helicopter and skip it. Leave a spare day at the end.

How Swedes pay us

Ten per cent as a deposit confirms the booking. You settle the balance in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros, paying cash with no surcharge or card with 3.5 per cent on top. Swedish kronor and Nepali rupees cannot be accepted. If your plans change, your trek moves free to any date within a year as soon as we have three days' notice (a week where Tibet, Kailash or a restricted area is involved). If you cancel instead, the deposit and anything else you have paid are not refunded. If we are the ones who cannot run it, you get back what you paid less taxes, bank or card charges and sums already spent.
