Everest Base Camp Trek Cost from Spain: Euro Prices, Flights, Visa and Insurance

The Camino de Santiago is the walk most Spaniards know, and its highest point, Cruz de Ferro, is about 1,500 metres. Everest Base Camp is 5,364 metres, and you sleep at Gorak Shep, 5,164 metres. The days are shorter than a Camino stage, five to seven hours rather than 25 kilometres, but the air is thin, and that changes everything.

We registered The Everest Holiday in Kathmandu in 2016. Behind the company are three generations of family guides. In short, US$1,399 on Budget, US$2,785 on Standard and US$4,999 on Luxury per person for one to four trekkers, roughly EUR 1,240, EUR 2,220 and EUR 4,440, all held for 2027. With flights from Madrid, a visa, insurance and tips, one traveller pays about EUR 2,860 to EUR 3,920 on Budget, EUR 3,680 to EUR 4,640 on Standard travelling alone and EUR 6,010 to EUR 7,020 on Luxury.

Presupuesto: the whole trip in euros

One person per row. The flight column is the low and high Madrid fare, and the next one adds the 30-day visa, insurance, tips, and either trail meals on Budget or spending money on the other two tiers. Kathmandu hotels are quoted separately in every tier; our own family homestay is US$15 per person per night, about EUR 10.

Trail costs: on Budget you buy your own meals at US$25 to US$40 a day, so US$300 to US$480. Standard and Luxury include meals, and NPR 20,000 to 30,000 (US$130 to US$195) covers showers, charging and snacks. Take rupees from Kathmandu, as the Namche ATMs are often empty.

Madrid to Kathmandu: through China, Qatar or Dubai

No nonstop exists in the results. I priced economy with a checked bag, leaving Sunday 25 October 2026 and flying home Wednesday 11 November, allowing one stop each way.

The cheapest, EUR 1,100, was Sichuan Airlines out via Chengdu and Qatar Airways home via Doha. You leave Madrid at 11:05 and land in Kathmandu at 10:30 the next day, about 18 hours 40 minutes, and home takes 15 hours 45 minutes. The same outbound with a later Qatar return was EUR 1,163. Qatar both ways was EUR 1,357, but the outbound had a long wait in Doha and took about 29 hours. Emirates out via Dubai with Qatar home ran EUR 1,545 to EUR 1,705, and Etihad out via Abu Dhabi with Qatar home EUR 1,646 to EUR 1,709. A Sichuan outbound with Turkish Airlines home via Istanbul ran EUR 1,519 to EUR 1,833, and with Cathay Pacific home via Hong Kong EUR 1,583.

That is a range of EUR 1,100 to EUR 1,833. A connection in Chengdu means checking China's transit rules for your passport before you buy. I priced Madrid only; Barcelona and Valencia travellers should search their own airport.

Visado: you buy it when you land

Con pasaporte español, the visa is bought at Kathmandu airport on arrival. The Department of Immigration fees are US$30 (15 days), US$50 (30 days, about EUR 40) and US$125 (90 days), payable in US dollars. You can apply online first. Passports normally need six months of validity and you bring one photo. Spain is not among the 12 nationalities that need a visa in advance. See the visa on arrival guide.

Seguro de viaje: what the policy must say

La Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea gives no cover in Nepal and never pays for a helicopter. Buy a seguro de viaje in Spain before you fly, not in Nepal.

In the conditions, find trekking to 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545 m), helicopter rescue and evacuation, illness as well as accident, and repatriation. General policies often cap altitude at 3,000 or 4,000 metres or treat trekking as an adventure sport needing an extension. If you hold a hill-walking federation licence, ask whether it extends to Nepal at this height. A Base Camp to Kathmandu helicopter costs US$3,000 to US$5,000, about EUR 2,650 to EUR 4,450. What each package includes

Budget: your own pack, shared rooms, no meals, fixed-wing flight to Lukla. Standard: all meals, private rooms, one porter between two. Luxury: your own porter, private deluxe ensuite, fruit, nuts and soft drinks, helicopter both ways. Every tier includes a licensed guide, permits (Sagarmatha NPR 3,000, Khumbu NPR 3,000, TIMS NPR 2,000), airport transfers and a loaned down jacket and sleeping bag to minus 15. Is it hard, and how do you prepare?

Mulhacén (3,479 m) and Teide (3,715 m) are the nearest things to a rehearsal, and a Camino fitness base helps your legs. We grade the trek strenuous: five to seven hours a day, a night at Gorak Shep (5,164 m), and two acclimatisation days built in. Read how fit you need to be.

The Spanish August problem, and better dates

Spain takes its holidays in August, and August is monsoon in Nepal: June to mid-September is the wet season, with heavy cloud and disrupted mountain flights. So the best Spanish windows are different. Semana Santa 2027 has Holy Thursday on 25 March and Good Friday on 26 March, with Easter Sunday on 28 March, which opens a spring trek in the late-March and April season. In autumn, a trek from mid-October runs into the clear weeks; 12 October was the national holiday this year, and the bridge around 6 and 8 December is cold at altitude. In Nepal, Dashain is 17 to 23 October and Tihar 8 to 12 November 2026, when offices close; permits need 48 hours in government working days.

Nepal is 3 hours 45 minutes ahead of Madrid until the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, and 4 hours 45 minutes after.

Reserve the date with a 10 per cent deposit; the rest is due in Kathmandu in dollars or euros, in cash (no surcharge) or by card (plus 3.5 per cent). Nepali rupees are not accepted. Plans change? You can move the trip free to any date in the next year if you give 72 hours (seven days for Tibet, Kailash and restricted areas). The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel. Should we be unable to run it, we return what you paid minus taxes, bank or card charges and sums already spent on permits and flights.
