Thamdanda and Surke: The Road Head for Everest Base Camp by Road
Updated 19 October 2026.
Short answer: Thamdanda (about 2,300 m) is the road head in lower Solukhumbu where our 15-day Everest Base Camp trek by road begins and ends on foot. It is not a place to stay. It is where the jeep stops and the trail starts. On day 2 we drive from Salleri and Phaplu to Thamdanda, walk up to Paiya (about 2,730 m) and sleep there. On the way back, the jeep waits for us near Surke and Thamdanda after a day's walk down from Chheplung.
I am Shreejan. People ask me about this road head because they find "Thamdanda" or "Surke" in an itinerary and cannot find it in any guidebook. Here is what it is, how you reach it and why I like starting here.
Where is Thamdanda?
Thamdanda is on the southern approach to Everest, in the Solukhumbu district, south of the Lukla trail. It sits on the jeep road that runs on from Phaplu and Salleri. From the road head a trail climbs into forest and leads to Paiya and then Phakding, where it joins the classic Everest Base Camp route. For the town you drive through first, read my Phaplu and Salleri guide.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Place | Thamdanda, a road head in lower Solukhumbu |
| Altitude | About 2,300 m (7,546 ft) |
| Used on | Day 2 (start of the walk) and day 14 (end of the walk) |
| From Phaplu or Salleri | About 75 km off-road by local jeep, 5 to 6 hours on our itinerary |
| First walk | Thamdanda to Paiya, about 4 to 5 km, 1 to 2 hours, up to about 2,730 m |
| Lodging at the road head | None needed. We sleep in Paiya and in Phaplu |
The altitudes and distances come from the trip page and are approximate.
How do you get to Thamdanda?
Day 1 is a drive from Kathmandu to Salleri and Phaplu (Phaplu is about 2,413 m), about 264 km and 9 to 10 hours. On day 2 you leave early on a local jeep. The itinerary gives 5 to 6 hours for the 75 km of road from there to Thamdanda. The road is rough, and your guide arranges the jeep. The drive is slow, but you see the lower Solukhumbu hills, terraced fields and the monastery above Phaplu.
Compare this with the flight to Lukla. The flight takes about 30 minutes, and it depends on weather. The road takes a full day, and it does not depend on a runway. I explain the choice in Lukla flight vs the road to Everest Base Camp and in Ramechhap vs Lukla.
What do you do at Thamdanda?
You get out of the jeep, and you walk. The first walk, from Thamdanda to Paiya, is short: about 4 to 5 km and 1 to 2 hours, with a climb of about 400 m. It is a gentle start after a day in a vehicle. The trail goes through forest and small villages. Paiya itself sits at about 2,730 m in a quiet valley. My trail guide to Paiya says more about it.
What about Surke?
On day 14 the trek comes down from Namche Bazaar to Chheplung (about 2,660 m on the trip page) and then on to the road head. The itinerary writes "Surke/Thamdanda" because the jeep meets us near the two. The walk on this last day is short, about 6 to 8 km. After that you drive to Phaplu, where the itinerary says 5 to 6 hours. Day 15 is the long drive back to Kathmandu, 266 km and 10 to 12 hours.
| Day | What happens | Sleep |

| 3 | Paiya to Phakding, joining the classic route | About 2,610 m |
| 13 | Namche Bazaar to Chheplung | About 2,660 m |
| 14 | Walk to Surke or Thamdanda, drive to Phaplu | Lodge, about 2,413 m |
| 15 | Drive Phaplu to Kathmandu | Your hotel |
The full 15-day plan is on the Everest Base Camp trek by road page. Days 4 to 12 are the normal Everest Base Camp route, with rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.
Who is the road start for?
It suits trekkers who dislike the Lukla flight, who want a quieter first two days and who have a week or more to spare. It is slower and costs more days, but you avoid flight cancellations. It does not suit people with a tight schedule. If you want to start even lower, read about the Jiri route and Nunthala and Jiri to Everest Base Camp compared with Lukla.
What does the road trip cost for 2027?
These are the prices on the trip page today, in US dollars per person. The price falls as the group grows.
| Group size | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (solo) | 1,780 | 3,290 | 4,999 |

The Sagarmatha National Park permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee and the TIMS card are in every tier, and so are the road transport and the guide. Budget has no porter and no meals. Standard has one porter for every two trekkers and all meals. Luxury has a porter for each trekker. A solo trekker on Standard has no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your bag. Kathmandu hotels are not in any tier.

How long is the drive from Phaplu to Thamdanda? About 75 km off-road. Our itinerary gives 5 to 6 hours by local jeep.
Is Surke the same as Thamdanda? They are close together. Our itinerary writes "Surke/Thamdanda" for the road head at the end of the walk, where the jeep meets us.
Do I sleep in Thamdanda? No. On the way in we sleep in Paiya, and on the way out in Phaplu.
Can I reach Everest Base Camp without flying to Lukla? Yes. This road trip is one way. It takes 15 days and avoids the Lukla flight.
Is the road start cheaper than flying? Not always. It needs more days, and I quote the price on the trip page. Compare the two before you decide.
Do I need travel insurance? Yes, bought at home. The highest point is Kala Patthar at about 5,545 m, so ask for cover to 6,000 m with helicopter evacuation.
What if the road is blocked? The road can be closed by landslides, especially in the monsoon. I check it before you leave Kathmandu, and I tell you what I find.
