What Everest Base Camp really costs from Greece, in US dollars and euros: package price by tier, an Athens one-stop flight snapshot (no nonstop found), the visa question, EHIC limits, trail costs, Greek leave and holiday dates, and a full budget table.

Last updated 5 October 2026. Trek facts are from our own website. Flight facts are from a Kiwi.com search I read on 5 October 2026 for one Athens to Kathmandu return. Permit fees use the Nepal Tourism Board park-fee page. Trek prices are in US dollars and the US dollar is the price you pay. Euro figures are approximate at EUR 1 = USD 1.1225, the ECB reference rate for 2 October 2026 via Frankfurter API, and the rate moves.

I run The Everest Holiday in Kathmandu. We registered the company in 2016 and I come from three generations of family guides. Our 12-day Everest Base Camp trek costs US$1,399 Budget, US$2,499 Standard and US$4,999 Luxury per person for 1 to 4 trekkers, about EUR 1,250, EUR 2,230 and EUR 4,450. These prices hold for 2027 departures and the deposit is 10 per cent with the balance on arrival in Kathmandu.

The cheapest flight snapshot I found was EUR 727, about US$816, for Athens to Kathmandu leaving 19 October 2026 and returning 5 November 2026 with one change each way. With a 30-day visa at US$50, trail meals on Budget, tips and basic insurance, the lowest total I can build is about US$2,795 on Budget, US$3,595 on Standard (solo) and US$6,215 on Luxury, about EUR 2,490, EUR 3,200 and EUR 5,540 for one person. The full cost section below shows every line. Kathmandu hotel, showers and charging and wifi on the trail, card charge and delays sit outside those sums.

Below I show what I found on that one day so you can plan door-to-door from Greece. Flight numbers and fares change, so treat them as a snapshot and check again before you pay. If you want me directly, my WhatsApp is +977 9810351300. I answer it myself. Nepal is on UTC+5:45 all year. Athens is on UTC+3 in summer time and UTC+2 in winter, so Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead until the clocks go back in Europe on Sunday 25 October 2026, and 3 hours 45 minutes ahead after that. A message you send at 9 am in Athens before the change arrives at 11:45 in Kathmandu.

Our Europe representative: Shradha Simkhada, based in Finland. Prefer to talk to someone in Europe, in a time zone close to yours? Finland is on the same clock as Greece. Phone and WhatsApp: +358 45 353 8606 (message on WhatsApp). She works with us on everything European. Please write or message her in English.

Is there a direct flight from Athens to Kathmandu?

No. On the day I searched there were 0 nonstop results for Athens to Kathmandu. The same search with at most one change each way gave 15 itineraries. Every option I saw changed planes once each way, in Sharjah, Delhi or Doha. I searched 1 adult in economy, return leaving 19 October 2026 and returning 5 November 2026, with a cabin bag plus one checked bag and no self-transfer.

If a nonstop matters to you, search again for your own dates. I ran no spring search, so I cannot speak for other seasons.

What did the flights actually cost on one day?

Each flight number below is a one-day snapshot from my Kiwi.com search on 5 October 2026. Kiwi.com showed fares in EUR. USD figures are EUR x 1.1225 and are approximate. Kiwi.com does not give baggage weights and does not show every airline. I did not open airline sites. Total times are both directions including waiting.

The cheapest is not the fastest. Time is what you pay for. EUR 417 more, that is 1,144 minus 727, saves about 7 h 40 min on these options. Arrival times in Kathmandu vary from 08:05 to 19:50, which matters for your first night and your trek start.

The cheapest fare lands at 08:05 on Tuesday 20 October, inside the Dashain holiday of 17 to 23 October 2026. Government offices and many shops close then. The Delhi layover on the cheapest fare home is about 7 h 40 min overnight, Delhi 22:30 to 06:10. I have not read the transit rules for a Greek passport in Sharjah, Delhi or Doha, so I could not confirm whether you may leave the transit area or need a visa for any of them. Ask the airline in writing before you choose. Some itineraries combine different airlines, and I could not confirm from the Kiwi.com result how each ticket is protected if the first flight runs late, so ask before you buy. For the mountain flights after you land, see my flights guide.

How much does a trek package to Everest Base Camp cost?

Our Everest Base Camp 12 days price is per person. It is the same price for a private trip or a group trip. Discount is by group size only. We never add strangers to a private booking. For full detail see my cost guide and the itinerary day by day.

Budget means no porter so you carry your own bag, shared rooms, meals not included, and fixed-wing flight to Lukla. Standard means 1 porter per 2 trekkers, private rooms, all meals, and fixed-wing flight. Luxury means a dedicated 1:1 porter, private deluxe ensuite room, all meals plus fruit, nuts and unlimited soft drinks, and round-trip helicopter between Kathmandu and Lukla. I explain when the helicopter pays off in helicopter return cost.

Every tier includes a licensed guide, all permits, Kathmandu airport pick-up and drop-off, teahouse nights, first-aid kit and pulse oximeter, and farewell dinner. No tier includes the international flight, Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, or Kathmandu hotels. Kathmandu hotels are quoted separately and our own family homestay is US$15 per person per night, about EUR 13. Things you buy on the trail are also outside the price. We provide a down jacket and a minus 15 sleeping bag free on every tier.

Lukla sits at 2,860 m. Fixed-wing Kathmandu to Lukla is about US$253 one way and about US$506 return, about EUR 225 and EUR 451. A shared helicopter seat is about US$640 Kathmandu to Lukla, about EUR 570, and about US$710 Lukla to Kathmandu, about EUR 633, including tax and fuel supplement, subject to availability and weather.

Do you need a guide, and what does a porter cost?

A licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card are required on most trekking routes under the Nepal Tourism Board rule from 31 March 2023; the Everest (Khumbu) region does not enforce it locally, but we always trek with a licensed guide.

I say this plainly because the rule confuses many trekkers. You can read the longer answer in can you trek without a guide and the single supplement rules in solo cost and single supplement. We always send a licensed guide and we check your insurance before departure.

Porter rules follow the tier. Luxury solo still gets a dedicated porter. Standard solo has no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. Budget never has a porter. On EBC the guide joins from Lukla, so there is no single supplement. A Standard porter load is about 20 kg shared between two trekkers. If you want an extra porter it is US$25 a day, about EUR 22, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top.

How much luggage can you take to Lukla?

Plan on about 10 kg checked plus 5 kg hand carry on mountain flights. Every airline sets its own limit. No airline publishes a Lukla excess rate. Extra bags may fly later. Leave the rest at your Kathmandu hotel.

Flights are about 20 minutes from Manthali and about 40 minutes from Kathmandu. In busy windows, about 15 March to 15 May and 25 September to 30 November, fixed-wing flights leave from Manthali at Ramechhap. That means a four to five hour drive with hotel pick-up between midnight and 2 am. I explain the airport move in Manthali airport guide.

What permits do you need, and are they included?

Yes, they are included. We arrange and pay them in every tier. You need three things for this route. Sagarmatha National Park NPR 3,000 plus Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee NPR 3,000 plus TIMS card NPR 2,000. That is NPR 8,000 in total, about US$52 at NPR 154.3 per US dollar from open.er-api.com on 5 October 2026, about EUR 46.

The park fee is from the Nepal Tourism Board park-fee page, and we check every fee again before your trek. For the full list see EBC permits and fees and Nepal permits guide. Permits need at least 48 hours in government working days, so tell us your dates early.

Do Greek passport holders need a visa for Nepal?

Yes, a tourist visa, and you can get it on arrival. I read the Nepal Department of Immigration pages on 5 October 2026, and the general rule says all other passport holders may obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, except citizens of 12 listed countries. Greece is not among those 12. The 12 are Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Syria.

I have to be honest about one limit here. Greece is not named anywhere on the pages I read. The exemption page covers diplomatic, official and service passports only for 15 countries, and Greece is not on it. So an ordinary Greek passport falls under the general rule, but I cannot show you a line naming Greece. I could not confirm it on a Greek government page either. If you want certainty, ask the Department in writing before you fly.

The fees on the Department pages are 15 days US$30 (about EUR 27), 30 days US$50 (about EUR 45) and 90 days US$125 (about EUR 111). Thirty days covers a 12-day trek with spare days in Kathmandu either side. The Department page says you can apply online before arrival and also at Kathmandu airport. A visa obtained from a mission must be used within six months of issue. Maximum tourist stay is 150 days per visa year, January to December. An extension costs US$3 a day.

My advice is simple. Apply online before you fly, print the receipt, and carry some US dollars cash for the fee. The on arrival process page says the receipt is valid for 15 days. I did not confirm the passport-validity rule on the Department's pages this time, so check your passport's expiry date against its current guidance before you book. You can read our step-by-step notes in Nepal e-visa guide and Nepal visa on arrival guide.

Does your European health card cover you in Nepal?

No. Your European Health Insurance Card gives you no cover in Nepal at all. I read the EU Your Europe page on temporary stays, last checked 16 September 2026. It says the card covers unplanned treatment during temporary stays in other EU countries, with the same rights as people insured in that country.

Nepal is not an EU country. The same page says, “Your EHIC does not cover private healthcare. You can only use it for healthcare from providers that are part of the public system.” And on rescue it says, “Your EHIC will not help you with rescue and repatriation - for transport home after falling seriously ill or after having an accident while visiting another EU country, you will need separate insurance cover.”

For Everest Base Camp you need proper cover bought at home. You need trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter rescue and evacuation for illness as well as accident, confirmed in writing before you buy. A helicopter evacuation from Base Camp to Kathmandu costs US$3,000 to US$5,000 (about EUR 2,670 to 4,450). We check your policy before departure. Our cost guide gives three bands for two to three weeks. Basic trekking cover to 6,000 m is US$50 to 100 (about EUR 45 to 90). Full travel plus trekking is US$100 to 180 (about EUR 90 to 160). Premium with cancellation is US$150 to 250 (about EUR 135 to 220). I have not read what the Greek public health insurer, a private insurer, an employer plan or a card benefit pays for treatment outside the EU, so I could not confirm it. Ask in writing. Read what coverage you need in Nepal and helicopter cover to 6,000 m before you pay.

What will you spend on the trail?

It depends on your tier. On Budget, meals are not included, so you pay for food each day. Allow US$25 to 40 a day, or US$300 to 480 for 12 days (about EUR 267 to 428). On Standard and Luxury, all meals are included, so you only need spending money for showers, charging, wifi, snacks and tips. I suggest NPR 20,000 to 30,000 (US$130 to 195).

Bring that money from Kathmandu in rupees. The only cash machines on the route are in Namche and they are often empty. Prices rise as you climb because everything is carried up the trail. Dal bhat is NPR 500 to 600 (US$4 to 5) around Lukla to Namche, NPR 600 to 800 (US$5 to 6) from Namche to Dingboche, and NPR 800 to 1,000 (US$6 to 8) above Dingboche. You can read why we like it in dal bhat guide.

Tea and coffee are NPR 80 to 100 lower down, NPR 100 to 150 in the middle, and NPR 150 to 250 (US$1.20 to 2) high up. Bottled water for one litre is NPR 150 to 200 low, NPR 200 to 300 in the middle, and NPR 300 to 500 (US$2.50 to 4) high. Wifi per device is NPR 200 to 300 below Namche and NPR 300 to 500 above. Charging is free to NPR 200 lower down, then NPR 200 to 500. A hot shower is NPR 200 to 300 low, then NPR 300 to 500 or more high. Laundry is NPR 300 to 500 a kilo, and not available above Namche. An Everest Link wifi card in Namche is NPR 500 to 1,000.

A day at the top of the route with a shower, one charge, a litre of water and one wifi session is NPR 1,100 to 2,000 (US$7 to 13). That is my own sum from the price list above.

What is the full cost from Greece?

This is the door-to-door figure for one person on the 12-day trek. It uses the cheapest return fare I saw on 5 October 2026, Athens to Kathmandu leaving 19 October 2026 and returning 5 November 2026, at EUR 727 (about US$816). That fare is a one-day snapshot and fares move. It uses a 30 day visa at US$50, tips as below, and insurance at US$50 to 180. The trek prices are in US dollars. That is the price you pay. Euro figures are approximate at EUR 1 equals USD 1.1225 on 2 October 2026, and the rate moves.

For Budget, the low total is trek US$1,399 plus flight US$816 plus visa US$50 plus meals US$300 plus guide tip US$180 plus insurance US$50, which is US$2,795. The high total is 1,399 plus 816 plus 50 plus meals 480 plus tip 240 plus insurance 180, which is US$3,165. About EUR 2,490 to 2,820.

For Standard solo, with no porter and meals included, the low total is 2,499 plus 816 plus 50 plus tip 180 plus insurance 50, which is US$3,595. The high is 2,499 plus 816 plus 50 plus tip 240 plus insurance 180, which is US$3,785. About EUR 3,200 to 3,370.

For Luxury, the low total is 4,999 plus 816 plus 50 plus tip 300 plus insurance 50, which is US$6,215. The high is 4,999 plus 816 plus 50 plus tip 420 plus insurance 180, which is US$6,465. About EUR 5,540 to 5,760.

Tier, one personLow US$High US$Approx EUR

Standard solo, no porter3,5953,7853,200 to 3,370
Luxury6,2156,4655,540 to 5,760

Tips in these totals are lead guide US$15 to 20 a day, or US$180 to 240 over 12 days (about EUR 160 to 214), plus porter US$10 to 15 a day, or US$120 to 180 (about EUR 107 to 160). Luxury guide plus porter together is US$300 to 420 (about EUR 267 to 374). Given at the end in Kathmandu.

Not in the totals are Kathmandu hotel, showers, charging and wifi up to about US$150 more (about EUR 134), the card charge, and delays. Our own family homestay is US$15 per person per night (about EUR 13), quoted separately. You can pay the balance on arrival in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients. Read the full breakdown in our cost guide and the package in Everest Base Camp 12 days.

What else costs money that no package price shows?

The package covers the trek itself. Every tier includes a licensed guide, all permits, Kathmandu airport pick-up and drop-off, teahouse nights, first-aid kit and pulse oximeter, and farewell dinner. We also provide a down jacket and minus 15 sleeping bag free on every tier. But no tier includes the international flight, the Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, Kathmandu hotels, or things bought on the trail.

In practice that means four extras to plan for. First, the flight from Greece and the-visa. Second, insurance bought at home with trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter rescue for illness as well as accident. Third, tips for guide and porter, paid at the end in Kathmandu. Fourth, trail spending for showers, charging, wifi, snacks and water, plus Kathmandu hotel nights before and after the trek.

Two more points catch people out. If you pay by card, add 3.5 per cent. If weather or flights slip, you may need extra hotel nights and meals.

Does it get cheaper as a group?

Yes. Same price for private or group. Discount is by group size only. We never add strangers to a private booking. Prices hold for 2027 departures. Deposit is 10 per cent, with the balance on arrival in Kathmandu.

Group sizeBudget US$Standard US$Luxury US$

9 to 121,1992,3994,899
13 to 209992,3494,849

In approximate euros, that is Budget about EUR 1,250, 1,160, 1,070 and 890 as the group grows. Standard about EUR 2,230, 2,180, 2,140 and 2,090. Luxury about EUR 4,450, 4,410, 4,360 and 4,320. Euro figures are approximate and the rate moves.

Solo is a special case. Luxury solo still gets a dedicated porter. Standard solo has no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. Budget never has one. On Everest Base Camp solo there is no single supplement because the guide joins from Lukla. If you want your own carrier, an extra porter is US$25 a day (about EUR 22) plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top. A porter load is about 20 kg shared between two Standard trekkers. See Everest Base Camp 12 days and solo cost and single supplement.

How many days off do you need?

I plan you door-to-door at 19 calendar days for the autumn dates I priced, 19 October to 6 November. That is 15 weekdays. Wednesday 28 October is Ohi Day, a Greek public holiday, so the count falls to about 14 working days if you work Monday to Friday. That count is mine, not a legal ruling, and you should agree the exact days with your employer.

On leave rules, I read the Greek Ministry of Labour page in Greek on 5 October 2026. The translation is mine. It says annual leave with pay is increased by one working day for each year of service after the first, up to 26 working days on a six day week or 22 on a five day week. It says a worker with 10 years with the same employer or 12 years in any job is entitled to more, and the page says 30. I did not verify the five day figure for that higher band, and I could not confirm the first year base figures. Leave must be agreed with the employer.

Ohi Day marks the Greek refusal of the Italian ultimatum in 1940. I read that on Wikipedia on 5 October 2026, so treat it as secondary. The same page lists 1 January, 6 January, 25 March, 1 May, 15 August, 28 October, 25 December and 26 December, plus Clean Monday, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Whit Monday on the Orthodox calendar. It says holidays on a Sunday are not usually moved, except 1 May.

For spring planning, Orthodox Easter 2027 is Sunday 2 May 2027 by my own calculation, so Good Friday is 30 April and Easter Monday is 3 May 2027. This is my calculation, not a source quote, so check the official calendar before you book leave.

For calls and messages, Athens is on EEST, UTC plus 3, until 01:00 UTC on Sunday 25 October 2026, then EET, UTC plus 2. Nepal is UTC plus 5:45 all year. So Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Athens until 25 October and 3 hours 45 minutes ahead after. A 09:00 message in Athens is 11:45 in Kathmandu before the change and 12:45 after. Finland, where our Europe representative lives, is on the same clock as Greece.

Does Nepal close for Dashain and Tihar?

For government offices, yes. Nepal's government publishes its holidays each year in the Nepal Gazette. The notice for 2083 gives Ghatasthapana on 11 October 2026, Dashain holiday 17 to 23 October 2026, Tihar 8 to 12 November 2026 and Chhath on 15 November 2026. Government offices and many shops close on those days.

That matters for your timing. The cheapest autumn fare I priced lands in Kathmandu at 08:05 on Tuesday 20 October, inside the Dashain holiday. Our airport pick-up is included in every tier, but permits need at least 48 hours in government working days and we arrange and pay them. So I would start the trek the day after landing and keep spare days at the end, which also helps if a flight slips by a day. The flight home on 5 November leaves three days before Tihar begins.

When should you go, autumn or spring?

October is the most reliable month and the busiest. Mid-November into early December is cold at night, very clear and quieter. March and April are warmer, with rhododendrons in flower, and are the second busiest season. June to mid-September is the monsoon. Our best time guide has the month-by-month detail.

I priced autumn only. I ran one Athens to Kathmandu search on 5 October 2026 for 19 October to 5 November, and no spring search was run, so I cannot quote spring fares here.

What I can say from our own operation is that the busy windows are about 15 March to 15 May and 25 September to 30 November. In those windows the fixed-wing flights to Lukla leave from Manthali in Ramechhap, not Kathmandu. That means hotel pick up between midnight and 2 am and a four to five hour drive, then a flight of about 20 minutes from Manthali against about 40 minutes from Kathmandu. Luxury uses the helicopter both ways instead.

Autumn 2026 overlaps Dashain, as above. Spring 2027 includes the Orthodox Easter weekend I calculated, 30 April to 3 May 2027, but check the official calendar. Our trek prices hold for 2027 departures, in US dollars. The dollar is the price you pay and euro figures are approximate, and the rate moves.

Is Everest Base Camp hard, and can a beginner do it?

I grade this trek as strenuous. Plan on five to seven hours walking a day, day after day, above 5,300 m at Base Camp. Mount Everest is 8,848.86 m on the 2020 survey. Lukla itself is 2,860 m, so you are high from day one.

A healthy beginner who trains first can do it, but it is not a walk. Acclimatisation days are built into our itinerary. Read how fit you need to be and where people struggle on the altitude profile before you decide.

Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and first-aid kit, not bottled oxygen. A canister can be arranged at cost. Altitude, not technique, is what stops people, so walk slowly and tell the guide about every headache. A licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card are required on most trekking routes under the Nepal Tourism Board rule from 31 March 2023; the Everest (Khumbu) region does not enforce it locally, but we always trek with a licensed guide.

How do you pay from Greece?

You pay the trek in US dollars. The euro figures I give are approximate at EUR 1 to USD 1.1225 on 2 October 2026, and the rate moves. You pay a 10 per cent deposit to hold the dates and the balance on arrival in Kathmandu. You can pay the balance in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.

On terms, the deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel there is no refund. We offer free rescheduling, with at least 72 hours' notice (seven days for restricted-area, Tibet and Kailash trips), to any date within one year. If we cannot run the trip we refund what you paid less taxes, bank and card charges and any money already spent on permits and flights.

Our own family homestay in Kathmandu is US$15 per person per night, about EUR 13, quoted separately. Kathmandu hotels are not included in any trek tier. If you add an extra porter it is US$25 a day, about EUR 22, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge on top.

Quick answers for Greece

How many days away is it? I plan 19 calendar days for the autumn example, with 12 days on the trek and spare days in Kathmandu. Leave is about 14 working days for a Monday to Friday worker because 28 October is a holiday. That count is mine.

Does 28 October help? It is a Wednesday in 2026 and a public holiday, so if you work Monday to Friday and are away that day it should not need a leave day. Check with your employer. My Orthodox Easter 2027 date is my own calculation, so check the official calendar.

What is the time difference? Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Athens until 25 October 2026 and 3 hours 45 minutes ahead after. A 09:00 message from Athens before the change reaches me at 11:45.

Do Dashain and Tihar affect my trip? Government offices and many shops close, and permits need at least 48 hours in government working days, so tell us your dates early.

Is spring cheaper than autumn? I could not confirm. I priced autumn fares only and ran no spring search.

Can a beginner do Base Camp? A fit beginner can, with training. It is strenuous, five to seven hours a day, with nights above 5,300 m at the top. Acclimatisation days are built in.

Do I pay in euros? We bill in US dollars, but you can pay the balance in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent and cash in Kathmandu carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees. My euro figures are approximate and the rate moves.

How much is the deposit? Ten per cent. It is non-refundable, and there is no refund if you cancel. We offer free rescheduling with at least 72 hours' notice to any date within one year.

Are permits and guide included? Yes, in every tier. I arrange and pay the park fee, the rural municipality fee and TIMS, and a licensed guide walks with you.

What is not in the package? International flights, Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, Kathmandu hotels and anything you buy on the trail. Budget tier meals are not included. Standard and Luxury include meals.

Who do I check before I pay? Check our company registration, TAAN 1586, Department of Tourism licence and forex certification, then read our reviews. Write to me first if anything is unclear.

If you want the numbers run for your dates and group size, message me or Shradha on WhatsApp, or email [email protected]. I will give you the real figure, including the parts that are not in our favour. We have run the same sums for other European countries too: Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Portugal, the Czech Republic and the UK.

About The Everest Holiday

We are a family company in Kathmandu, three generations of family guides, registered in 2016 and a member of the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal, number 1586. When you book with us you deal with the family, not a call centre, and the guide who meets you at the airport works for the same people who answered your first message.

Every booking helps fund our Nagarjun Learning Center. We fully run the centre at Saldum, where 70 children learn with a teacher I pay for personally, and we have helped build and still support other community learning centres. It is where a real part of what you pay ends up.
