What does the Everest Base Camp trek cost from Romania? Trek prices in US dollars and lei, a snapshot of flights from Bucharest, the visa, insurance and the full cost for one person.

Last updated 10 October 2026. The trek prices below are taken from our booking system. For the leu figures I used the European Central Bank reference rate of 9 October 2026, when 1 euro bought 1.1206 US dollars or 5.34 Romanian lei, which makes 1 US dollar about 4.77 lei. Airfares change daily; treat the ones here as a single day's snapshot.

Short answer: per person, Everest Base Camp over 12 days is US$1,399 (Budget), US$2,499 (Standard) or US$4,999 (Luxury), roughly RON 6,670, RON 11,910 or RON 23,820. Add a Bucharest return, which ran from RON 5,594 to RON 7,358 for 18 April to 5 May 2027, and a US$50 visa. One traveller on Budget, paying for the visa and the trail meals, should expect about RON 13,930 to RON 16,550, not counting insurance and tips.

From Bucharest, Cluj or Timisoara the plan is the same: a change of plane in the Gulf, twelve days on the trail, and a bill that is partly in dollars and partly in lei. The trek price I can give you to the dollar. The flight I can only show as a snapshot. You pay us in US dollars or euros, never in lei, so each leu figure below will shift with the exchange rate.

The route is on our Everest Base Camp Trek, 12 Days page. If you prefer to talk, my WhatsApp is +977 9810351300 and I answer it myself.

Is there a nonstop flight from Romania to Kathmandu?

None appeared. All 15 itineraries in my search from Bucharest Henri Coanda had one change of plane in each direction, through Dubai on flydubai or through Doha on Qatar Airways outbound, with flydubai bringing everyone home through Dubai. Romania is in Eastern European Time, so in summer Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Bucharest and in winter 3 hours 45 minutes ahead.

What did the flights cost on one day?

The search was run on 10 October 2026 in lei: economy, a single adult, leaving Bucharest on Sunday 18 April 2027 and returning on Wednesday 5 May, one ticket, no more than one stop in either direction. It produced 15 itineraries from RON 5,594 to RON 7,358 (about EUR 1,047 to EUR 1,378). The hours are the total of both directions, waiting time included.

Home 5 May 15:35, Bucharest 01:20 the next dayRON 5,594The cheapest, and the shortest of the fares at that price, about 23 hours 45 minutes in total. Several other flydubai times cost the same, up to about 30 hours 30 minutes
BucharestQatar Airways via Doha out, 18 April 17:10, Kathmandu 16:45 on the 19th. flydubai home via Dubai, 5 May 15:35RON 7,102About 33 hours 20 minutes in total, because the Doha connection waits overnight

Each of the fares came with a cabin bag, a personal item and a checked bag. Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday 2 May in 2027, inside the dates I searched, so a different week may be priced differently. Land in Kathmandu a full day before any Lukla flight, and keep a spare day at the end.

What does the trek cost in lei?

The prices are the ones in our booking system. A 2027 departure costs the same as a 2026 one, and a private trek costs the same per person as a group trek for parties of one to four.

BudgetUS$1,399about RON 6,670
StandardUS$2,499about RON 11,910
LuxuryUS$4,999about RON 23,820

In practice the tiers differ like this. Budget: your own bag, shared rooms, trail meals bought by you. Standard: meals paid, private rooms, one porter per two trekkers, which means that if you travel alone the guide takes up to 10 kg. Luxury: a porter just for you, a deluxe private room with a bathroom, fruit, nuts and unlimited soft drinks, and helicopter flights to Lukla and back.

Whichever tier you pick, you get a licensed guide, the park and local permits, pick-up and drop-off at Kathmandu airport, the teahouse nights, and a first aid kit with a pulse oximeter. You arrange and pay for the flight, the visa, insurance, tips and Kathmandu hotels; our family homestay is US$15 per person per night, and part of that supports the learning centre my family runs. The permits total about NPR 8,000 (Sagarmatha National Park NPR 3,000, Khumbu local fee NPR 3,000, TIMS card NPR 2,000) and we buy them on your behalf. The Everest Base Camp cost guide has every line of the price.

What is the whole bill for one person?

The next table is for one traveller walking all twelve days and flying from Bucharest at the cheapest and dearest fares above. Extras means the 30-day visa plus spending on the trail: meals on Budget, roughly US$300 to US$480 over the trek (US$25 to US$40 a day), and on Standard and Luxury 20,000 to 30,000 rupees (US$130 to US$195) for hot showers, charging and snacks, taken from a Kathmandu cash machine.

I have left insurance, tips and Kathmandu hotels out of the totals deliberately. Tips are expected in Nepal and are part of no price; guides usually receive US$15 to US$20 a day and porters US$10 to US$15, split by the group.

Do Romanians need a visa for Nepal?

Yes, and you can get it on arrival. Romania is not one of the twelve countries whose citizens must apply in advance, so you buy the visa at Kathmandu airport. Your passport needs six months of validity. The fees are US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days (about RON 240) and US$125 for 90 days, all in US dollars. Most trekkers need 30 days. The online arrival form saves time, and an e-Visa with card payment has been possible since 17 August 2026, as explained in our e-Visa guide.

What insurance do you need?

Buy it at home, before you fly. The European Health Insurance Card is valid in Europe only, so it does nothing in Nepal, and national health cover is built for treatment at home. Ask for a policy that names trekking to at least 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545 metres) and helicopter evacuation for illness as well as accident. If you pay for a helicopter yourself it costs US$3,000 to US$5,000, about RON 14,300 to RON 23,830. Get the insurer's confirmation in writing. Our insurance guide goes through the wording.

For help abroad, the published list of foreign missions in Nepal shows Romania's embassy in New Delhi accredited to Nepal, with no resident embassy in Kathmandu. Ask the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm which mission covers you, and keep its emergency number with your passport.

How much leave, and when to go in 2027?

Twelve days is the trek itself. Two days of flying each way and a night or two in Kathmandu bring the absence to 17 or 18 days, plus a spare day in case weather delays the Lukla flight. Your employer can tell you how many days you may take at once. Romania's 2027 holidays give some help: Orthodox Good Friday is 30 April, Easter Sunday 2 May and Easter Monday 3 May, 1 May is a Saturday, 1 June is a Tuesday, Orthodox Pentecost is 20 and 21 June, and 15 August, 30 November and 1 December are public holidays. Spring in Nepal, from March to May, brings rhododendrons on the lower slopes, and October and November give the clearest air. In 2027 Dashain is expected around 6 to 10 October and Tihar around 29 to 31 October, so November is the calm month; see our festival calendar.

A word on altitude. Moldoveanu Peak, the highest in Romania, is 2,545 metres, less than Lukla at 2,860, where the walk starts. Gorak Shep, the highest night on the Everest route, is 5,164 metres. The Carpathians are good for fitness, but they do not train the body for height, which is why the rest days matter.

Questions people ask

Can I pay in lei? Not in lei or rupees. Dollars and euros only, in cash (free) or by card (3.5 per cent more), settled in Kathmandu.

How do I book? You pay a 10 per cent deposit now and the balance in Kathmandu. If you cancel, the deposit is lost and nothing is refunded, but a free move to another date within a year is possible when you give 72 hours notice.

Is it cheaper in a group? Yes, and only because of group size: the per-person price drops as the party grows. The trek page shows the bands.

Is there anyone to talk to in Europe? Yes. Shradha Simkhada, our Europe representative, is based in Finland, which is in the same time zone as Romania. You can call or message her on +358 45 353 8606, WhatsApp included.
