Everest Base Camp Trek Cost from Finland: Euro Prices, Flights, Visa and Insurance

Finnish trekkers have a small advantage over everyone else who reads this page: our European representative, Shradha Simkhada, lives in Finland. Everything else is the same as from anywhere, and the numbers follow. The Everest Holiday has been registered in Kathmandu since 2016, and my family has guided for three generations. For two to four trekkers, the 12-day trek is US$1,399 on Budget (about EUR 1,240), US$2,785 on Standard (about EUR 2,470) and US$4,999 on Luxury (about EUR 4,440) per person, unchanged for 2027. A solo Budget trekker pays US$2,275, about EUR 2,020.

The Helsinki fare is the biggest variable. With it, the visa, insurance and tips, one traveller should plan on about EUR 4,160 to EUR 5,030 on Budget, EUR 4,460 to EUR 5,230 on Standard travelling solo and EUR 6,540 to EUR 7,360 on Luxury.

Helsinki to Kathmandu, priced

Search settings: economy, one adult, one checked bag, outbound Sunday 25 October 2026, return Wednesday 11 November, one change at most each way, one ticket. Twelve itineraries came back and none was nonstop; every one changed at Dubai, Doha or Istanbul.

The cheapest, EUR 1,631, was Emirates via Dubai out (Helsinki 15:45, Kathmandu 14:00 the next day, about 18 hours 30 minutes) and Qatar Airways home via Doha, leaving Kathmandu at 11:05 and arriving in Helsinki at 07:20 the next morning, about 24 hours. Taking the Emirates connection that lands at 08:20 (about 12 hours 50 minutes) with the same return was EUR 1,691. Emirates out with Turkish Airlines home via Istanbul (arrival at 11:20 after about 26 hours 20 minutes) was EUR 1,740 to EUR 1,800.

For a shorter way back, the Qatar flight leaving Kathmandu at 19:00 reaches Helsinki at 07:20, about 16 hours 5 minutes, and cost EUR 1,816 to EUR 1,876 with an Emirates outbound. Turkish out via Istanbul (Helsinki 19:05, Kathmandu 11:20, about 12 hours 30 minutes) was EUR 1,878 to EUR 2,171 and listed a personal item as well as the cabin and checked bags. The Emirates return leaving Kathmandu at 00:30 and landing at 13:55 was EUR 1,933 to EUR 1,993. So the range that day was EUR 1,631 to EUR 2,171.

The full cost for a Finnish traveller

The table is for one person. The flight column spans the lowest and highest Helsinki fare, and the one after it adds up the 30-day visa, insurance, tips, and trail meals (Budget) or spending money (Standard, Luxury). Kathmandu hotels are quoted separately; our own homestay is US$15 a night, about EUR 13.

Meals on the trail are a cost only on Budget, US$25 to US$40 a day, so US$300 to US$480 for 12 days. Standard and Luxury include food, which leaves an amount between NPR 20,000 and 30,000 (US$130 to US$195) for showers, charging, wifi and snacks. Draw rupees in Kathmandu. At the end, tip US$15 to US$20 a day for a guide and US$10 to US$15 a day for a porter.

Visa for Finnish passports

Finnish citizens pay for the tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Immigration lists it at US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days (about EUR 40) and US$125 for 90 days, multiple entry, in US dollars. The online form can be done beforehand, with the receipt printed. Keep six months of validity on the passport and carry a photo. Finland is not on the list of 12 nationalities required to apply in advance. Our visa on arrival guide has the details.

What Kela's card does not cover

The European health insurance card from Kela is valid in Europe, and Nepal is outside it. Finnish travel insurance (matkavakuutus) is easy to buy, though standard versions often cap trekking at modest altitudes or class it as a hazardous activity. Buy the policy in Finland before you fly; we do not recommend buying insurance in Nepal.

The policy should name trekking to 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545 m), helicopter rescue, illness (and not only accidents), and repatriation. Without insurance, a helicopter from Base Camp to Kathmandu costs US$3,000 to US$5,000 (about EUR 2,650 to EUR 4,450). Budget, Standard, Luxury

• Budget: no porter, so you carry your own pack; shared rooms; meals not included; a fixed-wing flight to Lukla.
• Standard: one porter for every two trekkers; private rooms; meals included; fixed-wing flight.
• Luxury: a porter of your own; private deluxe ensuite rooms; meals plus fruit, nuts and soft drinks; helicopter to Lukla and back.

The permits (NPR 3,000, 3,000 and 2,000), a licensed guide, airport transfers and a loaned down jacket and sleeping bag rated to minus 15 are part of each tier. Solo on Standard, there is no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg. On Budget, a solo Everest Base Camp trekker pays US$2,275 instead of US$1,399. Everest Base Camp 12 days.

Finnish fitness and altitude

Halti, the highest point in Finland at about 1,324 m, is under half the height of Lukla (2,860 m), so Finnish hills do not teach you anything about thin air. Long days on foot with a loaded pack do build the legs, and the two acclimatisation days build the rest. Expect five to seven hours of walking most days. Read how fit you need to be.

A private trip and a group trip cost the same per person; only the band changes the price.

Finnish dates and the Nepali calendar

Good Friday is 26 March 2027 and Easter Monday 29 March. Vappu on 1 May falls on a Saturday that year, Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May, and Midsummer Eve is Friday 25 June, though the monsoon is under way by then. Nepali offices close for Dashain (17 to 23 October 2026) and Tihar (8 to 12 November), and a permit needs 48 hours of government working days.

Finnish clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, when the gap to Nepal widens from 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes. During autumn the fixed-wing tiers fly to Lukla from Manthali, reached by a four to five hour drive that starts with a pick-up some time between midnight and 2 am; Luxury flies by helicopter from Kathmandu. Keep a spare day at the end.

Paying us from Finland

Ten per cent holds the date. The balance is paid in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros, cash at no cost or card with 3.5 per cent added. Nepali rupees are not taken from foreign clients. If your plans change, we move the trek at no cost to any date within a year when you give 72 hours' warning (a week for Tibet, Kailash and restricted areas, though). If you cancel instead, the deposit and anything else you have paid are not refunded. If we cannot run the trek, you receive what you paid less taxes, bank or card charges and money already spent.

Finland's embassy

The Embassy of Finland in Kathmandu is at Bansidhar Marg 17, Bishalnagar, and is open Monday to Thursday 8.00 to 16.15 and Friday 8.00 to 13.15. Register your trip with the Finnish foreign ministry's travel notification service before you leave.
