Manaslu Region Treks -- Nepal's Best-Kept Trekking Secret (2026 Guide)

Manaslu is the trek that experienced Nepal trekkers whisper about. It has everything the Annapurna Circuit had twenty years ago -- dramatic passes, remote villages, Tibetan culture, and stunning mountain scenery -- but without the roads, the crowds, or the commercialisation.

The Manaslu region is a restricted area, which means permits are more expensive and you must trek with a licensed guide through a registered agency. That restriction is also what keeps it special. Here's every Manaslu region trek we offer.

The Manaslu Region at a Glance

The Manaslu Conservation Area surrounds Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the eighth highest mountain in the world. The region sits between the Annapurna and Langtang regions in central Nepal. It's home to Tibetan-influenced communities, ancient monasteries, and the Larkya La pass (5,106m) -- one of the most spectacular high passes in the Himalayas.

The area was closed to trekkers until 1991 and remains restricted, requiring a special permit. This has preserved its character in a way that the more accessible regions have lost.

Every Manaslu Trek -- Compared

1. Manaslu Circuit Trek (12 Days)

The classic circuit. Our 12-Day Manaslu Circuit takes you around the Manaslu massif, crossing the Larkya La pass (5,106m). The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki gorge -- one of the deepest valleys in the world -- through terraced farmland, subtropical forests, and high-altitude desert.

Best for: Experienced trekkers wanting a less-crowded alternative to the Annapurna Circuit
Difficulty: Challenging (4/5)
From: $1,399

My take: This is the trek I recommend most to repeat visitors. If you've done EBC and Annapurna and want something different, Manaslu delivers. The Larkya La crossing is physically demanding but the reward -- views of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, and the Annapurna range -- is extraordinary.

2. Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit (19 Days)

The complete experience. Our 19-Day Tsum Valley + Manaslu Circuit adds the sacred Tsum Valley -- a hidden Buddhist valley that was closed to outsiders until 2008. Ancient monasteries, stone mani walls stretching for kilometres, and a Tibetan way of life untouched by modernity.

Best for: Cultural trekkers, those with time for the full experience, Buddhist heritage enthusiasts
Difficulty: Challenging (4/5)
From: $1,799

3. Tsum Valley Trek (16 Days)

Just the valley. Our 16-Day Tsum Valley Trek focuses entirely on the Tsum Valley without crossing the Larkya La. This is a cultural immersion trek through one of Nepal's most remote and spiritually significant regions.

Best for: Those primarily interested in Tibetan Buddhist culture, travellers who prefer cultural depth over high-altitude passes
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
From: $1,499

4. Manaslu with Nar Phu Valley (21 Days)

The grand traverse. Our 21-Day Manaslu + Nar Phu Valley Trek combines the Manaslu Circuit with the restricted Nar Phu Valley -- connecting two of Nepal's most remote trekking areas in a single epic journey.

Best for: Fit, experienced trekkers with 3 weeks available, those wanting maximum remote Nepal exposure
Difficulty: Very Strenuous (4.5/5)
From: $2,199

Quick Comparison

Trek Days Max Altitude Difficulty From
Manaslu Circuit 12 5,106m Challenging $1,399
Tsum Valley 16 3,700m Moderate $1,499
Tsum + Manaslu 19 5,106m Challenging $1,799
Manaslu + Nar Phu 21 5,322m Very Strenuous $2,199

Why Manaslu Over Annapurna?

  • Fewer trekkers. The restricted area permit limits visitor numbers. You might see 5-10 other trekking groups in two weeks versus hundreds on the Annapurna Circuit.

  • No road. The Annapurna Circuit has been partly replaced by a motorable road. Manaslu has none. Every step is on a mountain trail.

  • Cultural authenticity. The Tibetan-influenced villages of the upper Manaslu valley feel genuinely remote and unchanged. Tsum Valley is among the most culturally preserved places in Nepal.

  • The Larkya La. At 5,106m, it's lower than Thorong La (5,416m) but the approach is more dramatic and the pass itself is more photogenic.

Permits and Restrictions

Manaslu and Tsum Valley are restricted areas. The permit costs $100/week in peak season (Sep-Nov) and $75/week at other times. You must trek with a registered agency and a licensed guide -- solo trekking is not permitted. All permits are included in our package prices.

2026 update: Solo trekkers can now obtain restricted area permits (as of March 2026), but must still go through a registered agency with a licensed guide.
