Langtang Region Treks — Nepal's Closest Mountain Escape from Kathmandu (2026 Guide)
Langtang Region Treks -- Nepal's Closest Mountain Escape from Kathmandu (2026 Guide)
Langtang is the trek that Kathmandu locals choose for themselves. While tourists queue at Lukla airport for Everest and drive 6 hours to Pokhara for Annapurna, Nepalis who want a quick mountain fix head north to Langtang -- just 7-8 hours by road from Kathmandu, no flights needed.
The Langtang region offers everything the big-name treks do -- 7,000-metre peaks, sacred lakes, Tibetan Buddhist culture, pristine forests -- at a fraction of the cost and with a fraction of the crowds. Here's every Langtang region trek we offer.
The Langtang Region at a Glance
Langtang National Park sits directly north of Kathmandu, on the Tibetan border. The region was devastated by the 2015 earthquake -- the village of Langtang was buried by a massive landslide, killing over 300 people. Today, the village has been rebuilt, the trails are fully restored, and trekking here directly supports the local Tamang communities who are still recovering.
The region is home to Langtang Lirung (7,227m), the sacred Gosaikunda lakes, and some of Nepal's most beautiful high-altitude valleys.
Every Langtang Trek -- Compared
1. Langtang Valley Trek (8 Days)
The classic Langtang route. Our 8-Day Langtang Valley Trek follows the Langtang Khola river through oak and rhododendron forests to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), with an optional climb of Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (5,033m) for panoramic mountain views.
Best for: Beginners, those wanting a shorter trek close to Kathmandu
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
From: $699
2. Langtang Gosaikunda Trek (13 Days)
Our 13-Day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek combines the Langtang Valley with a pilgrimage to the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes (4,380m) -- 108 alpine lakes sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The trail connects via Laurebina La pass (4,610m).
Best for: Trekkers wanting culture + nature, those interested in Hindu/Buddhist pilgrimage sites
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (3.5/5)
From: $999
3. Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek (12 Days)
The challenging option. Our 12-Day Ganja La Pass Trek crosses the Ganja La (5,122m) -- a technical high pass that connects the Langtang Valley to the Helambu region. This is a serious mountain crossing requiring some scrambling and glacier awareness.
Best for: Experienced trekkers seeking a challenge, those wanting to combine Langtang with Helambu
Difficulty: Strenuous (4/5)
From: $1,199
4. Tamang Heritage Trail (12 Days)
Culture over altitude. Our 12-Day Tamang Heritage Trail explores the Tamang communities of the Langtang region -- traditional stone villages, Buddhist monasteries, and a way of life that has changed little in centuries. This trail was developed specifically to bring tourism income to remote Tamang villages.
Best for: Cultural travellers, photographers, those who prefer village life over summit views
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
From: $899
5. Gosaikunda Trek (5 Days)
The short option. Our 5-Day Gosaikunda Trek goes directly to the sacred lakes without the Langtang Valley. It's one of Nepal's best short treks -- accessible from Kathmandu by road, reaching 4,380m in just a few days.
Best for: Travellers with limited time, pilgrims, those wanting a quick high-altitude experience
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
From: $499

Why Langtang Deserves Your Attention
Three reasons Langtang should be on your shortlist:
-
No flights needed. Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (7-8 hours). No Lukla lottery, no flight cancellations, no $350 domestic airfare.
-
Fewer trekkers. Langtang sees roughly 10% of the traffic that EBC or Annapurna get. You'll have teahouses to yourself and trails without queues.
-
Your trek rebuilds a community. The 2015 earthquake hit Langtang harder than anywhere in Nepal. Trekking here puts money directly into communities still recovering.
