Everest Region Treks — Every Route, Honestly Compared (2026 Guide)
Everest Region Treks -- Every Route, Honestly Compared (2026 Guide)
The Everest region is not just one trek. It's an entire mountain kingdom with half a dozen routes, each offering a completely different experience. Most people know about Everest Base Camp. Fewer know about Gokyo Lakes, the Three Passes, or the historic Jiri approach. And almost nobody knows which route is actually right for them until they've already booked the wrong one.
I'm Shreejan Simkhada, CEO of The Everest Holiday. I've guided in the Khumbu region for over a decade, and here's my honest comparison of every Everest region trek we offer -- including which ones I'd recommend and which ones I'd steer you away from depending on your experience, fitness, and time.
The Everest Region at a Glance
The Everest region (also called the Khumbu or Solukhumbu) sits in north-eastern Nepal, bordering Tibet. It's home to Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The region contains four of the world's six highest mountains: Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m).
The gateway is Lukla airport (2,860m) -- a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu that's famous for being one of the most dramatic landings in aviation. From Lukla, all trails lead upward through Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on Earth.
Every Everest Region Trek -- Compared
1. Classic Everest Base Camp Trek (12 Days)
The original. The one everybody knows. Our 12-Day EBC Trek follows the most popular route in the Himalayas -- Lukla to Namche Bazaar to Tengboche to Dingboche to Gorak Shep to Base Camp (5,364m) and Kala Patthar (5,545m).
Best for: First-time Himalayan trekkers who want the iconic experience
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (3/5)
Highest point: 5,545m (Kala Patthar)
From: $1,133
My take: This is the right choice for 70% of people. It's well-paced, the teahouses are the best in Nepal, and standing at Base Camp watching the Khumbu Icefall is genuinely unforgettable. The only downside is crowds in peak season (October-November).
2. EBC by Road (15 Days)
Same destination, different start. Our 15-Day EBC by Road replaces the Lukla flight with a scenic drive through Nepal's hill country. You save $200-300 on flights and see parts of Nepal that 95% of EBC trekkers miss.
Best for: Budget trekkers, those nervous about Lukla flights, travellers who want to see more of rural Nepal
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (3/5)
From: $1,133
My take: Underrated. The drive adds 2-3 days but the hill country scenery is beautiful, and you avoid the Lukla flight lottery (cancellations and delays are common). If you have the time, this is the smarter route.
3. EBC with Helicopter Return (10 Days)
Trek up, fly down. Our 10-Day EBC with Helicopter Return gives you the full trekking experience on the way up, then a spectacular helicopter flight back to Lukla or Kathmandu.
Best for: Travellers with limited time who still want the full uphill trek experience
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (3/5)
From: $1,799
My take: The best option if you have 10 days. You don't miss anything meaningful -- the descent is the same trail in reverse. And the helicopter views of the Khumbu Icefall from above are extraordinary.
4. EBC + Gokyo Lakes via Chola Pass (15 Days)
The ultimate Khumbu circuit. Our 15-Day EBC + Gokyo via Chola Pass combines EBC with the stunning turquoise Gokyo Lakes and a sunrise climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357m). You cross Chola Pass (5,420m) connecting the two valleys.
Best for: Experienced trekkers who want the complete Everest region experience
Difficulty: Challenging (4/5)
Highest point: 5,545m (Kala Patthar)
From: $1,599
My take: If you have 15 days and decent fitness, this is the best trek in the Everest region. You get EBC, Gokyo Lakes, two panoramic viewpoints (Kala Patthar AND Gokyo Ri), and the thrill of crossing Chola Pass. Most trekkers who do this route say they'd never have been satisfied with just EBC alone.
5. Gokyo Valley Lakes Trek (10 Days)
Skip EBC entirely. Our 10-Day Gokyo Valley Lakes Trek takes you to the six sacred turquoise lakes and the Gokyo Ri viewpoint -- where you see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu simultaneously.
Best for: Trekkers who want Everest views without the EBC crowds, photographers, those who've already done EBC
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5)
From: $1,299
My take: Hugely underrated. The Gokyo Lakes are among the most beautiful sights in Nepal, and the trail sees a fraction of EBC traffic. The Gokyo Ri sunrise -- four 8,000-metre peaks in one panorama -- is arguably better than Kala Patthar. If you want solitude and natural beauty over the "I went to Base Camp" bragging rights, choose Gokyo.
6. Everest Three Passes Trek (17 Days)
The big one. Our 17-Day Three Passes Trek crosses Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m) -- the three major passes of the Khumbu region. You see everything: EBC, Gokyo Lakes, the Gokyo Ri viewpoint, and vast areas that most trekkers never reach.
Best for: Fit, experienced trekkers looking for the ultimate Khumbu challenge
Difficulty: Very Strenuous (4.5/5)
Highest point: 5,545m
From: $1,899
My take: This is for serious trekkers. The Three Passes route is physically demanding and requires excellent fitness. But if you can do it, you'll see the Everest region in a way that 95% of visitors never will. It's the difference between visiting a city and living in it.
7. Jiri to EBC (18 Days)
The original route. Before Lukla airport existed, every Everest expedition started from Jiri -- an 18-day approach through the lush mid-hills of Solukhumbu. Our 18-Day Jiri to EBC Trek follows in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
Best for: History lovers, trekkers who want the full cultural experience, those avoiding Lukla flights
Difficulty: Moderate (3/5) -- long but not technically difficult
From: $1,499
My take: The first seven days from Jiri to Lukla are through Nepal's most beautiful hill country -- terraced farmland, Rai and Sherpa villages, and forests that most EBC trekkers fly right over. If you have the time, this is the most culturally rich EBC experience. It's also the cheapest way to reach Base Camp since you skip the expensive Lukla flights entirely.
8. Everest View Trek (7 Days)
The short option. Our 7-Day Everest View Trek takes you to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and the Everest View Hotel viewpoint (3,880m) -- where you see Everest, Ama Dablam, and the Khumbu peaks without going above 4,000 metres.
Best for: Beginners, families, older trekkers, those with limited time
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (2/5)
From: $899
My take: Perfect if you want to experience the Everest region without the altitude commitment. You still fly to Lukla, cross the famous suspension bridges, explore Namche Bazaar, and see Everest from a distance. It's not Base Camp, but it's still the Khumbu -- and that's special.

When to Trek the Everest Region
Best months: October-November (autumn, clearest skies) and March-May (spring, warmer, rhododendrons)
Possible: September (end of monsoon, clearing) and December-February (cold but quiet)
Avoid: June-August (monsoon — cloudy, wet below Namche, Lukla flights unreliable)
