Mera Peak Climbing Cost 2026: Permits, Gear, and Full Budget Breakdown

Updated on May 01, 2026

Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, and climbing it costs less than most people expect for an expedition that puts you at 6,476 metres with five 8,000-metre peaks visible from the summit. It is also one of the most transparent climbs to budget for because the costs are predictable: the NMA permit, the Lukla flight, the guide and Sherpa fees, and the trek logistics follow established patterns.

Here is every cost you will face, broken down so you can plan your budget before committing to anything.

April 2026 price note: Nepal's fuel costs have risen sharply due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Lukla flight prices have increased significantly (aviation fuel nearly doubled). The prices below reflect current 2026 rates.

Permit Costs (Included in Package)

Mera Peak requires permits from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the national park authority. All are included in our packages, but here is what they cost individually:

NMA Climbing Permit:

  • Spring season (March to May): 350 USD per person
  • Autumn season (September to November): 175 USD per person
  • Winter and summer: 175 USD per person

Garbage deposit: 500 USD per expedition (refundable upon proper waste management). This is paid by the operator, not the individual climber, and is included in your package price.

Makalu Barun National Park entry: Approximately 30 USD per person (the Hinku Valley falls within this park boundary).

Local area permit (Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality): Approximately 20 USD per person.

Total permit costs for a spring climb: roughly 400 USD per person. Autumn is cheaper at roughly 225 USD. The significant price difference between seasons is one reason autumn Mera expeditions cost less overall. For more on Nepal's climbing permit system, read our permits guide.

Lukla Flights

Like all Everest region expeditions, Mera Peak starts and ends with the Lukla flight. Following the 2026 fuel crisis:

  • Return flight Kathmandu/Ramechhap to Lukla: 500 to 580 USD per person at current fuel-adjusted prices
  • Flights depart from Ramechhap (Manthali), five hours east of Kathmandu. Your package includes transport to Ramechhap.
  • Weather cancellations: Common, especially in monsoon and winter. Budget one to two buffer days.

Lukla flights are included in Budget and Standard packages. Luxury tier replaces flights with helicopter transport. For a detailed comparison of Lukla flight vs road approach, read our Lukla vs road guide.

Food and Drink on the Trail

The Hinku Valley is more remote than the main Everest trail, and teahouse options are fewer and simpler. Prices are comparable to the Everest region but with less menu variety:

  • Dal bhat: 650 to 1,200 NPR (4.50 to 8 USD)
  • Noodle soup or thukpa: 500 to 900 NPR
  • Tea or coffee: 150 to 300 NPR
  • Bottled water (1 litre): 200 to 600 NPR
  • Snacks and chocolate: 200 to 500 NPR

Budget trekkers paying their own meals should budget 25 to 35 USD per day. Over fourteen days: 350 to 490 USD. Standard and Luxury trekkers with meals included should carry 5 to 10 USD per day for extras. Read our teahouse food guide for more on trail cuisine.

Travel Insurance

Mera Peak reaches 6,476 metres. You need travel insurance that specifically covers:

  • Emergency helicopter evacuation above 6,000 metres
  • Mountaineering and climbing activities (standard trekking policies will not cover peak climbing)
  • Medical treatment abroad (minimum 100,000 USD)
  • Trip cancellation

Budget 150 to 300 USD for a two to three-week policy with climbing cover above 6,000 metres. This is non-negotiable. A helicopter evacuation from high camp on Mera costs 6,500 to 10,000 USD without insurance.

Tips

  • Trekking guide: 10 to 15 USD per day (140 to 210 USD for 14 days)
  • Climbing Sherpa: 15 to 20 USD per day for summit days, 10 USD for trek days (roughly 150 to 200 USD total)
  • Porter: 8 to 10 USD per day (112 to 140 USD for 14 days)

Total tips for Standard tier: roughly 400 to 550 USD. The climbing Sherpa deserves recognition proportional to the responsibility. On summit day, your life is literally in their hands. More on tipping culture.

Spring vs Autumn: Which Season Is Cheaper?

Autumn expeditions cost less for two reasons: the NMA permit is half the spring price (175 USD vs 350 USD), and international flights to Kathmandu are sometimes cheaper outside the peak October rush if you fly in September or late November.

However, spring has advantages worth the extra cost: warmer temperatures at high camp (which makes summit night more bearable), rhododendron blooms on the approach through the lower Hinku Valley, and longer daylight hours. Most climbers choose based on weather preference rather than cost, since the total difference is only 150 to 300 USD.

Mera Peak vs Island Peak: Cost Comparison

The two most popular 6,000-metre peaks in Nepal have nearly identical pricing:

TierMera Peak (14 days)Island Peak (14 days)
Budget1,111 USD1,111 USD
Standard1,999 USD1,800 USD
Luxury2,499 USD3,500 USD

Standard Mera is 199 USD more than Island Peak Standard, primarily because Mera's NMA permit costs more in spring. At Luxury tier, Island Peak is significantly more expensive because helicopter operations in the Khumbu are costlier after the 2026 fuel increases. For a full comparison beyond cost, read our Mera Peak vs Island Peak guide.

Can You Do It Cheaper?

The NMA permit, Lukla flights, and climbing Sherpa are fixed costs that no legitimate operator can avoid. The permit alone runs 175 to 350 USD per person. Lukla flights are 500 to 580 USD at current prices. A qualified climbing Sherpa costs the operator 25 to 40 USD per day.

If an operator quotes significantly below our prices, ask what is excluded. Common cost-cutting tactics include: using fewer guides (dangerous above 5,000 metres), skipping the acclimatisation day at Khare (increases altitude sickness risk), providing lower-quality climbing gear, and using less experienced Sherpas. On a 6,476-metre peak, these are not the areas to save money.

Where you can save legitimately: climb in autumn (cheaper NMA permit), book flights early, choose Budget tier if you are comfortable carrying your own bag, and travel with friends to share the per-group costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is spring more expensive than autumn?

The NMA charges double for spring climbing permits (350 vs 175 USD). Spring is considered the premium season because of warmer temperatures and longer days. The total trip difference is 150 to 300 USD, not enough to change most people's decision.

Are climbing gear rental costs included?

Yes. All technical climbing gear (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, ropes) is included in every tier. We also provide duffel bags and down jackets free. You do not need to rent or buy any climbing equipment.

How much cash should I carry?

There are no ATMs in the Hinku Valley. For Standard tier (meals included), carry 8,000 to 12,000 NPR (55 to 80 USD) for extras. For Budget tier, carry 45,000 to 65,000 NPR (300 to 430 USD) for food plus extras. Withdraw in Kathmandu before departure. See our currency guide.

Is Mera cheaper than Everest Base Camp?

The package price is similar (Mera Standard 1,999 USD vs EBC Standard 1,072 USD), but Mera includes climbing gear, Sherpa, and NMA permits that EBC does not require. When you compare total trip costs including all extras, Mera costs roughly 800 to 1,200 USD more than EBC, primarily due to the climbing permit and Sherpa fees.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

No. Mera Peak is non-technical and all skills are taught at base camp. However, strong fitness and ideally previous high-altitude trekking experience are important. Read our beginner's guide to Mera Peak for full preparation advice.
