Ten days is the sweet spot for Nepal. It is long enough to fit a proper trek and a cultural experience into the same trip, without rushing either. Most people who come to Nepal for the first time try to choose between trekking and sightseeing. With ten days, you do not have to choose. You do both.
This itinerary combines a seven-day trek with three days of cultural touring, wildlife, or adventure activities. It works for fit first-timers, couples, and small groups who want the full Nepal experience in a single trip.
The Route: Two Options
The ten-day format works best with one of these two combinations:
| Option A: Trek First | Option B: Culture First | |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1-2 | Kathmandu sightseeing | Kathmandu sightseeing |
| Days 3-9 | Poon Hill or Mardi Himal trek | Chitwan safari + Pokhara |
| Day 10 | Return to Kathmandu, departure | Days 5-9: Poon Hill trek |
| Day 10: Return, departure |
Option A gives you more trekking days. Option B gives you wildlife and lake time alongside a shorter trek. Both start and end in Kathmandu.
Option A: Kathmandu + Poon Hill Trek (10 Days)
Days 1-2: Kathmandu
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. Your driver transfers you to your hotel in Thamel or Lazimpat. Day one is for arrival and adjustment. If you land early enough, walk to a rooftop cafe, order a masala tea, and watch the city below.
Day two: full cultural day. Visit Boudhanath Stupa (one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas), Pashupatinath Temple (Nepal's most sacred Hindu site, with cremation ghats along the Bagmati River), Kathmandu Durbar Square (medieval palace complex), and Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple, with a panoramic valley view from the hilltop). A local guide who knows the history costs 25 to 40 USD for the day and transforms the experience from sightseeing into understanding.
Day 3: Kathmandu to Pokhara to Nayapul to Tikhedhunga
Early morning drive or flight to Pokhara, then continue by vehicle to Nayapul, the trailhead for the Poon Hill trek. Begin trekking to Tikhedhunga (1,540m). The first day is gentle and gives you a taste of rural Nepal: terraced fields, small villages, and the sound of the Modi Khola river below.
Day 4: Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2,870m)
The steepest day. You climb over 3,000 stone steps through dense rhododendron forest. In spring (March to April), the forest blooms in reds, pinks, and whites. By afternoon you reach Ghorepani, a ridge-top village with the first proper mountain views: Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and the Annapurna range fill the western and northern horizons.
Day 5: Poon Hill Sunrise + Trek to Tadapani (2,630m)
Wake at four thirty. Climb forty-five minutes by headlamp to Poon Hill (3,210m). Watch the sun rise over the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare, Manaslu, and the entire western Himalayan panorama. This is one of the most famous sunrise viewpoints in Nepal, and at this hour, standing in silence as the peaks turn gold, you understand why people keep coming back.
Descend for breakfast, then trek through forest to Tadapani with views of Machapuchare and Annapurna South.
Day 6: Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,940m)
Descend through rhododendron and bamboo forest to Ghandruk, one of the largest and most picturesque Gurung villages in the Annapurna region. Stone houses with slate roofs. A Gurung museum documenting the community's history and their renowned service in the Gurkha regiments. Mountain views from every teahouse rooftop.
Day 7: Ghandruk to Nayapul, Drive to Pokhara
Final descent to Nayapul (three to four hours), then drive to Pokhara. Afternoon free to explore Pokhara's lakeside: Phewa Lake boating, cafes, bookshops, or simply sitting by the water watching the Annapurna range reflected in the lake.
Day 8: Pokhara Full Day
Morning: Sarangkot sunrise (drive thirty minutes, watch dawn light the Annapurna range). Then choose your adventure:
- Paragliding over the lake and mountains (70 to 100 USD, thirty minutes, no experience needed)
- Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave
- International Mountain Museum
- World Peace Pagoda hike
- Or simply rest your legs at a lakeside cafe after five days of trekking
Day 9: Pokhara to Kathmandu
Fly (twenty-five minutes, 120 to 180 USD) or drive (six to seven hours, 12 to 22 USD by tourist bus). See our Kathmandu to Pokhara transport guide. Evening farewell dinner.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer to airport. Last-minute shopping in Thamel if time allows.
Option B: Kathmandu + Chitwan + Pokhara + Short Trek (10 Days)
This option replaces two trekking days with a Chitwan safari and additional Pokhara time, then fits in a four-day Poon Hill trek.
Days 1-2: Kathmandu (same as Option A)
Day 3: Kathmandu to Chitwan
Five to six-hour drive to Sauraha. Afternoon village walk through the Tharu community. Evening Tharu cultural dance performance.
Day 4: Chitwan Safari
Full day in the national park. Morning jeep safari (rhinos almost guaranteed, tigers possible). Afternoon canoe ride on the Rapti River (crocodiles, kingfishers, deer). This is Nepal below the mountains, a subtropical world of jungle, grassland, and river that most trekking tourists miss.
Day 5: Chitwan to Pokhara
Six to seven-hour drive. Arrive Pokhara by late afternoon. Lakeside dinner.
Days 6-9: Poon Hill Trek (compressed 4-day version)
Day 6: Drive to Nayapul, trek to Ghorepani. Day 7: Poon Hill sunrise, trek to Tadapani. Day 8: Tadapani to Ghandruk. Day 9: Ghandruk to Nayapul, drive to Pokhara, fly to Kathmandu.
Day 10: Departure from Kathmandu

What to Pack for a Combined Trip
A ten-day trip that mixes city, safari, and trekking needs versatile packing. The challenge is that Kathmandu is warm and dusty, Chitwan is subtropical and humid, and the trek goes to 3,200 metres where mornings are cold. You need clothing that works across all three environments without overpacking.
Essential items:
- Layering system: One thermal base layer, one fleece mid-layer, one lightweight down jacket (we provide this free). These three layers handle everything from Chitwan heat (remove all layers) to Poon Hill sunrise (wear all layers).
- Trekking boots: Proper ankle-supporting boots for the trek. Wear them in Kathmandu too so they are broken in by Day 3.
- Light trousers: Two pairs of lightweight trekking trousers work for the city, the safari, and the trail. Zip-off trousers are practical.
- Rain jacket: Essential in all seasons except deep winter. A lightweight packable shell weighs nothing and saves you when weather changes.
- Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen SPF 50, sunglasses. The Poon Hill sunrise viewpoint at 3,210 metres has intense UV even on cloudy mornings.
- Daypack (25-30 litres): For the trek days your porter carries your duffel; you carry only water, snacks, camera, and jacket in your daypack.
We provide duffel bags for the trek portion. Leave your main luggage at your Kathmandu hotel (most offer free storage). For a complete list, read our packing guide.
Combining with Longer Treks
If you have twelve to fourteen days instead of ten, you can upgrade the trek component significantly:
- 12-13 days: Replace Poon Hill with Annapurna Base Camp (9 days) plus two days in Kathmandu. This gives you the full ABC experience with the natural amphitheatre at 4,130 metres.
- 14 days: Add Chitwan safari between Kathmandu and Pokhara, then do the full ABC trek. The ultimate Nepal first-timer trip: culture, wildlife, and high-altitude trekking in two weeks. Read our ABC cost guide for pricing.
- 16+ days: Do Kathmandu sightseeing, Chitwan safari, then the full Everest Base Camp trek from Lukla. This requires careful scheduling but covers everything Nepal offers in a single trip.
Which Treks Work in 10 Days?
Not every trek fits a ten-day Nepal trip. The ones that work are short treks based from Pokhara that do not require Lukla flights or restricted area permits:
- Poon Hill / Ghorepani (4-5 days): The classic short trek. Sunrise panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Moderate difficulty. Works for beginners.
- Mardi Himal (5-6 days): A quieter alternative to Poon Hill with closer Annapurna views. Steeper but fewer trekkers.
- Mohare Danda (4-5 days): A community-managed trail with similar views to Poon Hill but almost zero tourists. Off-the-beaten-path in the best way.
- Royal Trek (3-4 days): A gentle, low-altitude trek named after Prince Charles, who walked this route in 1980. Views of Annapurna and Machapuchare without the altitude challenge.
Everest Base Camp (12-14 days) and Annapurna Base Camp (9 days) do not fit a ten-day trip that includes cultural sightseeing. If EBC or ABC is your priority, dedicate your full trip to the trek and save cultural touring for another visit.
Best Time for a 10-Day Nepal Trip
- October to November: Best weather, clearest mountain views, peak season. Book hotels and treks early.
- March to April: Spring warmth, rhododendron blooms on the Poon Hill trail, slightly fewer tourists than autumn.
- September: Post-monsoon freshness, green landscape, good value, slightly unpredictable weather.
- December to February: Cold but clear. Fewer tourists. The cultural sites in Kathmandu and Chitwan are comfortable year-round; the trek will be cold above 2,500 metres but manageable with warm gear (we provide down jackets free).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ten days enough for Nepal?
For a first visit combining one short trek with cultural sightseeing, yes. You will not see everything, but you will see enough to understand why people come back. If you have fourteen days, you can upgrade to Annapurna Base Camp instead of Poon Hill and still fit in Kathmandu sightseeing.
Do I need to be fit for the Poon Hill trek?
You need basic fitness. The trek involves four to six hours of walking per day on well-maintained stone paths. The climb to Ghorepani on Day 4 is steep (3,000+ stone steps) but manageable at a steady pace. No previous trekking experience is required. Read our fitness guide for specific preparation advice.
Can I add Everest Base Camp to this itinerary?
No. EBC takes twelve to fourteen days for the trek alone. With Kathmandu sightseeing, you need sixteen or more days. If EBC is your goal, skip the cultural add-ons and dedicate your full trip to the trek.
Is this itinerary suitable for families?
Option B works well for families with children over eight. The Chitwan safari is exciting for kids, Pokhara boating is relaxing, and the Poon Hill trek is manageable for active children. Skip the compressed four-day version and do a three-day Royal Trek instead if your children are younger.
Can I do this trip independently without a company?
You can arrange Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Pokhara independently. The trek legally requires a guide (since 2023). Booking everything through one company saves time, avoids logistical headaches, and usually costs less than arranging each piece separately.
