Is the Everest Base Camp Trek Worth It? An Honest Answer Before You Spend USD 1,399 to 4,999
Last updated 15 October 2026.
Short answer: Yes, for most fit walkers who have 12 days, plus two spare days for the flight, and who want the walk more than the view. Base Camp itself is a rocky glacier camp at 5,364 m, and you cannot see the summit of Everest from it. The view comes from Kala Patthar (5,545 m) at sunrise, and it is on the route. The 12-day Everest Base Camp trek costs USD 1,399 per person on Budget, USD 2,499 on Standard and USD 4,999 on Luxury, the same for one to four guests. If you have only a week, or you want fewer people on the path, I would send you somewhere else, and I say where below.
I am Shreejan. People ask me this every week, usually after reading a page that only says yes. This is the answer I give on WhatsApp, with prices read from our live package pages on 15 October 2026.
Is the Everest Base Camp trek worth it? The facts first
| Question | Honest answer |
|---|---|
| How long | 12 days Kathmandu to Kathmandu, plus two spare days I advise before your flight home |
| How high and how hard | Base Camp 5,364 m, Kala Patthar 5,545 m, highest sleep Lobuche 4,940 m. Graded strenuous, no climbing skill needed |
| Cost, 2 to 4 guests | USD 1,399 Budget, USD 2,499 Standard, USD 4,999 Luxury |
| What you see | The Khumbu Icefall and glacier at Base Camp. The full Everest summit only from Kala Patthar |
| What can go wrong | Altitude sickness, cold, a delayed Lukla flight, a busy trail in October |
Is the Everest Base Camp trek worth the money?
Whether the Everest Base Camp trek is worth USD 1,399 to 4,999 depends on the tier, so here is what each buys. The price is per person for two to four guests, and a solo trekker pays the same on this trek. For five to eight guests Budget drops to USD 1,299, Standard to USD 2,449 and Luxury to USD 4,949.
| Tier | Price pp | Porter | Meals | Rooms | Lukla |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | USD 1,399 | None, you carry your own bag | Not included | Shared teahouse rooms | Fixed-wing flight |
| Standard | USD 2,499 | One porter for every two trekkers | All meals | Private twin rooms | Fixed-wing flight |
| Luxury | USD 4,999 | One porter each | All meals, fruit and nuts, unlimited soft drinks | Private deluxe rooms with bathroom | Round-trip helicopter from Kathmandu |
All three include a licensed guide, your permits and the Lukla transport. A solo Standard trekker has no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of the bag. An extra porter is USD 25 a day plus 13 per cent VAT and the 3.5 per cent bank charge. Budget looks cheap until you add your own food, at teahouse prices that rise with every day you climb. My honest advice for a first high trek is Standard, or Luxury if you want the helicopter. My Standard versus Luxury guide shows what the gap buys, and my full Everest Base Camp cost guide covers the rest.
Not in any price: international flights, Kathmandu hotels (our family homestay is USD 15 per person a night), your Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, USD 125 for 90 days, paid on arrival), travel insurance, tips and personal spending. Our package page suggests about USD 20 a day for personal costs on the trail.
Can you see Everest from Everest Base Camp?
No. This is the biggest surprise for first-timers. At Base Camp you stand under the Khumbu Icefall, and the wall of Nuptse (7,861 m) hides the summit of Everest. The postcard view of the whole mountain comes from Kala Patthar, 181 m higher than Base Camp. You climb it before dawn from Gorak Shep (5,164 m), and it is included on the 12-day route.
So what is Base Camp for? It is the end of the walk. You stand on a moving glacier below the icefall that climbers cross, and in spring you see the expedition tents. If you only want the view of Everest, the Everest View Hotel above Namche (3,880 m) gives you a first look on day 3 of this same trek, and Gokyo Ri gives a wider one.
How hard is the Everest Base Camp trek, and who is it not for?
The trek needs no climbing skill, but it is not easy. On our 12-day itinerary the long days are 6 to 8 hours: Namche to Tengboche is 5 to 6 hours, Lobuche to Base Camp is 7 to 8 hours and 14 km, and day 9 is Kala Patthar and then down to Pangboche, 7 to 8 hours and 16.5 km. There are two rest days, at Namche (3,440 m) and Dingboche (4,410 m). The real risk is altitude, not fitness. Fitness helps, but it does not decide who adapts. My difficulty guide and training guide go deeper.
Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks your oxygen level, and if you are not adapting we do not go higher. That is a rule, not a promise of success. The trek is probably not for you if:
| If this is you | My advice |
|---|---|
| You have a week or less | Take the 7-day Everest View Trek, not a rushed Base Camp trip |
| You cannot spare two buffer days at the end | Choose the helicopter return option below, or a trek with no Lukla flight |
| You have a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition | Talk to your doctor first, then to me, before you book |
| You cannot stand cold rooms and plain food | The Everest trails are cold above 4,000 m whatever the tier. Annapurna is warmer |
| You want an empty trail in October | Choose Gokyo, or go in a quieter month |
| You expect a summit view from Base Camp | Read the section above again |
Age is not the barrier people think. See my age limit guide for children and older trekkers.
Is the Everest Base Camp trek too crowded?
In October it can feel busy. October is the busiest month, with teahouses filling by early afternoon between Namche and Tengboche, and April is the second peak. March, May and late November are quieter. I give month-by-month detail in my guide to avoiding crowds at Everest Base Camp. I do not have a head count I trust, so I will not invent one.
How risky is the Lukla flight, and what if it is cancelled?
The flight to Lukla (2,860 m) depends on the weather, and delays of a day or two happen. In the busy weeks (March to May and September to November) flights leave from Manthali, and I collect you between midnight and 2 am for a drive of four to five hours. The 12-day itinerary has no spare day in it, so keep two days free before your flight home. If a flight is cancelled, a helicopter is the alternative, and our package page says to expect about USD 500 to 1,000 per person when five people share. My Lukla flight guide has the fares and what to do when it does not fly.
If the buffer days are the problem, there are two options. Luxury flies by helicopter between Kathmandu and Lukla both ways. Or take the 10-day Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return, where you fly from Gorak Shep straight to Kathmandu and skip three days of walking down. For two to four guests it costs USD 3,999 on Budget, USD 4,199 on Standard and USD 4,999 on Luxury. It suits fixed flight dates and tired knees, and it is a lot more money.
Is there a cheaper, shorter or quieter trek than Everest Base Camp?
Yes. Prices below are per person, Budget / Standard / Luxury, for two to four guests, read from the live pages.
| Trek | Days | Highest point | Budget / Standard / Luxury | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everest Base Camp | 12 | Kala Patthar 5,545 m | USD 1,399 / 2,499 / 4,999 | You want Base Camp itself |
| Everest View, 5 days | 5 | 3,880 m | USD 1,405 / 1,660 / 3,030 | You have five days and no altitude experience |
| Everest View, 7 days | 7 | 3,880 m | USD 1,565 / 1,955 / 3,645 | You want Tengboche Monastery too |
| Gokyo Lakes | 10 | Gokyo Ri 5,357 m | USD 1,225 / 2,299 / 4,132 | You want a wide Everest view and fewer people |
| Annapurna Base Camp | 9 | 4,130 m | USD 725 / 1,310 / 2,095 | You want lower altitude, warmer lodges and a lower price |
My 5 or 7 day comparison explains it. I wrote about Everest Base Camp versus Gokyo in full. Annapurna is a different mountain range, and my guide to Everest or Annapurna Base Camp helps you choose.
When is the Everest Base Camp trek worth doing in 2027?
Pick the season before you decide whether it is worth it, because cloud, cold and crowds change the answer. The table gives Lukla rain and Namche day and night temperatures from our package month table. Base Camp and Gorak Shep are much colder than Namche, and the pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar is minus 15 to minus 25 degrees Celsius, depending on the season.
| Month | Lukla rain and Namche day / night (C) | My verdict |
|---|---|---|
| January, February | Lukla 15.3 to 17.2 mm. 6.9 / -8.5 and 6.4 / -6.5 | Quiet and very cold. Experienced winter trekkers only |
| March | Lukla 45.3 mm. 9.6 / -3.0 | Possible. Cold nights, fewer people early on |
| April | Lukla 58.7 mm. 12.8 / 0.8 | Good, and busy. Afternoon cloud builds |
| May | Lukla 127.6 mm. 14.3 / 3.7 | Early May only |
| June to August | Monsoon. Lukla 325 to 642 mm | No. Cloud hides the views and flights are held up |
| September | Lukla 419.0 mm | Late September only, with spare days |
| October | Lukla 102.9 mm. 12.5 / 1.2 | Clear and the busiest month |
| November | Lukla 6.2 mm. 9.1 / -3.8 | My pick, especially the first half |
| December | Lukla 0.5 mm. 7.6 / -7.1 | Clear and cold. Only with proper gear |
My honest pick for 2027 is the first half of November or late March to April if you want spring.
What permits and insurance do you need?
You need three permits: Sagarmatha National Park entry (NPR 3,000), the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee (NPR 3,000) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). We arrange all three, and they are in every price. For insurance, buy it at home, not in Nepal. It must cover trekking and helicopter rescue to the right altitude. Our package page asks for cover up to 6,000 m, and Kala Patthar is 5,545 m, so do not buy a policy that stops lower. I do not recommend policies bought in Nepal. My insurance guide explains what to look for.
Questions people ask
Is the Everest Base Camp trek worth it for a first-time trekker? Yes, if you are reasonably fit, accept that it is hard, and give it 12 days. Take Standard so a porter shares your load, and do not skip either rest day.
How much does the Everest Base Camp trek cost in 2027? From USD 1,399 per person on Budget, USD 2,499 on Standard and USD 4,999 on Luxury with us, for one to four guests. Flights to Kathmandu, hotels there, visa, insurance and tips are extra.
How many days do you need for Everest Base Camp? Twelve days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, plus two buffer days for the Lukla flight. Our 10-day version needs a helicopter back from Gorak Shep.
Can you do the Everest Base Camp trek without a guide? I advise against it. See my guide to trekking without a guide.
Is the Everest Base Camp trek dangerous? The main danger is altitude sickness, and cold and a long walk add to it. We walk slowly, take two rest days, check oxygen levels with an oximeter and turn back if you are not adapting. I cannot promise anyone will reach Base Camp.
Can you see Mount Everest from Base Camp? No. At Base Camp you stand under the Khumbu Icefall, and the wall of Nuptse hides the summit. The full view of Everest comes from Kala Patthar, which you climb before dawn from Gorak Shep on the 12-day route.
Is it worth going to Everest if I only have a week? Not to Base Camp, because 12 days is the honest minimum. A shorter walk to the Everest View viewpoints above Namche runs 5 or 7 days, from USD 1,405 or USD 1,565 per person on Budget for one to four guests.
What are the terms for this trek?
Group size is 1 to 20, and you can also trek solo. The deposit is 10 per cent and it is non-refundable, with no refund if you cancel. You can reschedule free of charge with at least 72 hours notice to any date within one year. The balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent and cash in Kathmandu carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
