Trekking Nepal in October 2026 — What's Open, Confirmed Departures, and Honest Weather
Some months are good for trekking. October is the one almost every guide who has ever done this work points to first. Clear skies after the monsoon, lodges fully open after the summer break, trails repaired by the season change, and the kind of mountain views that make people stand still and forget about the next ridge.
If you are searching "trekking Nepal October 2026", you are probably in one of three positions. You have time set aside for autumn and want to know what is still bookable. You are torn between October and November. Or you saw what last year's autumn looked like in someone's holiday photos and decided this is the year. This guide answers all three honestly. We will go trail by trail, give you the real 2026 prices, tell you which routes are filling fast, and tell you when to book to avoid the last-minute heli-rescue chaos that catches people who left it too late.
Why October is the month every trekking guide names first
October weather in Nepal sits in a narrow, almost ideal window. The monsoon retreats by the last week of September, leaving the air washed of dust and the views finally clear. Daytime temperatures at trekking altitudes (3,000 to 5,000 metres) range from 8°C to 18°C — warm enough to walk in a base layer, cold enough at night that the views in the morning are sharp and the photos are real.
The mountain visibility statistics are what people come for. October mornings produce the clearest mountain skies of any month, on average, across the last two decades of records. EBC trekkers see Everest from Tengboche, Kala Patthar, and Gorak Shep on roughly 23 of 31 October days. Annapurna Circuit trekkers cross Thorong La with mostly clear visibility on 25 of 31 October days. Manaslu Circuit gets the same window across Larkya La. Three years of weather extremes have tightened slightly — October 2024 saw four storm days where Lukla flights were grounded; October 2025 had two. October 2026 is shaping similar.
The lodges are the second reason October wins. After the monsoon, teahouses reopen with fresh kitchen stocks, repaired roofs, restocked propane, and rested staff. Through May the same lodges are in their second peak; through November some have already begun reducing hot showers and Wi-Fi as the temperature drops. October is the window when everything works.
The third reason is what we tell clients least often but matters most. October is the month when guides themselves are fresh, properly rested after the summer, well-fed, and not yet running back-to-back rotations through the season. By late November, even good guides are tired. In October, they are at their best.
October 2026 weather, day by day (what you actually feel)
Honest October weather looks like this across the trekking altitudes.
| Altitude band | Day temp | Night temp | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu (1,400m) | 22-27°C | 14-18°C | Clear, dry, comfortable |
| Lower trails (1,500-2,500m) | 18-22°C | 8-12°C | T-shirt by day, fleece evening |
| Mid (2,500-3,500m) | 12-18°C | 4-8°C | Base layer day, down jacket dawn/dusk |
| High (3,500-4,500m) | 5-12°C | -3 to 4°C | Full layers walking, four-season bag at night |
| Very high (4,500-5,500m) | -2 to 8°C | -10 to 0°C | Down jacket essential, frosty mornings |
Rainfall through October averages 35-60 mm across the trekking regions, almost all of it in the first week as the monsoon clears. By mid-October the trails are dry enough that even lower-section walking is dust-free for a few days before turning truly dry. Snow on the high passes is rare in the first three weeks of October. Thorong La and Larkya La are usually snow-free or with a light dusting. By the last week of October a fresh fall is possible — usually clearing within 24 hours.
For day-by-day weather, our best time to visit Nepal trekking guide covers the broader autumn vs spring trade-off and the months either side.
The 2026 permit situation — what changed and what is still the same
Nepal's trekking permit landscape moved slightly in 2026, mostly toward standardisation. Three changes matter for October bookings.
First, the 2024 mandatory-guide law remains fully in force for all national park treks. Anyone advertising a guideless EBC, Manaslu, Annapurna Circuit, or Langtang trek in October 2026 is either misleading you or about to get you turned around at a checkpoint. Our piece on whether you actually need a guide for EBC covers the rules in detail.
Second, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit (the modern replacement for the old TIMS for the Everest route) holds at NPR 2,000 per trekker for October 2026. Sagarmatha National Park entry stays at NPR 3,000. The combined entry cost is roughly USD 50 per trekker.
Third, the restricted-area permits (Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Nar Phu, Kanchenjunga) operate on the same fee structures as 2025. Upper Mustang holds at USD 500 for the first 10 days; Manaslu at USD 100 for the September-November window. There is no permit cap reduction this year for Upper Mustang as had been rumoured earlier — we have confirmed this with the Department of Immigration.
What did NOT change but matters for October: weekend permit office hours in Kathmandu remain limited. If your trek is late October, file permits by mid-October so you are not chasing offices over the festival holidays.
EBC in October 2026 — what to expect and what's still bookable
Everest Base Camp is the most popular October trek in Nepal by a long margin. Our internal data and the Khumbu trail counters agree: roughly 25% of all EBC trekkers in a calendar year arrive in October. The pressure on lodges, Lukla flights, and trail capacity is real. So is the reward — Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and the Khumbu Icefall in their best photographic light of the year.
The standard 12-day Lukla-in-Lukla-out itinerary works perfectly in October. Our EBC Trek 12 Days package ships with three tiers — Budget at USD 1,399, Standard at USD 2,499, Luxury at USD 4,999 — and October departures are currently 60% sold out for the first week, 75% for the second week, and effectively full for the third week. The last week of October still has Budget and Standard tier availability across most departures.
If a heli return interests you (skip the three-day walk back, replace with a 45-minute scenic helicopter), our EBC Heli Return 10 Days is the option from USD 4,499. October is when the helicopter pilots are busiest, which means heli return slots fill 8-12 weeks ahead. For October 2026 bookings, lock in by mid-July.
The road option, our EBC by Road 15 Days, avoids the Lukla flight entirely. October weather makes the road option more pleasant than it sounds — dry roads, clear views, no flight cancellation risk. From USD 1,133, this is the saving option that does not cut safety. Our dedicated EBC October guide covers the trail-day-by-trail-day experience, and the how to avoid EBC crowds guide covers timing tricks like starting one week earlier or one week later than the peak.
Annapurna Circuit in October 2026
The Annapurna Circuit is the second-most-booked October trek and arguably the more dramatic experience for first-time trekkers. The circuit takes 12 to 16 days, crosses Thorong La pass at 5,416 metres, and walks you through three distinct climate zones in a single trip — subtropical paddy fields in Besisahar, alpine meadows in Manang, and Tibetan-influenced high desert in Mustang.
Our Annapurna Circuit Trek 12 Days package from USD 720 (Budget tier) is the standard short-version itinerary. The 16-day extended version that includes Tilicho Lake (4,919 metres) at our Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho 16 Days for those with the extra week.
October is the month Thorong La opens in earnest. The high pass is technically passable through November and into early December, but November adds wind chill and December often closes the pass for days at a time. Our Thorong La crossing guide covers the pass-day-itself in detail. October crossings have the highest success rate of any month — typically 95% of trekkers make it across without being weather-turned-around.
The Annapurna Circuit October 2026 lodging picture: Manang (3,540m) is the bottleneck. Lodges fill 12-14 weeks ahead. If you want a room you do not have to share, book by July at latest. Lower-section lodging is much more available. For the trade-off between the Circuit and other options, our Manaslu vs Annapurna Circuit comparison and our EBC vs ABC comparison are honest reads.
Manaslu Circuit in October 2026 — the trek that is no longer secret
Five years ago the Manaslu Circuit was the secret trek of Nepal. October 2026 it is firmly mainstream — the regulation requiring a licensed guide and a minimum group of two has been in place long enough that the trekker volume has grown by an estimated 40% since 2022. The trail is still less crowded than the Annapurna Circuit, but it is no longer empty.
What you get for the slightly higher cost than the Annapurna Circuit is genuine wilderness for most of the trek, Tibetan-influenced villages without the day-trip tourism, and a single dramatic high pass at Larkya La (5,106 metres). Our Manaslu Circuit Trek 12 Days from USD 799 includes the restricted-area permit. For trekkers who want a longer route, the Tsum Valley extension adds a remarkable Buddhist-pilgrimage detour.
October 2026 Manaslu availability: Larkya La crossings work best in the first three weeks of October. The fourth week is also typically fine but adds altitude-cold risk. Tibetan-village teahouses at Samdo and Larkya Phedi (the highest pre-pass stops) are limited — book by mid-July for the first two weeks of October, by end of August for the third.
Mardi Himal in October 2026 — the trek for shorter October windows
If you have only one week in Nepal in October 2026 and want a real mountain experience, Mardi Himal is the answer most experienced guides give. Five to seven days, maximum altitude 4,500 metres at the High Camp viewpoint, full Annapurna Sanctuary backdrop, no Lukla flight needed, jeep access from Pokhara.
Our Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek 7 Days from USD 454 is the most affordable real-mountain trek we run. October Mardi Himal is at its best in the first two weeks (clear high-altitude views) and very respectable in the third (some cloud build-up after midday but mornings are still excellent).
What Mardi Himal does well is high views on a short timeline. Forest Camp at 2,600 metres, Low Camp at 3,000 metres, High Camp at 3,540 metres, Upper Viewpoint at 4,250 metres, and Base Camp at 4,500 metres. Each day a step up. Each step a new view. October availability stays good through the month with a bit more flexibility than the longer treks.
Annapurna Base Camp in October 2026
Annapurna Base Camp is the other 9-day choice if Mardi Himal feels too short. Our Annapurna Base Camp 9 Days from USD 499 walks you to the base of Annapurna I (8,091 metres) at 4,130 metres altitude. Less altitude than EBC, much less than the Annapurna Circuit, but with views that genuinely rival both.
October ABC is in its sweet spot. The morning amphitheatre view from the base camp (Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare reflecting first light) is on most of October days. The forest trail down through Chomrong is one of the most photographable walks in Nepal during the autumn colour change.
Lodging at base camp itself is limited. The base camp lodge has 30 beds total split across two buildings; the lower options at Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC) and Deurali add another 80 or so beds. October weekends fill 6-10 weeks ahead. Book by mid-August.
Langtang in October 2026 — Nepal's closest mountain escape
Langtang is the trek for the traveller who has a week in Kathmandu and wants to add a serious mountain trek without losing two days to flights. Our Langtang Trek 8 Days from USD 365 is the most accessible package we run. Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (6-7 hours), walk for five days through the Langtang valley to Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 metres), climb Tserko Ri (4,985 metres) on the rest day, walk back.
The 2015 earthquake completely rebuilt the Langtang valley. The villages today are newer, the teahouses better insulated, and the trail markers cleaner than any other major trek route. October weather in Langtang is excellent. Lower altitude than the other major treks means less altitude risk and more comfortable evenings.
The bonus October Langtang option: extend with the Tamang Heritage Trail before or after Langtang Valley. Our Tamang Heritage Trail 12 Days from USD 725 covers the Tamang villages northwest of Langtang including Gatlang and Tatopani. The combination delivers two distinct cultural experiences in a single trip.
Upper Mustang in October 2026 — the forbidden kingdom
Upper Mustang is the trek for trekkers who have done one or two Nepal treks already and want something completely different. Our Upper Mustang Trek 10 Days from USD 1,290 walks you across the Tibetan plateau of the former Mustang Kingdom — Lo Manthang walled city, 1,000-year-old cliff caves, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and a landscape that has more in common with Tibet than with Nepal.
Upper Mustang in October is special. The trees in the lower section turn gold and red against the dust-brown high desert. Lo Manthang's prayer flags snap in the dry wind. Mornings at altitude are sharp and the views back across the Annapurnas from Drakmar are some of the most photographable in the country.
The USD 500 restricted permit (first 10 days) is a real cost line but reflects the kingdom's protected status and the small numbers of trekkers allowed each year. October Upper Mustang books up by August because the permit allocation is small.
Poon Hill and Tamang Heritage in October — the gentle October options
If you want October mountain views without crossing 4,000 metres, two options carry the daypack. Our Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek 6 Days from USD 499 is the classic short trek — Ulleri stone steps, Ghorepani village, Poon Hill at sunrise (3,210 metres), back to Pokhara. October Poon Hill is busy but the sunrise from Poon Hill remains one of the best one-hour-of-walking returns in Nepal.
Tamang Heritage as covered above is the longer, quieter option. Both have full October availability throughout the month — these treks fill weeks ahead, not months ahead.
What October trekking actually costs in 2026
Here is what each trek actually costs in October 2026 on our Budget tier (Standard tier price in brackets). Prices exclude international flights to Kathmandu.
| Trek | Days | Budget USD (Standard) |
|---|---|---|
| Langtang | 8 | 365 (650) |
| Mardi Himal | 7 | 454 (849) |
| Poon Hill | 6 | 499 (749) |
| Annapurna Base Camp | 9 | 499 (799) |
| Annapurna Circuit | 12 | 720 (999) |
| Tamang Heritage | 12 | 725 (999) |
| Manaslu Circuit | 12 | 799 (1,599) |
| EBC by Road | 15 | 1,133 (1,693) |
| Upper Mustang | 10 | 1,290 (1,930) |
| EBC standard | 12 | 1,399 (2,499) |
October tier prices are 5-8% higher than September on most treks because Lukla flights, helicopter charters, and high-end lodges all charge October peak rates. Booking-deposit usually 10%, balance on arrival in Kathmandu before trek start.
What to pack for October — three things that matter most
Most packing lists for Nepal trekking are generic. October specifics matter. Three items make the biggest practical difference.
A proper down jacket rated to -10°C. Daytime temperatures look mild; the morning at Kala Patthar or Larkya La at -8°C is not. A 600-fill or better down jacket weighing 600-800g is the right specification. Rentals in Thamel cost USD 1-2 per day; quality is acceptable for a single trek.
A four-season sleeping bag. October nights at altitude drop well below zero. The teahouses provide blankets but they are inadequate above 3,500 metres. A bag rated to -10°C comfort (not -10°C extreme) is correct. Again, rental in Thamel is the practical option for first-time trekkers.
Trekking poles. October trails are sometimes wet on the first week of the month from late monsoon. The descent from Kala Patthar, the down-trail from Thorong La, and the Larkya La descent are all knee-hostile without poles. USD 5-10 in Thamel buys a functional pair.
Beyond these, the standard Nepal trekking packing list applies. Our EBC packing mistakes guide covers what NOT to bring (most first-timers over-pack heavily). The Annapurna Circuit packing guide covers the climate-crossing specific items.
October 2026 booking timeline — when to lock in your dates
This is the section that pays for the entire article. Booking timelines for October 2026 by trek:
- EBC Heli Return: book by 15 July 2026. Helicopter slots fill fastest.
- EBC standard 12-day, third week of October: book by 31 July. Lodge availability tightens fast.
- Annapurna Circuit, Manang lodging: book by 15 July. Manang is the bottleneck.
- Manaslu Circuit, Samdo and Larkya Phedi: book by 31 July for weeks one and two.
- Upper Mustang, restricted permit: book by 31 August. The permit office quota for October is small.
- ABC, base camp lodging weekends: book by 15 August.
- Langtang, Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, Tamang Heritage: book by 30 September. These remain flexible into the last week before departure.
Booking earlier than these dates gets you better lodge choice (private bath vs shared, premium vs standard). Booking after these dates means accepting whatever is available — sometimes acceptable, sometimes a real downgrade.
What can go wrong in October — three honest risks
Lukla flights. October Lukla flight reliability is at its best (about 80% on-time in peak season per government records) but it is not 100%. A one-day weather delay either direction is normal. A two-day delay happens roughly once per October. Build a buffer in your international flight schedule — at least 36 hours between your last trek-day and your homeward flight.
Festival crowd in Kathmandu. Dashain (Nepal's biggest festival) usually falls in early-to-mid October. The trek itself is unaffected — most lodge staff stay through Dashain — but Kathmandu transport, taxi pricing, and government office hours all shrink during the holiday week. Plan permit collection accordingly.
Late-October snow. The fourth week of October can see a fresh snowfall above 4,500 metres. This is usually benign — clears within 24-48 hours, dramatically pretty for photos — but a major snowfall can close passes for 2-3 days. Annapurna Circuit Thorong La crossing in the last week of October is the highest-risk pass-crossing of the month. Plan accordingly or shift to mid-October departure.
Frequently asked questions about October 2026 trekking
Is October or November better for Nepal trekking in 2026?
October has the best mountain visibility statistics, the highest lodge availability, and the warmest evenings of the post-monsoon window. November has fewer crowds, equally clear skies for the first two weeks, and colder nights. For a first-time Nepal trekker, October is the safer bet. For a returning trekker who prefers smaller groups, mid-November works. Our EBC autumn October vs November guide covers the trade-off in detail.
How crowded is EBC in October 2026?
The peak two weeks (mid-October) carry about 800 trekkers across all operators on any given week. Namche Bazaar lodges fill by mid-morning. The trail itself is comfortable — Khumbu valleys absorb the numbers — but lodge choice is constrained. Booking by July gives you the room choice; booking late September means you take what is left.
Can I still book a guide for October 2026 if I am flying in next week?
For shorter treks (Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, Langtang) — yes, our team can arrange last-minute guide and permits within 24 hours. For longer treks (EBC, Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu, Upper Mustang) — possibly, but the lodge bottleneck and Lukla flight bookings make late bookings harder. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you honestly what is still possible.
What is the actual October 2026 Lukla flight cancellation rate?
Roughly 1 in 7 flights see at least a half-day delay; roughly 1 in 25 flights see a full-day delay; full multi-day groundings are rare in October. Build a one-day buffer into your end-of-trek schedule and the Lukla weather is much less stressful.
Do I need different gear for October 2026 than for last year?
No. The gear specification is unchanged. The only buying-vs-renting trade-off shift is that Kathmandu rental prices are about 10% higher in October 2026 than 2025 reflecting broader Thamel inflation. Specialist trekking gear from home is still the better-value option if you trek more than once a year.
What happens if I book and have to cancel because of an emergency?
Our cancellation policy gives full refund minus permit costs up to 30 days before departure, 50% refund 15-29 days before, and case-by-case treatment within 14 days. Travel insurance with trip-cancellation cover is the right safety net here. Our Nepal luxury lodge cost guide covers the insurance specifics for upper-tier trips.
Is the Lukla flight included in the EBC October price?
Yes, in all our packages. The Budget, Standard, and Luxury tiers of our EBC 12 Days package all include the round-trip Kathmandu-Lukla flight. We arrange the flight in your name, hold the seat, and rebook free of charge if weather causes a date change.
How do I know my October 2026 trek is actually confirmed?
A confirmed booking with us means a written departure confirmation (Excel and PDF), a permit application started in your name, a Lukla flight booked in your name (for EBC routes), and a 10% deposit paid through 2C2P or HBL payment gateway. You can request copies of any of these before deposit. The departure is fully booked the moment the 10% is paid.
What if I cannot make the high pass — am I covered?
If altitude or weather prevents you from completing the high-altitude section (Kala Patthar, Thorong La, Larkya La, Tserko Ri), we re-route you to a safer altitude and continue the trek. There is no extra charge. Your guide makes the call based on safety, not on schedule.
Can I combine October treks?
Yes. Common combinations: Mardi Himal + Poon Hill (10 days), Langtang + Tamang Heritage (12 days), EBC + Three Passes (16 days), ABC + Upper Mustang (16 days). Combinations save on transit days and air costs. WhatsApp us with the combo you are considering and we will price it.
What if Lukla weather strands me for two days at the end?
If the delay is more than 24 hours, we cover one additional Kathmandu hotel night at standard tier. We also pay your taxi back to your international flight if the delay forces a re-routing. The contingency is small for us; the avoided stress for you is real.
