Langtang Valley vs Poon Hill: Which Beginner Trek Should You Choose?

Updated on April 02, 2026

Both are perfect beginner treks. Poon Hill is shorter. Langtang is deeper. This comparison helps you pick.

Two Treks. One Question.

If you've never trekked in Nepal before and you've got 7-10 days, the decision usually comes down to these two: Langtang Valley or Poon Hill. Both are accessible from Kathmandu. Both are suitable for beginners. Both deliver Himalayan views that justify the flight to Nepal.

But they're very different experiences. One is a short, sharp sunrise walk. The other is a deep valley immersion. This guide compares them honestly so you pick the right one for you.

The Quick Comparison

Poon Hill: What You Get

The Poon Hill trek is the classic short trek in Nepal. In 4-5 days you walk through Gurung villages, stay in comfortable teahouses, and wake up at 4:30am on day 3 to climb to Poon Hill (3,210m) for one of the most famous sunrise views in the Himalayas.

From the top, you see Dhaulagiri (8,167m), the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Nilgiri stretching across the horizon. On a clear morning, it's 180 degrees of snow-capped peaks turning gold. Then you walk back down.

Poon Hill's strengths:

  • Short enough to fit into a one-week Nepal trip
  • Low altitude means almost zero altitude sickness risk
  • Comfortable teahouses with hot showers at Ghorepani
  • Well-marked trail, impossible to get lost
  • Connects easily with Pokhara activities before or after

Poon Hill's limitations:

  • The trek peaks on one morning. If that sunrise is cloudy, you miss the main event.
  • The trail is busy. In October, Ghorepani can feel like a mountain hostel.
  • The walking itself isn't spectacular. Stone steps, forest, villages. The views from the trail are limited until you reach Ghorepani.
  • It feels like a day walk extended into a short trek. You never feel truly remote.

Langtang Valley: What You Get

The Langtang Valley trek takes 7-10 days and follows a glacial valley north from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m). The trail passes through bamboo forest, rhododendron canopy, yak pastures, and glacial moraine. You can optionally climb Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (4,984m) for panoramic views.

Langtang's strengths:

  • A full trekking experience across multiple climate zones
  • Much quieter than Poon Hill. You'll share trails with a fraction of the trekkers.
  • Tamang culture is rich and visible. The villages feel authentic, not tourist-oriented.
  • Kyanjin Gompa's cheese factory, glacier walks, and high viewpoints give multiple highlight days
  • The 2015 earthquake story adds depth. Langtang Village was destroyed and rebuilt. Walking through the memorial is moving.
  • No flights needed. You drive from Kathmandu and back.

Langtang's limitations:

  • It's longer. You need 7-10 days for the trek alone, plus travel days.
  • The drive to Syabrubesi (7-8 hours on a bumpy road) is tiring
  • Higher altitude means some altitude sickness risk, particularly if you climb Tserko Ri
  • Teahouses are more basic than the Annapurna region, particularly in the upper valley
  • The valley is narrow, so views are channelled rather than panoramic (until you climb the viewpoints)

Who Should Choose Poon Hill?

  • Short-trip trekkers: If you only have 7 days in Nepal total (including flights and Kathmandu), Poon Hill is the only trek that fits.
  • Altitude-anxious trekkers: If you're worried about altitude sickness, Poon Hill's 3,210m ceiling is well within the safe zone for almost everyone.
  • Comfort seekers: Ghorepani has some of the best teahouses in Nepal. Hot showers, solid menus, warm rooms.
  • Pokhara planners: If your trip centres on Pokhara (paragliding, lakeside, zip-lining), Poon Hill is a natural add-on.
  • Families with young children: The short distances and low altitude make it doable for children aged 8+.

Who Should Choose Langtang?

  • Trekkers with 10+ days: If you have the time, Langtang gives you more for your days.
  • People who want quiet: Langtang has 80-90% fewer trekkers than the Annapurna region.
  • Cultural travellers: The Tamang communities in Langtang are among the most welcoming in Nepal.
  • Budget trekkers: No flight to Pokhara or Lukla. Road transport from Kathmandu both ways. Our Langtang cost guide breaks it down.
  • Trekkers preparing for bigger treks: Langtang to 3,870m (or 4,984m) is good preparation for EBC or the Annapurna Circuit later.
  • Photographers: The variety of vegetation, wildlife, and mountain backdrops makes Langtang a richer photographic subject.

The Cost Comparison

Cost Element Poon Hill (5 days) Langtang (8 days)
Guide Included Included
Porter Included Included
Permits ACAP ~$30 + TIMS ~$15 Langtang NP ~$23 + TIMS ~$15
Transport to trailhead Pokhara flight ($100-120) or bus ($15-25) + taxi to Nayapul Bus/jeep Kathmandu-Syabrubesi ($15-30)
Accommodation (teahouse) 5 nights ~$25-50 total 8 nights ~$40-80 total
Meals 5 days ~$50-75 8 days ~$80-120
Total extra costs ~$230-310 ~$170-270

Langtang is actually cheaper per day because you skip the Pokhara flight. The longer duration means more meals and accommodation nights, but the base cost is lower.

Can You Do Both?

If you have three weeks in Nepal, absolutely. Trek Poon Hill first (5 days), return to Pokhara for a rest day, fly back to Kathmandu, drive to Syabrubesi, and trek Langtang (8 days). Total: about 16-17 days. You'd experience the best short and medium treks in Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which trek is better for a complete beginner?

Poon Hill is easier and shorter, making it the safer choice for someone who's never trekked. But Langtang is also suitable for beginners who are reasonably fit and have 10+ days. If you can walk 5-6 hours a day on uneven ground, you can do either.

Which trek has better mountain views?

Different, not better. Poon Hill gives you a single spectacular panorama at sunrise. Langtang gives you evolving views over several days, building to the viewpoint climbs at the end. Poon Hill is a postcard. Langtang is an album.

Is altitude sickness a risk on Langtang?

At Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), mild symptoms are possible but serious AMS is rare. If you climb Tserko Ri (4,984m), you're in altitude territory. The itinerary builds in acclimatisation time, and our guides monitor for symptoms. On Poon Hill (3,210m), altitude sickness is extremely unlikely.

Can I extend Langtang with Gosaikunda?

Yes. The Langtang + Gosaikunda route adds the sacred lake crossing (4,380m) and extends the trek to 12-14 days. It's a natural extension that adds variety without the logistics of a second separate trek.

Which is better in monsoon season?

Neither is ideal in monsoon (June-September), but both are possible. Poon Hill gets heavy rain and leeches. Langtang gets rain but the upper valley (above Langtang Village) is partially rain-shadowed. If you must trek in monsoon, Langtang is slightly better.

Both treks deliver. The question is what you want: a short, punchy highlight, or a longer, deeper journey. There's no wrong answer.
