Everest Helicopter Tour Price 2026: What It Costs and What You Get
The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is the fastest way to stand at 5,364 metres and see Mount Everest up close. No trekking. No altitude acclimatisation over multiple days. No teahouses. You fly from Kathmandu in the morning, land at Everest Base Camp, have breakfast at the Everest View Hotel with the Himalayan range in front of you, and return to Kathmandu by lunchtime.
It sounds extraordinary because it is. It is also expensive, and the costs have risen significantly in 2026. Here is exactly what it costs, what you get for the money, and whether it is worth it.
April 2026 price note: Nepal's aviation fuel prices nearly doubled in early 2026 due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Helicopter operating costs have increased substantially as a result. The prices below reflect current listed rates, but helicopter tour pricing may be adjusted further as operators absorb these increased costs. Contact us for the most current pricing.
How Much Does the Everest Helicopter Tour Cost?
Our one-day Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is priced in three tiers:

What You Actually Get for the Money
The helicopter tour packs an enormous amount into four to five hours:
6:00 AM: Pick up from your Kathmandu hotel and transfer to the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport.
7:00 AM: Helicopter departs Kathmandu. Within minutes you are flying over the Kathmandu Valley rim and into the middle hills. The landscape below shifts from terraced farmland to forested ridges. On a clear day, the Himalayan range appears on the horizon within fifteen minutes of takeoff.
7:30 AM: The helicopter enters the Khumbu region. You fly over Lukla (the airport that trekkers spend two days reaching), over Namche Bazaar, over Tengboche Monastery, and into the upper Khumbu Valley. Peaks rise on every side: Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and then Everest itself, filling the helicopter window.
8:00 AM: Landing at Everest Base Camp (5,364 metres) or Kala Patthar (5,545 metres), depending on conditions. You have fifteen to twenty minutes on the ground. The air is thin but the view is overwhelming. The Khumbu Icefall stretches below you. Everest's summit pyramid rises directly above. This is the same ground that trekkers spend twelve days walking to reach.
8:30 AM: Fly to the Everest View Hotel at Syangboche (3,880 metres). Breakfast with a panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The hotel claims to be the highest-altitude hotel in the world. The breakfast is good. The view is once-in-a-career.
10:00 AM: Return flight to Kathmandu. You are back at your hotel by 11:00 AM. The rest of the day is yours.

Helicopter Tour vs Trekking to EBC: Cost Comparison
The obvious question: is the helicopter tour worth it compared to trekking? Here is how the numbers compare:
| Helicopter Tour (1 day) | EBC Trek Standard (12 days) | |
|---|---|---|
| Package price | 4,499 USD (Budget) | 1,072 USD |
| Lukla flights | Included (helicopter) | 500-580 USD (separate) |
| Time required | 1 day | 12-14 days |
| Fitness required | None | Good cardiovascular fitness |
| Altitude exposure | 15-20 minutes at 5,364m | Several days above 4,000m |
| Experience depth | Spectacular but brief | Life-changing immersive journey |
| Total trip cost (UK) | 5,500-6,500 USD | 2,800-3,800 USD |
The helicopter tour costs roughly twice as much as the trek for a fundamentally different experience. Trekking gives you twelve days of walking through Sherpa villages, sleeping in teahouses, acclimatising gradually, and earning the view through physical effort. The helicopter gives you the same view in four hours. Neither is wrong. They serve completely different purposes.
The helicopter tour makes sense if you have limited time (perhaps a stopover in Kathmandu), if trekking is physically impossible for you, or if you want the ultimate bucket-list photo opportunity. The trek makes sense if you want the full Himalayan experience, have twelve or more days, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
For a complete trekking cost breakdown, read our EBC trek cost guide.
Other Helicopter Tour Options
The one-day EBC helicopter tour is the flagship product, but we offer other helicopter experiences in the Everest region:
EBC Trek with Helicopter Return (10 days): Trek to Everest Base Camp the traditional way, summit Kala Patthar at sunrise, then fly back to Kathmandu by helicopter instead of walking down. You get the full trekking experience going up and the spectacular aerial views coming back. This is our most popular hybrid option.
Short Trek to Namche + Helicopter to EBC (5 days): Trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar (two days), then fly by helicopter to EBC and back to Kathmandu. A compromise between trekking and the full helicopter tour that gives you a taste of the trail culture without the full twelve-day commitment.
Everest Helicopter Photography Tour (3 days): A specialised tour designed for photographers, with extended flight time, multiple landing points, and dawn departures for the best light. Includes a photography guide who knows the optimal angles and timing.
Weather and Cancellations
Helicopter flights in the Himalayas are entirely weather-dependent. The pilot makes the final decision on whether to fly based on visibility, wind speed, cloud cover, and conditions at the landing site. Safety is non-negotiable.
In peak season (October to November and March to May), flights operate on roughly 85 to 90 percent of scheduled days. In monsoon (June to August) and deep winter (December to January), the success rate drops significantly. If your flight is cancelled due to weather, you have three options:
- Reschedule to the next available clear day (most common)
- Full refund if rescheduling is not possible within your travel dates
- Convert to a different tour or trek package
We recommend building one buffer day into your Kathmandu schedule. If the helicopter flies on Day 1 as planned, you have a free day to explore Kathmandu. If it is postponed, you have the backup day.
Who Takes This Tour?
Our helicopter tour clients fall into a few distinct categories:
- Business travellers with a Kathmandu stopover and one free day. They want to see Everest but cannot take two weeks off.
- Families with elderly parents who cannot trek but want to see the mountains. We have flown passengers in their eighties.
- Couples celebrating milestones who want a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Proposals at Everest Base Camp have happened on our tours.
- Photographers and content creators who need aerial footage of the Khumbu region.
- Trekkers who ran out of time and could not complete the full EBC trek. Some clients trek to Namche, realise they cannot continue, and helicopter the rest.
Safety
We use experienced pilots with thousands of hours of high-altitude flying in the Khumbu region. The helicopters are Airbus AS350 B3 (Ecureuil) models, specifically designed for high-altitude operations. Every passenger is covered by helicopter insurance. Your guide carries supplemental oxygen in case of altitude discomfort during the ground stop at base camp.
The brief time at altitude (fifteen to twenty minutes at 5,364 metres) is generally not long enough to trigger serious altitude sickness. However, people with heart conditions, severe respiratory problems, or who are pregnant should consult a doctor before booking. The altitude change from Kathmandu (1,400m) to EBC (5,364m) happens in under an hour, which is a significant physiological shift.

Tips for the Best Helicopter Tour Experience
Having arranged hundreds of these tours, here is what makes the difference between a good experience and an exceptional one:
- Book for early morning. The first departure at 7:00 AM has the clearest skies. Afternoon cloud builds over the mountains almost every day, even in peak season. Morning flights have the best visibility and the best photography light.
- Sit on the left side. For the outbound flight from Kathmandu to EBC, the left side of the helicopter gives you the best mountain views. Your guide will advise on seating based on the flight path for the day.
- Bring a proper camera. Your phone will work, but the helicopter windows and the scale of the mountains reward a camera with optical zoom. A polarising filter cuts the glare from snow and ice. Shoot on burst mode during the flight as the helicopter vibrates.
- Eat a light breakfast. You will have a full breakfast at the Everest View Hotel (on Standard and Luxury tiers), so eat lightly before departure. The altitude change can cause mild nausea in some people. A heavy stomach does not help.
- Wear layers you can remove. Kathmandu at 6:00 AM is cool. The helicopter cabin is warm. EBC at 5,364 metres is below freezing. You need to be able to adjust quickly. We provide a down jacket if you need one.
- Do not rush your ground time. You have fifteen to twenty minutes at EBC. It is tempting to spend the entire time taking selfies. Take your photos in the first five minutes, then put your phone away and stand still for a few minutes. Look at Everest. Feel the cold air. Listen to the silence. This is the part you will remember longest.
Helicopter Tours vs Other Ways to See Everest
The helicopter tour is not the only way to see Everest without a full trek. Here is how the options compare:
| Option | Duration | Cost | What You See |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helicopter tour (EBC landing) | 1 day | 4,499+ USD | EBC, Kala Patthar, close-up Everest, Khumbu Icefall |
| Mountain flight (no landing) | 1 hour | 200-350 USD | Himalayan range from aircraft window, no landing |
| Short trek + helicopter (5 days) | 5 days | 3,000-5,000 USD | Namche Bazaar on foot + EBC by helicopter |
| Full EBC trek (12 days) | 12-14 days | 1,072-2,000 USD | Everything, walked and earned |
| Nagarkot sunrise view | Half day | 30-50 USD | Distant Himalayan panorama from hilltop near Kathmandu |
The one-hour mountain flight (offered by Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines) is the most affordable option for seeing the Himalayas from the air, but you do not land and the aircraft is a turboprop with small windows, not a helicopter with panoramic glass. The helicopter tour is in a different league entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can children take the helicopter tour?
Yes. There is no minimum age, but children under two ride on a parent's lap. Children over two require their own seat and pay full price. The brief time at altitude is generally safe for healthy children, but consult your paediatrician if you have concerns.
How much time do I spend at Everest Base Camp?
Fifteen to twenty minutes on the ground. This is enough for photos, a brief walk around the landing area, and the overwhelming experience of standing at the foot of the world's tallest mountain. It is not enough to explore the base camp area extensively.
What if I feel unwell at altitude?
Your guide carries supplemental oxygen. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or have a severe headache, the oxygen helps immediately. The helicopter is right there. You can return to lower altitude within minutes, which is much safer than being days away from evacuation on a trek.
Is this the same as the helicopter rescue flights trekkers use?
No. This is a scheduled scenic tour with planned landings, not an emergency service. The helicopter, pilot, and route are dedicated to the tour. Helicopter rescue is a separate operation for medical emergencies.
What should I wear?
Warm layers. Even in summer, it is below freezing at 5,364 metres. We provide a down jacket if you do not have one. Wear comfortable shoes (not sandals), sunglasses, and sunscreen. The UV at altitude is intense even through helicopter windows.
Can I book this as a surprise for someone?
Yes. We arrange surprise bookings regularly. We can coordinate timing, hotel transfers, and even a celebration at the Everest View Hotel breakfast stop. Contact us with your plans and we will make it work.
