What a hot air balloon flight in Pokhara costs in 2027, how the morning runs, which months it flies, age rules, what you can see and how to book and pay.

Updated 26 October 2026.

Short answer: A hot air balloon flight over Pokhara costs USD 150 per person for foreign passports and USD 120 for SAARC and Chinese passports with us, the same on Budget, Standard and Luxury and the same for a group of one or twenty. You fly about 30 minutes, weather permitting, in the morning or evening, and children under 3 cannot fly. Balloons do not fly in the monsoon months of June, July and August, and on any other day the operator decides on the morning whether it goes.

I am Shreejan. Most people who come to Pokhara jump off something, a hill or a bridge. The balloon is the quiet one, and I get asked about it a lot by couples and by parents with small children. Here is how it works, what it costs and what we still confirm with the operator when you book.

How much does a hot air balloon flight in Pokhara cost in 2027?

On our Hot Air Balloon Flight in Pokhara page the price is USD 150 per person for foreign passport holders and USD 120 for SAARC and Chinese passport holders. It is the same for a private booking and a group, from 1 to 20 people. Budget, Standard and Luxury are all USD 150 because there is only one balloon flight. The option only matters if you add a hotel or transfers to the booking.

A child pays the same as an adult, as our page says. I have not been given a separate child price by the operator, so do not expect one.

PassportPrice per person (2027)
Foreign passportsUSD 150
SAARC and Chinese passportsUSD 120

The price includes the hotel pick-up and drop-off within about 2 km of Lakeside, the flight, CAAN passenger insurance, a flight certificate, government taxes and our service charge. It does not include your Pokhara hotel, getting to Pokhara, meals and drinks, travel insurance for your trip, tips or your visa.

For comparison, a Nepali news report from August 2022 gave USD 100 for foreigners and Rs 8,000 for Nepali tourists. That is old. Prices have moved, so use the number on our page.

How does the morning run?

We collect you from your Lakeside hotel. The take-off point is within about 2 km of Lakeside, so the drive is short. You fly for about 30 minutes, then we take you back to your hotel and you get a flight certificate.

One thing I want you to know early. Whether the balloon goes at all depends on the weather that day, and the operator makes the call, not us and not you. Conditions are checked at the take-off point before the flight starts.

One operator lists a 5:15 am pick-up for a sunrise flight, with the flight starting around 6:15 am. Our slot times are set when you book, so treat that only as a rough idea of how early it is.

Tell us at booking whether you prefer morning or evening. We ask for it, and we cannot promise a slot until it is confirmed.

When can you fly? Season and weather by month

The one firm fact is the monsoon. A Nepali news report says "the monsoon is not an appropriate time for balloon flights", and two operator pages say balloons do not fly in June, July and August. Outside those months the ride runs, if the day allows.

MonthWhat to expect
January, FebruaryFlights run, weather permitting. Cold at altitude, so bring warm clothes and a head covering
March, April, MayFlights run, weather permitting
June, July, AugustNo balloon flights (monsoon)
September, October, NovemberFlights run, weather permitting. Autumn is the main trekking season, so Pokhara is busier and slots fill earlier.
DecemberFlights run, weather permitting. Cold at altitude

No operator publishes how often flights are cancelled, so I will not give you a percentage. You need a clear day to see the big mountains, and a calm one to fly at all. If you have only one night in Pokhara, you are gambling a little. If you have two or three, put the balloon on the first morning and keep the second as a spare.

If the weather changes the plan, we look after the rebooking. Please do not book the balloon for your last morning before an early flight out.

What can you see from the balloon?

This depends on the cloud that morning. On a clear day, operators list the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Mardi Himal and the Lamjung range. Closer in you look down on the Pokhara valley, hills, forest and villages. One operator names Pame Bazar, Fewa Lake and the Panchase ridge from the air.

Different pages quote different heights for Machhapuchhre and the other peaks, so I will not print a number. The height the balloon reaches is also quoted differently, from about 200 m to over 500 m above the ground, so I leave that out too.

A balloon floats with the wind. It is slow and quiet. That is why it suits people who do not want noise or speed.

If you want a lake view from the ground as well, our Fewa Lake guide covers boating and the temple on the island. For mountain views from a hilltop at dawn, read the Sarangkot sunrise guide.

Who can fly? Age, health and what to wear

Children under 3 are not allowed. From 3 up they can fly, but if your child is 3 or 4, think about whether they will stand in a basket for 30 minutes.

The operator has not given us a weight limit or a health list that I can quote. If you are pregnant, have a heart or back problem, or are heavy enough that you wonder, ask us before you pay. We check with the operator and tell you.

What to wear, from our page: sneakers and high socks, trousers you can move in, a cap or hat, and layers. One operator also says no high heels or sandals and no alcohol or other intoxicants before or during the flight. Boarding is at the crew's discretion, so listen to them.

How do you book and pay?

You pay a 10% deposit to book. The balance is paid in Pokhara before your flight, or online. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card. We cover the card fee on the deposit. If you pay the balance by card it carries a 3.5% bank charge, and cash has no fee. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.

We also need a copy of your passport by email before the flight. It is mandatory, and we ask for it when you book.

If the weather stops your flight, we move it to another slot. The 10% deposit is not refunded if you cancel yourself, and you can move your date free with at least 72 hours notice.

Getting to Pokhara, and what to pair it with

Pokhara is a 25-minute flight or about seven hours by tourist bus from Kathmandu. We can book either. Your Pokhara hotel is not in the balloon price.

Many guests do a balloon on one morning and something louder on another day. If you are choosing between the two, read my balloon or paragliding post. Our adventure activities comparison and the paragliding guide cover that. For the whole town, start with things to do in Pokhara.
