Ghorasinga Village Guide: Height Above Rara Lake and the Walk for 2027
Updated 26 October 2026.
Short answer: Ghorasinga is the high point of our 10-day and 12-day Rara Lake treks, at 3,050 m (10,007 ft) on our itineraries. Rara Lake itself is 2,990 m, so you only climb about 60 m above the water. It is a long day, though: our plans show 6 hours up from the lake and 6 hours back. Our 10-day Rara Lake Trek costs USD 2,290 Budget, USD 2,835 Standard and USD 3,615 Luxury per person for two to four people.
I am Shreejan. Most Rara pages give Ghorasinga one line, as the "highest point", and move on. I want to tell you what that day really is, and what I do not know about it.
The lake, the airstrip and the best months are covered in my Rara Lake trek guide and my month-by-month page. This one is only about Ghorasinga.
What is Ghorasinga and how high is it?
Ghorasinga is the overnight stop above Rara Lake in far-west Nepal. On our plan it sits at 3,050 m. The lake is at 2,990 m on our pages, and one magazine piece gives 3,010 m for it, so you will see small differences between sources. I plan with our own numbers.
The lake sits in Rara National Park. Wikipedia says the park was set up in 1976, covers 106 square kilometres and runs from 2,800 m to 4,039 m. It lists 1,070 plant species, 51 mammals and 241 birds.
| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Height of Ghorasinga | 3,050 m (10,007 ft) | Our itineraries |
| Rara Lake | 2,990 m on our pages, 3,010 m in one magazine | Our pages, Nepal Traveller |
| Park | Rara National Park, set up 1976, 106 km2, 2,800 to 4,039 m | Wikipedia |
| Wildlife listed | 1,070 plant species, 51 mammals, 241 birds | Wikipedia |
| Walk up from the lake | About 6 hours | Our itineraries |
| Walk back down | About 6 hours | Our itineraries |
| Lodges, electricity, trail distance | Not published anywhere I can check | None found |
Nepal Traveller, writing about the Rara trek in November 2023, names a night stop it spells "Goru Singhe" before the climb to Chuchemara Danda, which that piece gives as 4,039 m. I believe that is the same place as our Ghorasinga, because the spelling of Nepali place names changes from writer to writer. I cannot prove it from a map, so I say "I believe".
What is the walk to Ghorasinga actually like?
Long. That is the trade-off, and I would rather say it now than have you find out on the trail.
On the 10-day Rara Lake Trek, day 5 is a walk from Rara Lake to Ghorasinga, about 6 hours. Day 6 is the walk back to the lake, about 6 hours again. So you climb to 3,050 m, sleep, and come down the same way. It is an out-and-back, and it means two six-hour days to gain about 60 m of height at the end.
On the 12-day road trip the same walk sits on day 6 and day 7. On the 10-day trek via Jumla it is day 5, trekking in from the Sinja side, and the next day you go on to the lake.
Why do it, then? Because it is the highest point of the trip, and you sleep above the lake. I have not found a published description of the trail itself, so I will not describe the views. What Wikipedia does say is that below 3,200 m the park has blue pine, rhododendron, west Himalayan spruce, black juniper and Himalayan cypress, so expect that kind of woodland around the lake.
If six hours up and six back does not sound like your kind of day, tell me. I can talk through whether the extra night is worth it for you.
Is Ghorasinga high enough for altitude sickness?
For most people, not much. Our page rates the whole Rara trek Moderate and says altitude sickness is rarely a problem, because the lake is at 2,990 m and Ghorasinga is only 60 m higher. The challenge is the remote travel and the long days, not the height.
Anyone can still react at 3,000 m. Drink water, walk slowly and tell your guide how you feel.
Where do you sleep, and is there electricity?
I do not know, and I will not invent it. I have no published list of lodges at Ghorasinga, no room prices and no source on electricity or phone signal. Rara is a remote place, and in the far west lodges can be simple. On our trips we arrange the stay and your guide knows the night before what is open.
The same goes for the distance. I can give you the time (about 6 hours each way) but not a kilometre figure, because I do not have one I can source.
When is the best time to go?
This is from our package pages, month by month.
| Months | What it is like |
|---|---|
| October to November | Clearest and most reliable. Our page calls it the main season |
| March to May | Warm and green, with wildflowers around the lake. A good second season |
| June to mid-September | Monsoon. Rain, cloud and leeches on the approach. Avoid |
| December to February | Cold and snowy, and some lodges shut. Often clear |
For 2027 I would plan October. If you want spring, go in April or May. I have not slept at Ghorasinga in winter, so I will not describe it.
How do you get to Rara and what does it cost?
You have three ways, and they are three different trips. Prices are per person for two to four people, from the live package pages.
| Trip | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rara Lake Trek, 10 days | USD 2,290 | USD 2,835 | USD 3,615 |
| Rara Lake Trek by Road, 12 days | USD 1,010 | USD 1,715 | USD 5,110 |
| Rara Lake Trek via Jumla and the Sinja Valley, 10 days | USD 2,290 | USD 2,835 | USD 3,615 |
The 10-day trek and the Jumla trek fly in. The road trip goes overland and is the cheapest. The Jumla trip has a higher pass than Ghorasinga: Jaljala at about 3,585 m. I wrote up the airstrip side in my Talcha guide and the road side in my Karnali Highway article. Flights to the far west usually go through Nepalgunj, which I describe in the Nepalgunj guide. For how domestic flights work in general, see my domestic flights guide.
Permits are Rara National Park, NPR 3,000 (NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals), and TIMS, NPR 2,000 (NPR 1,000 for SAARC). The Nepal Tourism Board lists both at ntb.gov.np. The standard Rara route is not a restricted area, so there is no special permit. We arrange both and they are in the price.
Kathmandu hotels are not in any tier. The deposit is 10%, and you pay the balance in Kathmandu. Card on the balance carries 3.5%, and cash does not.
Insurance should cover at least 3,500 m on the 10-day and road trips, and 4,000 m on the Jumla trip. Our page says so for the Jumla trek, where the pass is higher.
Frequently asked questions
How high is Ghorasinga near Rara Lake?
3,050 m (10,007 ft) on our itineraries. Rara Lake is 2,990 m, so Ghorasinga is only about 60 m above the water.
Is Ghorasinga the same as Goru Singhe?
I believe so. Nepal Traveller uses "Goru Singhe" for the night stop before Chuchemara Danda, and that fits our Ghorasinga. Spellings differ a lot in Nepal, and I cannot confirm it from a map.
How long is the walk from Rara Lake to Ghorasinga?
About 6 hours up from the lake on our plans, and about 6 hours back the next day. It is a long out-and-back for a small gain in height.
Is there a lodge at Ghorasinga?
I do not have a published lodge list, so I cannot say what is there. We book your stay as part of the trip, and I will not make up names or prices.
Do I need a permit for Ghorasinga?
You need the Rara National Park entry (NPR 3,000, or NPR 1,500 for SAARC) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000, or NPR 1,000 for SAARC). The standard route is not a restricted area. We arrange both.
Can I skip Ghorasinga and just see Rara Lake?
Yes, you can. The lake is the main point of the trip, and on our plan you also get a rest day there. Ghorasinga is the extra night above it. If you want a shorter trip, ask me and I will tell you what changes.
What is the best month to go to Ghorasinga?
October to November is the main season on our pages, and March to May is a good second. Avoid June to mid-September. December to February is cold and some lodges shut.
Which Rara trek goes to Ghorasinga?
All three of ours: the 10-day trek, the 12-day trip by road and the 10-day trek via Jumla. If you want the cheapest, the road trip is USD 1,010 Budget for two to four people.
