Month by month for 2027: when to trek the Langtang Valley, how cold Kyanjin Gompa gets, what rain does to the Syabrubesi road, and what the 8-day trek costs.

Updated 27 October 2026.

Short answer: The best months for the Langtang Valley trek are October and November, then March to May. December to February is possible if you can take nights well below freezing at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m). June to mid-September is monsoon, and the road is the weak point, not only the trail. Our 8-day trek costs USD 490 Budget, USD 1,050 Standard and USD 1,800 Luxury per person for two to four people.

I am Shreejan. People ask me for one month, but the answer depends on what you want from the walk. Clear views, flowers, an empty trail or a lower price all point to different months. Below I go through 2027 month by month. I mark which numbers come from weather records and which are only estimates from trekking operators, and where those disagree.

Langtang Valley trek facts that decide the season

FactDetail
RouteDrive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (7 to 9 hours), walk up the valley, same way back
Start heightSyabrubesi, 1,503 m
Highest nightKyanjin Gompa, 3,870 m
Optional day hikeTserko Ri, about 4,984 m
Length8 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu
Best monthsOctober to November, March to May
Group size1 to 20, always private

The gap between Syabrubesi and Kyanjin Gompa is about 2,370 m. That is why one temperature figure for "Langtang" means little. The first night at Lama Hotel (2,470 m) can feel mild while the same week at Kyanjin is below freezing.

What do the weather records say about Langtang?

I could not find a published weather station at Kyanjin Gompa. The nearest long record is Dhunche, 1,982 m, about 480 m above Syabrubesi and well below Langtang village. The table below is Dhunche's monthly average as listed on Wikipedia, which credits temperature to the Australian National University and rainfall to the Japan International Cooperation Agency. I have not checked the original datasets.

MonthDhunche high / lowDhunche rain
January13.7 / 2.2 °C43 mm
February15.9 / 3.3 °C56 mm
March20.9 / 7.5 °C68 mm
April24.1 / 9.6 °C86 mm
May24.9 / 12.2 °C111 mm
June24.1 / 14.9 °C255 mm
July23.2 / 15.6 °C438 mm
August23.2 / 15.2 °C455 mm
September22.4 / 14.1 °C283 mm
October21.7 / 10.5 °C94 mm
November17.3 / 5.8 °C26 mm
December14.4 / 2.9 °C26 mm

Read it for the pattern, not for the trail. Rain at Dhunche is 10 to 17 times higher in June to August than in November or December. Kyanjin Gompa will be much colder than these lows.

Langtang best time, month by month for 2027

For heights above Dhunche I have no weather station to quote, so I use trekking operators' published estimates. Some give night lows at Kyanjin Gompa for every month. Others give winter figures that are warmer in some months. They do not agree, so I give a range and call it an estimate.

MonthWhat to expectMy view for 2027
JanuaryDhunche is dry and cold. Operators put Kyanjin nights between -10 and -20 °C, with snow above 3,000 m and 30 to 60 cm around Kyanjin and Tserko Ri. Very quiet trailOnly with a four-season sleeping bag and a flexible plan
FebruaryStill cold, ice above 2,500 m, snow starts to melt. Tamang New Year (Sonam Lhosar) is listed for 7 February 2027, so some villages may be celebrating. Confirm the date nearer the timeCold but clearing
MarchSnow leaves the lower trail by mid-March. Rhododendrons start low down. Nights at Kyanjin about -5 to -8 °C by one operator's estimateBetter from the second half
AprilBest spring month. Dhunche reaches 24 °C by day. Rhododendron peak at 2,000 to 2,500 m is late March to early April, and 2,500 to 3,500 m late April to early MayYes
MayWarm lower down, with cloud building in the afternoon. Dhunche rain climbs to 111 mm. Rhododendrons above 3,500 m can last to early JuneYes, best in the first half
JuneMonsoon starts. Dhunche rain jumps to 255 mm. Leeches active below 3,000 m. Views poorNo
JulyWettest. 438 mm at Dhunche, slippery trail, cloud over the peaksNo
AugustWettest. 455 mm at Dhunche. The August 2026 flood hit this road (see below)No
SeptemberStill wet, 283 mm at Dhunche, drying late in the monthLate September at the earliest
OctoberDry. Rainfall falls to 94 mm at Dhunche. This is the peak month for visitorsYes, book early
NovemberDry and clear, 26 mm at Dhunche. Cold nights at Kyanjin, estimated -8 to -12 °C. Fewer people than OctoberYes, my favourite
DecemberDry, short days, snow possible near Kyanjin, Gosainkunda lakes frozenYes, if you pack for it

How busy is Langtang in each season?

There is no public month-by-month count for Langtang that I could find. The Kathmandu Post wrote in October 2019 that the October and November period is when "hordes of tourists descend upon the area", with permits going to about 200 visitors a day at the Brabal check post, and that domestic visitors outnumbered foreigners that season. That is a 2019 picture, but it matches what I see. October is full, November a little calmer, April moderate, and January, February and the monsoon months are quiet.

Is the road to Syabrubesi safe in the monsoon?

The trail is only half of it. Before you walk, you drive 7 to 9 hours up the Trishuli and Rasuwa valley.

On 26 August 2026 a flood came down the Bhote Koshi and hit Timure and Syabrubesi. It did not enter the Langtang valley itself, because the Langtang Khola is a different river. But the road was cut and Syabrubesi was badly damaged. The Kathmandu Post reported on 1 October that Bailey bridge work was starting, and I wrote the full position on our Langtang status page.

The current position, from my own update dated 15 October 2026: the road to Dhunche and Syabrubesi is open again. No hotels are running in Syabrubesi, so on day 1 we walk on from the road head to the first open lodge. I do not have an official government notice to quote for this, and I cannot promise the road stays open into winter. We check road and trail conditions 48 hours before every departure.

In June to August I would not start this trek. This year's flood and the heavy rain of late September both cut roads, and the walking is poor anyway. I have no figure for how often this road closes in a normal monsoon. In the dry months the risk should be lower, but it is not zero, which is why we check.

Which month should I choose for my 2027 trip?

If I were booking for myself I would pick the first half of November, or April. November gives the steadiest sky and the trail is firm. April gives you flowers, warmer lower days and a trail that is not yet crowded.

If your dates are fixed in December or January, you can still go. Plan for short days and a cold Kyanjin. I wrote more on that in Langtang in November and December. For the seasons in detail, read Langtang in autumn and Langtang in spring.

Getting there and what the trek costs in 2027

You do not need a flight. It is one day by road from Kathmandu. The price is per person, in US dollars, and every trek is private with your own licensed guide.

Group sizeBudgetStandardLuxury
1 personUSD 890USD 1,345USD 2,840
2 to 4 peopleUSD 490USD 1,050USD 1,800
5 to 8 peopleUSD 460USD 980USD 1,675

These are the prices on our Langtang trek, 8 days page, checked 25 October 2026. Permits are in the price: Langtang National Park NPR 3,000 and a TIMS card NPR 2,000, per the Nepal Tourism Board fees. Your Kathmandu hotel, flights, visa and insurance are not in the price. On Budget there is no porter and meals are not included. On Standard one porter carries bags for two of you. On Luxury you have your own porter.

Your insurance must cover the highest point you reach. If you plan Tserko Ri at about 4,984 m, buy cover to 5,000 m. The deposit is 10%, and you pay the balance in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros. Cash has no charge. A card payment carries 3.5%.

If you want to add the lakes, our Langtang Gosainkunda trek, 13 days has its own season notes. The Laurebina pass (4,610 m) is the reason it needs a clear spring or autumn window. For how hard the walking is, see how difficult is the Langtang Valley trek.

When is the best time for Langtang Valley trek?

October to November and March to May. If I had to name one month, November.

Can I trek Langtang in December?

Yes. Days are dry and short, the nights at Kyanjin are well below freezing, and snow is possible. Take a sleeping bag rated to -10 °C or lower. The Gosainkunda lakes will be frozen.

Is Langtang open in March?

Yes. Snow leaves the lower trail by mid-March and the rhododendrons start low down. Early March can still have snow patches above 4,000 m, so I prefer the second half.

Can you do the Langtang trek in monsoon?

You can walk it, but I will not sell it for June to August. Rain at Dhunche is 255 to 455 mm a month from June to August, leeches are active in the forest and the views are poor. The road is also the part I trust least in those months.

Is the Langtang road open for 2027?

As of 15 October 2026 the road to Dhunche and Syabrubesi is open again, with no hotels running in Syabrubesi. I cannot say what it will be in spring 2027 until closer to the date. We check every departure 48 hours ahead.

When do the rhododendrons bloom in Langtang?

It depends on the height. Trekking operators' published estimates put the peak at 2,000 to 2,500 m in late March to early April, and 2,500 to 3,500 m from late April to early May. April is the safest month to see them.

How cold does Kyanjin Gompa get?

In January operators estimate -10 to -20 °C at night, and in April about 0 to 5 °C. Their figures disagree, so treat them as estimates and dress for colder than you expect.
