October on the Everest Base Camp trail, week by week: temperatures at Namche and Dingboche, crowds, Manthali Lukla flights, moon dates and 2027 prices.

Updated 26 October 2026.

Short answer: October is the busiest month on the Everest Base Camp trail and one of the two best for clear skies. Plan on cold nights from Namche up (the average low at Namche is 1.2 degrees, at Dingboche about minus 5), full lodges above Namche by early afternoon, and a Lukla flight that most likely leaves from Manthali (Ramechhap) after a night drive. Our 12-day trek for October 2027 costs USD 1,399 Budget, USD 2,785 Standard and USD 4,999 Luxury per person for two to four people. Keep two spare days before your flight home.

I am Shreejan. I have written about autumn and about November already, so this page is only about October, week by week, for people who have picked 2027. If you want the two-month comparison, read Everest Base Camp trek in autumn first. For the colder, quieter month after this one, see EBC in November.

Is October a good month for the Everest Base Camp trek?

Yes, with two catches. The first is people. Everybody knows October is good, so the trail is full. The second is the first ten days. The monsoon has finished, but Lukla still averages 102.9 mm of rain in October, against 6.2 mm in November. That rain falls mostly early in the month.

The views are the reward. The air has been washed for four months, and the mornings are sharp. Cloud builds from the south in the afternoon, so the big views are an early-morning thing. That does not change from week to week.

The Lukla, Namche and Tengboche figures are long-term station averages, not a forecast. They are the same numbers I use in my month-by-month weather guide, from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (Lukla), FAO (Namche) and FAO with the Australian National University (Tengboche). Dingboche comes from a computer model. For Gorak Shep, I take Dingboche's low and subtract about 5 degrees for the extra 750 m of height, using the standard 6.5 degrees per 1,000 m. That is a calculation, not a thermometer reading.

What is October like week by week?

This is the part the other pages do not give you. The weeks are not the same.

1 to 10 October

The first half of October can bring afternoon showers, and snow at Gorak Shep is possible. I have no weekly rainfall figure, only the monthly one above, so I cannot tell you which day the rain stops. The moon is new around 1 October, so the first nights are dark and the stars are very good.

11 to 20 October

The weather is usually steadier and the trail is busy. Our guides count the weeks around 10 to 30 October as the busiest. The full moon is around 15 October, which is useful: on a clear night you can walk by moonlight to Kala Patthar and the trail is easy to see, though you still carry a headtorch.

21 to 31 October

Still busy, and the nights get colder fast. The new moon around 29 October gives dark skies again. There is one risk I want you to know about. In my experience, in two of the last few autumns the tail of a Bay of Bengal cyclone clipped Nepal in the last week of October, with heavy snow and cloud high up and Lukla flights grounded. It is not every year. It is the reason I want a spare day at the end of your trip.

The moon dates come from published lunar calendars (Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, and the Old Farmer's Almanac). They can differ by a day depending on the time zone, so treat them as around those dates.

How crowded is the Everest Base Camp trail in October?

Busy, and I can put some numbers on the air traffic, because the flights are public. On a good-weather day in early October 2025, the Kathmandu newspaper Ekantipur reported 300 flights in one day and 1,600 tourists entering the Lukla area. That was when the weather improved after a bad spell and flights restarted.

That is the whole story of October in one report. When the weather clears, everybody who was waiting goes at once. That is my reading of the report, not something it says. The trail between Lukla and Namche fills, the suspension bridges queue, and the lodges above Namche fill by early afternoon. I do not have an official count of trekkers on the trail for a given day in October 2027, and nobody can have one this early.

What crowding means in practice:

  • You may be given the last room, not the room you wanted, if you arrive at Dingboche or Lobuche after 3 pm.
  • The dining room is busier and dinner takes longer. Lodges run on a first-come basis for heated space.
  • We start walking around 6:30 to 7:00 am so we reach the next lodge before the afternoon rush. On our own departures we book the lodges ahead.

If you want the same views with fewer people, early November is clearly quieter, as I wrote in the November guide. Or leave the main trail, as in the autumn guide where I describe the Gokyo option.

Will Lukla flights leave from Manthali in October 2027?

Probably, but nobody has published 2027 arrangements yet. In the busy windows (roughly 25 September to 30 November) most scheduled Lukla flights leave from Manthali in Ramechhap, not Kathmandu. That window is from my own Ramechhap guide, and it can change at short notice. An Ekantipur report of 4 October 2026 says Manthali to Lukla flights were increased this autumn and that preparations are under way for Kathmandu to Ramechhap flights. It gives no dates and no operators, so I cannot tell you when or whether that would replace the road.

What this means for you today is the drive: about 130 km, 4 to 5 hours, and a hotel pickup between midnight and 2 am. I wrote it up in full in Ramechhap vs Lukla. Our guests are driven there and back as part of the price. On the fare list our ticketing agent worked from in August 2026, a foreigner pays USD 208.65 per sector from Ramechhap and USD 254.00 from Kathmandu. Those are 2026 fares. The airlines set the 2027 ones.

Flights stop when the weather does. In October 2022 the Himalayan Times reported that Lukla flights had been halted for three days and hundreds of tourists were stuck at Ramechhap. I cannot tell you the cancellation rate, because it is not published. Our Kathmandu to Lukla flight guide explains why Lukla is so sensitive (short runway, mountain on three sides, pilots need to see it).

My advice is plain. Our 12-day itinerary has no spare day, so keep two free days in Kathmandu before your flight home. If you cannot, ask about the Luxury tier, which uses a round-trip helicopter from Kathmandu to Lukla. A helicopter also waits for a clear window, but it skips the Manthali drive.

Are Dashain and Tihar in October 2027?

I do not know yet, and I will not guess. The Nepal government publishes the holiday list for the new Nepali year (2084 BS) as a gazette notice, and as of 26 October 2026 I could not find an official 2027 date for either festival. Both follow the lunar calendar, so they move every year. For comparison, the government notice for 2026 lists Dashain as 17 to 23 October and Tihar as 8 to 12 November.

Why it matters: during Dashain many Nepalis travel home, domestic flights are heavy, Kathmandu offices close, and some small lodges close while staff go to their villages. Larger lodges stay open. When the 2027 notice comes out I will add the dates here and move departures if needed.

How much does the Everest Base Camp trek cost in October 2027?

The price is the same all year. Prices below were checked on the live page on 25 October 2026, per person, for two to four people.

Group sizeBudgetStandardLuxury
1 personUSD 2,275USD 3,345USD 5,640
2 to 4 peopleUSD 1,399USD 2,785USD 4,999
5 to 8 peopleUSD 1,305USD 2,595USD 4,949

Permits and your guide are in the price. Standard has one porter for every two guests, so each guest's bag is about 10 kg. Luxury has your own porter. Budget has no porter. The law allows a porter to carry 20 kg at most.

The government fees we buy for you are Sagarmatha National Park NPR 3,000 (NTB park entry fees), the Khumbu local municipality fee NPR 3,000 and the TIMS card NPR 2,000 (NTB TIMS page).

Not in the price: international flights, your Nepal visa, travel insurance, your Kathmandu hotel, tips, and on Budget your teahouse meals. A meal with tea or coffee in an Everest teahouse is about NPR 2,000 at current prices, and less lower down. Your insurance must cover the highest point of the trek. Kala Patthar is 5,545 m, so cover to 6,000 m with helicopter rescue, as in this insurance guide. For the full breakdown see Everest Base Camp trek cost.

A 10% deposit confirms your dates. We cover the 3.5% card charge on the deposit. You pay the balance in Kathmandu, in US dollars or euros. Cash has no charge. A card payment carries 3.5%.

How far ahead should I book for October 2027?

I would start talking to us by spring 2027, and earlier if you need a fixed date, because October is the month everybody wants. I cannot quote a published booking deadline for the lodges or flights, because there is not one. What I can say is what I see: the lodges above Namche fill, and the flights do not wait for you. The earlier we have your dates, the more of the trail we can fix in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is October or November better for Everest Base Camp?

October is warmer and busier, with showers in the first ten days. November is colder and clearer. If you want the best of both, mid-October to early November. I compare the two in the autumn guide.

How cold is Everest Base Camp in October?

Namche has an average low of 1.2 degrees and Dingboche about minus 5. Gorak Shep has no weather station, and my calculation puts an average night near minus 10. Days are mild in the sun. We provide a sleeping bag and down jacket on every tier. The full kit is in the packing list.

Is October too crowded for Everest Base Camp?

It is the busiest month, but it is not a queue the whole way. The pinch points are Lukla to Namche, the bridges and the lodges above Namche in the afternoon. Starting early helps a lot.

Which airport do Lukla flights use in October?

Most likely Manthali in Ramechhap, as in autumn 2026. A few flights, and helicopters, still go from Kathmandu. We tell you the airport a few days before departure and arrange the transfer.

Can the Everest Base Camp trek be done in October with no experience?

You do not need climbing skills. You need to be fit enough to walk 5 to 7 hours a day at altitude. The 12-day plan has rest days at Namche and Dingboche. Read the altitude sickness guide before you go.

What is the best week in October for Everest Base Camp?

There is no perfect week. The first days risk showers, the weeks from about 10 October are the busiest, and the last week carries the small cyclone risk I described. If I must pick, I pick roughly 10 to 25 October and leave a spare day at the end.

Do I need a guide for Everest Base Camp in October 2027?

The NTB says a licensed guide and TIMS card are required on most trekking routes, and the Everest region is on its list. Every trek we run has a licensed guide.
