Upper Mustang Trek Distance and Difficulty: What the Forbidden Kingdom Demands

The Upper Mustang trek covers approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) over fifteen trekking days. The maximum altitude is 3,840 metres at Lo Manthang — lower than most major Nepal treks. The difficulty comes not from altitude or extreme terrain but from distance, remoteness, wind, and the relentless aridity of a landscape that feels more like Tibet than Nepal.

What Is the Total Distance?

The standard Upper Mustang trek (15 days) from Jomsom (2,720m) to Lo Manthang (3,840m) and back covers 155 to 165 kilometres. The route follows the Kali Gandaki valley north through progressively drier terrain, crossing the old salt trading route that connected Tibet to the Indian plains for centuries.

Unlike circuit treks (Annapurna, Manaslu), Upper Mustang is an out-and-back route. You walk north to Lo Manthang, spend two days exploring the walled city, then walk south on the same trail. Some itineraries take a slightly different return route through Ghar Gompa and Drakmar, adding variety without significantly changing the total distance.

The return days are longer because you cover two outbound days in one. Day 9 (22 km) and Day 10 (20 km) are the longest walking days. They are mostly flat or downhill but still demanding after a week on the trail.

What Is the Difficulty Rating?

We rate Upper Mustang at 3 out of 5 — moderate. The difficulty is not altitude (you never go above 3,840m) but endurance, climate, and remoteness.

  • Altitude: Low for Nepal. Maximum 3,840m — below the altitude sickness threshold for most people.
  • Physical fitness: Moderate-High. You walk 10 to 22 km per day for twelve walking days.
  • Technical skills: None. The trail is a wide path — in some places, a jeep track.
  • Climate: The real challenge. Wind, dust, and sun in a high-altitude desert. SPF 50, lip balm, and a buff for your face are essential.
  • Duration: Fifteen days including rest days in Lo Manthang.

What Makes Upper Mustang Difficult?

The Wind

The Kali Gandaki valley funnels wind from the Tibetan plateau southward every afternoon. By 1:00 or 2:00 pm, gusts reach 40 to 60 kilometres per hour — strong enough to push you sideways on the trail and fill your eyes, ears, and camera with fine dust. Every Upper Mustang itinerary starts early (7:00 am) to cover maximum distance before the afternoon wind arrives.

The wind is not dangerous but it is exhausting. Walking into a headwind at 3,500 metres doubles your perceived effort. Walking with a tailwind feels like cheating. Your guide plans the direction of each day to take advantage of wind patterns where possible.

The Aridity

Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Annual rainfall is under 200mm — less than most deserts. The air is dry enough to crack your lips, dehydrate you faster than you expect, and turn your skin to sandpaper by day three. Drink at least three litres of water per day and moisturise every night.

The Long Return Days

Walking 20 to 22 kilometres on the return is the physically hardest part of the trek. You have been walking for a week. Your legs are tired. The scenery is familiar because you walked through it six days ago. And the afternoon wind is pushing against you on some sections. These are grind days that test your mental endurance more than your physical fitness.

How Does Upper Mustang Compare to Other Treks?

EBC130 km5,545m4/5Sustained high altitude

Upper Mustang is a cultural trek first and a physical trek second. The difficulty is real but the reward is not a mountain summit or a pass crossing — it is Lo Manthang, a medieval walled city that feels like stepping into a different century. The cave monasteries, the Tibetan art, and the wind-carved landscape are what you remember, not the kilometres.

Can a Beginner Do Upper Mustang?

Yes — with one caveat. The daily distances (up to 22 km) require endurance that beginners often underestimate. You do not need altitude fitness or technical skills, but you need to be comfortable walking 15+ kilometres for consecutive days on uneven terrain. If you can handle that, Upper Mustang is one of the most accessible restricted-area treks in Nepal.

The lack of extreme altitude makes it a good choice for older trekkers, people who struggle above 4,000 metres, or anyone who wants a Himalayan experience without the physical extremes of EBC or the Annapurna Circuit.
