Short Trek to Namche with an Everest Base Camp Helicopter in 5 Days: Route, Cost and Who It Suits (2027)
Updated 17 October 2026.
Short answer: Our 5-day Short Trek to Namche with a helicopter to Everest Base Camp is two days of real Khumbu trekking from Lukla to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), a rest day with a walk up to the Everest View Hotel, and then a private helicopter on day 4 to the Everest Base Camp area before you land back in Lukla. You fly to Kathmandu on day 5. For two to four people it costs USD 2,875 per person on Budget, USD 3,325 on Standard and USD 4,355 on Luxury. It suits people who want to see Everest from close range, have about a week, and do not want to walk for twelve days.
I am Shreejan. I put this trip together for the traveller who wants the Khumbu on foot first, so they earn a little of the view, and then wants the helicopter to do the high, cold, slow part. Here is how the five days run, what each tier gives you, what it really costs and what could go wrong.

How do the five days run?
Day 1. You fly Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860 m), about 35 minutes, and walk down the Dudh Koshi valley to Phakding (2,610 m), around three to four hours. In the busy seasons the Lukla flights leave from Manthali (Ramechhap) instead of Kathmandu, so we collect you from your hotel around midnight and drive you there, 4 to 5 hours, and the drive is included. There is more on this in our Ramechhap versus Kathmandu guide.
Day 2. Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), about six hours. The trail crosses suspension bridges, passes the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint at Monjo and then climbs steeply for around 600 m. It is the hardest walking of the trip. Namche is the Sherpa market town, and you sleep here two nights. See our Namche Bazaar guide.
Day 3. Rest and acclimatisation. You walk up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for a first clear look at Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, come down through Khumjung and sleep again in Namche. The idea is to climb high and sleep low, so your body is ready for the helicopter.
Day 4. The helicopter day. The private helicopter flies from Syangboche, above Namche, up the valley past Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche, and lands near Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp where conditions and permits allow. Expect only about 15 to 20 minutes on the ground at that height. Then it flies on to Lukla, where you spend the night.
Day 5. Fly Lukla to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel.
What does it cost?
Prices are per person in US dollars, read from our booking system on 17 October 2026. The trip page always has the current list.
| Group size | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | USD 4,800 | USD 5,215 | USD 6,450 |
| 2 to 4 people | USD 2,875 | USD 3,325 | USD 4,355 |
| 5 to 8 people | USD 2,620 | USD 3,095 | USD 4,310 |
| 9 to 12 people | USD 2,425 | USD 2,890 | USD 4,075 |
| 13 to 20 people | USD 2,315 | USD 2,810 | USD 3,980 |
The helicopter is the big cost, and a helicopter does not get cheaper for one passenger. That is why a solo traveller pays far more per person than a group of four who share one aircraft. If you are travelling alone, the price is the true cost of the trip for one person, and I would rather say so than hide it.
What is the difference between Budget, Standard and Luxury?
| Budget | Standard | Luxury | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meals on the trek | Not included; you buy your own | Three meals a day plus fruit | All meals, fruit and nuts, and soft drinks whenever you want them |
| Rooms | Shared teahouse room | Private twin room, with bathroom where possible | Private deluxe room with bathroom where available |
| Porter | None | 1 per 2 trekkers | 1 for every trekker |
| Flight to Lukla | Scheduled flight | Scheduled flight | A seat on a shared helicopter, no Ramechhap drive |
| Helicopter to Everest Base Camp | Private to your group, up to 4 guests per helicopter, on every tier | ||
Every tier includes the Sagarmatha National Park permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee, the TIMS card, an English-speaking licensed guide, airport pick-up and drop, a first-aid kit with a pulse oximeter and government taxes. A Standard porter carries up to 20 kg between two trekkers, which is 10 kg each. If you travel alone on Standard there is no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your bag. A porter of your own can be added for USD 25 a day plus 13 per cent VAT and the 3.5 per cent bank charge.
Not included on any tier: your Kathmandu hotel, international flights, your Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips, alcohol and extra costs from delays outside our control, such as bad weather or strikes.

| Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee | NPR 3,000 | Every tier |
| TIMS card | NPR 2,000 | Every tier |
What is the best time to go, month by month?
| Months | What to expect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| October to November | Clearest mornings after the monsoon, the best window for the helicopter | Best overall |
| December to February | Very clear but cold, with the odd windy day that holds a flight | Good |
| March to April | Clear and warmer; the busiest weeks for Lukla flights | Great |
| May | Still the pre-monsoon season, with the Manthali flight arrangement until mid-May | Possible |
| June to mid-September | Monsoon cloud grounds flights | Avoid |
| Late September | The monsoon ends in mid-September; Lukla flights run from Manthali again from 25 September | Possible |
The Lukla flights run from Manthali from about 15 March to 15 May and from 25 September to 30 November.
Is the altitude a problem?
You walk no higher than 3,880 m, and you spend a rest day in Namche first, so the climb is gentle. The helicopter then takes you to about 5,500 m for a short stop. That is high enough to make some people light-headed or short of breath, even after a rest day, so move slowly on the ground and do what the pilot and your guide tell you. Your guide carries a pulse oximeter. Tell us before you book if you have any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, and read our altitude guide.
What insurance do you need?
Your policy should cover helicopter flights and altitude up to 6,000 m, because Kala Patthar is about 5,545 m. Buy it at home before you travel; we do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal. A rescue helicopter is paid by your insurer, so check the wording. Our guide to insurance for Everest Base Camp explains what to look for.
Weather, delays and buffer days
Both the Lukla flight and the Everest helicopter fly only in safe conditions. If the helicopter cannot go on day 4, we reschedule it, and your safety comes first. Keep a spare day or two before your flight home. If the Lukla flight is cancelled, here is what happens and what it costs.
Is this the right trip for you?
If you only want to see Everest from the air in one morning, the one-day Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is simpler. If you want to walk to base camp and fly home, the 10-day trek with a helicopter return gives you far more of the valley. If you want mountain views on foot with no helicopter, look at the 7-day Everest View trek or the full 12-day Everest Base Camp trek. For a straight comparison read mountain flight, helicopter or trek, and for the helicopter prices alone, the Everest helicopter cost guide.
Questions people ask
How much does a short Everest trek with a helicopter cost? For two to four people it is USD 2,875 per person on Budget, USD 3,325 on Standard and USD 4,355 on Luxury. A solo traveller pays USD 4,800, USD 5,215 or USD 6,450.
Does the helicopter land at Everest Base Camp? It lands near Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp where conditions and permits allow, for about 15 to 20 minutes. The pilot decides on the day, so a landing is never certain.
Is the helicopter shared with other groups? No. On this trip the helicopter is for your own group only, with up to four guests per helicopter.
Do I need to be fit? You should be comfortable walking 4 to 6 hours a day on uneven ground for two days. You do not need trekking experience.
Is Kathmandu accommodation included? No. Tell us your budget and we will book a hotel that fits, from a simple guesthouse to a five-star.
What if the weather stops the helicopter? We reschedule the flight for the next safe day. That is why a buffer day before your flight home matters.
Can I add a longer trek instead? Yes. The 10-day Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return is the usual next step up.
What are the booking terms?
Group size is 1 to 20, and solo travellers are welcome. The deposit is 10 per cent. It is non-refundable and there is no refund if you cancel, but you can move your trip free of charge to any date within one year with at least 72 hours notice. If we cannot run the trip ourselves, we refund what you paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent, such as permits and flights. The balance is paid when you arrive, in US dollars or euros, cash or card. Card carries a 3.5 per cent bank charge and cash carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
