What a 5, 6 or 7 day Langtang trek really looks like: where you sleep, what you cut, how fast is too fast, Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri, and the road to Syabrubesi.

Updated 25 October 2026.

Short answer: You can do the Langtang valley in 7 days from Kathmandu if you drop the rest day at Kyanjin Gompa. Six days works if you turn around at Langtang village and day-trip to Kyanjin. Five days on foot gets you to Langtang village (3,430 m) and no further. Our full 8-day trek is USD 490 Budget, USD 1,050 Standard and USD 1,800 Luxury per person for two to four people. The 5, 6 and 7 day versions have no published price, so I quote them on request.

I am Shreejan. Every week someone asks me for Langtang in five days because that is all the leave they have. Sometimes it can be done. Sometimes the answer is to pick a different trek. Below is what each length looks like, what you lose, and where I would not cut.

How is the 8-day Langtang trek built?

Start with our standard plan on the Langtang trek, 8 days, because every shorter version is a cut from it. The heights and times are from that itinerary.

DayRouteSleepTime
1Drive Kathmandu to SyabrubesiSyabrubesi, 1,503 m7 to 9 hours by road
2Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel, 11.3 km2,470 mAbout 6 hours
3Lama Hotel to Langtang village, 14.8 km3,430 mAbout 6 hours
4Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa, 6.8 km3,870 mAbout 3 hours
5Rest day at Kyanjin Gompa, optional hike3,870 mYour choice
6Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel, 21 km2,470 m7 to 8 hours
7Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi, 11.3 kmSyabrubesiAbout 5 hours
8Drive Syabrubesi to KathmanduYour Kathmandu hotel7 to 9 hours by road

Two of the eight days are bus days. That is the first thing to understand. You are not cutting from eight walking days. You are cutting from six, and the road at each end does not get shorter.

Can you do Langtang in 7 days?

Yes. This is the one I am happy to run. You keep the same route and the same sleeping places, and you lose the rest day at Kyanjin Gompa.

Days 1 to 4 are as above, so you reach Kyanjin Gompa on day 4 after only three hours of walking that morning. Day 5 is the long walk down to Lama Hotel, day 6 is Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi, and day 7 is the drive home.

What you give up is the Tserko Ri or Kyanjin Ri morning. The Kyanjin Ri climb is about two hours up, gaining roughly 900 m from Kyanjin Gompa (see our Kyanjin Ri guide). If you do it first thing on day 5, you start the 21 km walk to Lama Hotel in the late morning and finish in the dark. So in the 7-day plan the only realistic option is to arrive at Kyanjin by lunch on day 4 and let the guide decide, with the oximeter, whether a short afternoon climb is sensible. If anyone has a headache, we do not go up.

Can you do Langtang in 6 days?

Only if you change the shape of the trip. There are two ways, and I will tell you which one I prefer.

The way I prefer: turn around at Langtang village. Day 1 drive, day 2 Lama Hotel, day 3 Langtang village (3,430 m). On day 4 you walk to Kyanjin Gompa and back, about 6.8 km each way, and you sleep at Langtang village again. Day 5 is a very long day, most of the way back to Syabrubesi through Lama Hotel. We only do it with fit walkers, and it is hard on the knees. Day 6 is the drive.

The way I do not prefer: sleep at Kyanjin on day 3. You would walk from Lama Hotel (2,470 m) to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) in one day, about 21.6 km and 9 hours, and your sleeping height jumps 1,400 m. People do it, but that is a lot of height to gain in one night.

Can you do Langtang in 5 days?

On foot, you reach Langtang village and come back. Day 1 drive, day 2 Lama Hotel, day 3 Langtang village, day 4 the very long descent, most of the way back to Syabrubesi, day 5 drive. You see the valley, the rebuilt village and the memorial. You do not see Kyanjin Gompa, the glacier or the cheese factory.

These 5 and 6 day plans are our suggested outlines, and we confirm them when we quote. For the other 5-day version, walking up in three days and flying out, a helicopter pickup can sometimes be arranged; ask us for a quote. If you only want the view and have a day or two, our Langtang helicopter day tour from Kathmandu lands at Kyanjin Gompa and is priced on its own page.

Is it safe to go fast in Langtang?

It is safer than most short treks, because Kyanjin Gompa is 3,870 m, not 5,000 m. But fast is still fast.

The advice in the CDC Yellow Book, which takes it from the Wilderness Medical Society, is to move your sleeping altitude by no more than 500 m per night once you are above 3,000 m, and to add an extra night to acclimatise for every 1,000 m of sleeping height gained. Now look at the standard plan. Lama Hotel to Langtang village is a gain of 960 m in sleeping height. That is already above the 500 m guide on day 3, and it is the reason we keep a rest day at Kyanjin. The CDC also says these rules can be too fast for some people, so they are a starting point and not a guarantee.

The six-day Kyanjin version above sleeps you 1,400 m higher in one jump. That is almost three times the guide figure. The 7-day plan keeps the 960 m and 440 m steps but loses the spare night, so there is no room to wait out a bad night. Our guides carry a pulse oximeter, check everyone daily, and if you feel unwell we do not climb higher. That rule does not change at any length.

For more on the symptoms, read our altitude sickness guide for Nepal.

Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri on a short trip?

If you only have time for one, choose Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 m. It is about two hours up from Kyanjin Gompa. Tserko Ri is about 4,984 m, and our own difficulty guide describes it as a 1,114 m gain in roughly 4 km, with a boulder scramble at the top. That is a full morning, and it needs the rest day.

My rule: Tserko Ri only on the 8-day plan, with a night already slept at Kyanjin. On shorter plans, Kyanjin Ri if the guide agrees, or nothing. The detail is in the Tserko Ri guide.

One practical point. Insurance must cover the trek's highest point rounded up to the next 500 m. For either hike that means cover to 5,000 m, including helicopter evacuation.

Is the road to Syabrubesi open?

As of 15 October 2026, the road to Dhunche and Syabrubesi is open again after the flood of 26 August. That is our own check and it is on the Rasuwa flood status post. I did not find an independent October report to back it up.

In late September the Kathmandu Post (19 September 2026) was still reporting mud and steep cliffs slowing repairs on Nepal's flood-hit roads, and Onlinekhabar (22 September 2026) described the Syabrubesi to Rasuwagadhi stretch as severely affected. Roads here change fast, so treat all of this as a snapshot.

The part that matters for a short trip: there are no hotels running in Syabrubesi at the moment. On day 1 we walk on from the road head to the first open lodge on the trail. That cuts into your day 1 as well as day 2, and it changes where you sleep on the return. We check road and trail conditions 48 hours before every departure.

Best time for a short Langtang trek, month by month

  • January and February: clear and cold, snow near Kyanjin Gompa, nights down to -5 C or lower. Only with warm gear.
  • March: Kyanjin Gompa averages 8 C by day and -7 C at night. Late March is better than early.
  • April: the best spring month. Rhododendrons peak between Lama Hotel and Langtang village. Kyanjin averages 12 C by day and -3 C at night.
  • May: pre-monsoon, 14 C by day and 0 C at night, and almost daily afternoon rain by late May. Early May only.
  • June to August: monsoon. Heavy rain, leeches and cloud. I would not go.
  • September: the air clears in late September at the earliest.
  • October and November: dry and clear, the main season. November is cold, so bring a sleeping bag rated to -10 C.
  • December: cold with short days. Fine if you pack for it.

Monthly figures are from our Langtang trek page. Our October Langtang guide has more on the main season.

Getting there and what it costs

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi takes 7 to 9 hours by road. There are no flights. Arrive in Kathmandu by 4:00 pm the day before for the briefing, because the drive leaves early.

The trek price covers the guide, the park permit, TIMS and transport to and from Syabrubesi. Your international flights, the Nepal visa (USD 50 for 30 days on arrival), insurance, your Kathmandu hotel and tips are not included. On Budget, meals are not included either, and the package page puts them at about USD 15 to 25 a day.

Porters: Budget has none, so you carry your own bag. On Standard one porter is shared by two trekkers, 10 kg each. On Luxury you have your own porter, with your bag up to 20 kg. The legal limit is 20 kg per porter.

To book, you pay a 10% deposit (about USD 49 on Budget) by card, and the balance in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros. Paying the balance by card carries 3.5%. Paying in cash in Kathmandu has none.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shortest Langtang trek you can do?

On foot, five days: drive, Lama Hotel, Langtang village, a long walk down to Syabrubesi, drive. You do not reach Kyanjin Gompa. To reach Kyanjin Gompa on foot both ways, I plan seven days.

Can you reach Kyanjin Gompa in 5 days?

Walking both ways in five days does not work, because the 21 km day from Kyanjin to Lama Hotel and the bus days leave no room. A helicopter pickup can sometimes be arranged; ask us for a quote.

How much does a 5, 6 or 7 day Langtang trek cost?

I do not publish a price for those lengths. The 8-day trek is USD 490, USD 1,050 or USD 1,800 per person for two to four people. Message me your dates and group size and I will quote the shorter plan.

Is 7 days enough for the Langtang valley trek?

Yes, for fit walkers. You lose the rest day and the Tserko Ri morning. You keep Kyanjin Gompa, the glacier and the Langtang village memorial.

Do I need a guide for Langtang?

The Nepal Tourism Board lists Langtang among the routes where a guide and a TIMS card are mandatory. All our treks have a licensed guide. See the Langtang permits guide for what the permits cost.

Is the road to Langtang open in 2027?

I cannot say what the road will be like in 2027. As of 15 October 2026 it is open to Dhunche and Syabrubesi, and there are no hotels in Syabrubesi, so we walk on to the first open lodge. We check 48 hours before each departure.
