Annapurna Base Camp Trek in October: Clear Skies and the Mountain Amphitheatre
Is October the Best Month for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
For most trekkers, yes. October gives you the clearest views of Annapurna I, Machapuchare, and the surrounding peaks, with stable weather and temperatures that make the walk genuinely pleasant. The monsoon has cleared, the trails are dry, and the teahouses are fully staffed for peak season.
The Annapurna Base Camp trek is already one of the most accessible treks in Nepal — 9 to 11 days, moderate difficulty, stunning mountain amphitheatre at the end. In October, it also happens to be one of the most rewarding. You walk through terraced farmland, subtropical forest, and alpine meadow before arriving at a 360-degree ring of peaks above 7,000m. On a clear October morning at base camp, there is nothing else like it.
What Is the Weather Like?
Nayapul to Ghorepani (1,070-2,860m): Warm during the day, 18 to 25°C. You are walking through lower valleys with rice paddies and villages. Mornings can be misty, clearing by 10am. The occasional afternoon shower is possible in early October as the monsoon tail lingers, but nothing sustained.
Ghorepani to Deurali (2,860-3,230m): Cooler, 12 to 20°C during the day. This is the transition zone where rhododendron forests give way to bamboo and then scrubby alpine vegetation. Nights drop to 3 to 8°C. If you are doing the Poon Hill sunrise detour, expect 0 to 5°C at the viewpoint before dawn.
Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (3,230-4,130m): Cold mornings and evenings, -5 to 10°C. Days can be surprisingly warm when the sun hits the amphitheatre directly — sheltered from wind, temperatures inside the bowl can reach 12 to 15°C at midday. But once the sun drops behind Machapuchare in the late afternoon, temperatures plummet fast.
How Crowded Is the Trail?
Busier than November or March, but manageable. The ABC trail is shorter and more popular than the Annapurna Circuit, so it sees more concentrated traffic. The busiest section is Ghorepani to Tadapani — this is also the Poon Hill route, so short-trek trekkers add to the numbers.
Above Deurali, the trail thins out. By the time you reach Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700m) and then ABC, you are typically sharing the trail with a reasonable number of groups. The amphitheatre itself has space — it is a wide, flat glacial basin, not a narrow path.
Teahouses book up in peak October. Our guides reserve rooms in advance, which matters especially at ABC itself — there are only a few lodges at base camp, and arriving without a booking means sleeping in the dining room.
What Makes ABC Special in October?
The amphitheatre view: On a clear October morning at ABC, you see Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Machapuchare (6,993m), Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III in a single panoramic sweep. The peaks surround you on three sides. It is Nepal's most dramatic mountain viewpoint, and October gives you the best chance of seeing it without cloud.
Poon Hill sunrise: The Ghorepani detour adds one day and gives you the classic sunrise view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna from 3,210m. In October, the success rate for clear sunrises is around 80%. Arrive early — the viewing platform gets crowded.
Accessible and short: 9 to 11 days, no internal flights, no high passes. The highest point is 4,130m, well below the altitude where serious sickness becomes common. This makes ABC ideal for first-time trekkers who want a genuine Himalayan experience without the time commitment or altitude risk of EBC.
What Should You Pack?
The ABC trek spans a 3,000m elevation range, so layering is essential. At Nayapul you will be in shorts; at base camp you will be in your down jacket.
Key items: a down jacket (we provide one free of charge), thermal base layers, fleece, waterproof shell, trekking trousers, warm hat and gloves, and a sleeping bag rated to -10°C for the nights at base camp.
For the lower sections, lightweight trekking clothes, a sun hat, and sunscreen are enough during the day. A headtorch is essential for the pre-dawn Poon Hill walk.
We provide a free duffel bag for your main luggage, carried by your porter.
How Much Does ABC Cost in October?
ABC is one of the most affordable major treks in Nepal. Permits are cheaper than EBC, there are no internal flights, and teahouse prices in the Annapurna region are lower than the Khumbu.
Our Annapurna Base Camp trek package includes guide, porters, meals, accommodation, permits (ACAP and TIMS), and transport to the trailhead. For detailed pricing, see our Nepal trekking cost guide.
Can You Combine ABC with Other Treks?
Yes. Common extensions include:
Poon Hill: Already included in most ABC itineraries as a one-day detour from Ghorepani. The sunrise view is worth the early wake-up.
Mardi Himal: A newer route that approaches the Annapurna range from a different angle. Can be added as a 3 to 4 day extension. Less crowded than ABC with equally dramatic views.
